"What are you thinking?" Chu Heng noticed a momentary hesitation in her bright eyes, a clear sign of deep thought. He reached out and gently tousled her long hair.


Aware of his gesture, Ye Muyu's body tensed slightly. Although she was accustomed to Chu Heng's presence and even admired his character, being physically close to a man in this way was still a first for her, considering the two lifetimes.


She had not fully accepted the fact that she already had a husband and instead regarded Chu Heng more as a companion, a close companion due to their shared experiences.


Chu Heng, sensing her subconscious reaction, felt a twinge of disappointment but it was fleeting. He quickly regained his composure and his attitude became even more determined.


He withdrew his hand as if the previous gesture had been unintentional.


"What if I told you I'm preparing for the imperial examinations through running a business?" Chu Heng suddenly raised the topic and Ye Muyu keenly sensing his emotional shift, didn't want to disturb the harmonious atmosphere between them. She made efforts to subtly change the subject and express concern for Chu Heng whenever possible.


Chu Heng, realizing her intentions, recalled the events of his past life and suddenly had an urge to inquire about Ye Muyu's thoughts.


He could now be certain that in the previous life, his feelings for the Ye family were based on a sense of responsibility rather than love. Therefore, he didn't mind Ye Muyu enduring a lonely marriage. He believed he had provided her with dignity and respect and money was never a problem.


However, this life was different.


Chu Heng lowered his gaze, concealing the surging emotions in his eyes.


"If I said yes, would you approve?" Chu Heng suddenly looked up at her, asking in a soft voice.


Ye Muyu was puzzled. "This is a good thing. Why would I oppose it?"


"The officialdom is like a battlefield. Perhaps the life you envision as a wealthy gentleman can be achieved without entering the intricate and mysterious world of officialdom." Chu Heng said gazing at her trying not to miss any subtle changes in her expression.


Ye Muyu suddenly burst into laughter and describing her laughter as radiant wouldn't be an exaggeration.


"Who said I only want to be a wealthy gentleman? If I can strive for something higher, why hesitate?" Chu Heng was slightly shocked, looking at the confident and determined gaze she cast upon him, giving him a profound sense of amazement.


After a brief pause, Chu Heng broke into a big smile revealing a newfound sense of pride. The air around him exuded an aura of arrogance which was rarely seen.


As for Ye Muyu, although she had never witnessed this side of Chu Heng, she felt that this was the real him. His usual self was just a façade, a mask he wore to navigate through life. But now, the true Chu Heng emerged, exuding an aura of pride and determination, captivating her attention.


Ye Muyu's eyes showed a hint of surprise realizing that Chu Heng once again brought her a pleasant surprise.


It seems we are truly alike.


Ye Muyu lowered her eyes and smiled.


"Let's move forward together then. As long as you're with me, there's nothing to fear on the road ahead."


Chu Heng's gaze rested on Ye Muyu. His eyes became even more resolute and then, he looked out of the window at the rustling leaves.


Half an hour later, Chu Heng returned to the academy for exams.


Ye Muyu, accompanied by Chu Ziluo, waited at the back gate for Zhang Shu.


Luchuan was also standing nearby. "Madam, I'm here to wait for the Master. I'll have Zhang Shu accompany you back later."


"Alright, I understand." Ye Muyu and Chu Ziluo climbed onto the mule cart, and Luchuan assured her "Madam, rest assured. I'll wait for the Master here."
