Chapter 375: Personally Visiting
The corridors were right next to some partially open doors.
It was evident that behind those doors were some rooms.
As they walked in, the air was filled with the strong scent of ink.
But each type of ink had a different aroma. Just by walking towards the main hall from the front entrance, Ye Muyu could smell several different scents of ink.
She had a rough idea, it seemed that different types of ink were used in different rooms. There were probably at least eight large rooms on each side, likely designated for printing.
Soon enough, the gatekeeper led Ye Muyu and Luchuan to the main hall.
"Master Xu, someone is here to print books." the gatekeeper bowed and greeted a person behind a screen next to the main hall.
Ye Muyu raised her head and saw that behind the screen was a low, long wooden table with quite a few books on it. In the middle of the books, an older man was hunched over, studying something.
Upon hearing the gatekeeper's words, the man waved his hand, "Let them in."
The gatekeeper signaled for Ye Muyu and Luchuan to enter.
Ye Muyu nodded slightly, and Luchuan, receiving her signal, took out a few copper coins from his waist and handed them to the gatekeeper.
The gatekeeper was a bit surprised but pleased with the reward. He took the coins, giving some discreet advice, "If you have any requests, just tell Master Xu directly. Don't waste too many words."
Luchuan nodded quickly to show that he understood.
Ye Muyu, not too far away overheard this piece of advice.
She understood why people in ancient times liked giving tips. It seemed she would have to get used to it as well.
Walking past the screen, Ye Muyu noticed that Master Xu hadn't lifted his head. It was only when she approached that she saw he had at least half of his hair turned white, indicating he wasn't young.
This kind of old man was probably quite persistent and disliked wasting time on idle talk.
Ye Muyu had these thoughts in a split second. She approached, offering a greeting first and then took out some documents that needed inspection, such as the red deed for the store, the official document allowing the store to operate and household registration records.
"Master Xu, I apologize for the trouble."
Ye Muyu half-knelt and sat in front of the long table, handing the documents to him.
Xu Jiao finished carving the last row of characters on his block before raising his head. He took the documents and checked to ensure everything was in order.
Directly handing her a record book, he said, "Write down the quantity, names of the books, and the type of ink and paper used on this."
Ye Muyu took the record book.
On the pages were various registration details. Each page was different, and the one she needed to write on was blank.
Not knowing the specific format, she quickly flipped through the previous pages to avoid appearing ignorant and causing trouble.
Perhaps the old man never lifted his head.
Ye Muyu successfully saw the format.
Then, she wrote down the books she needed to print on the blank page.
She needed to print quite a few books, including the Four Books and Five Classics, some miscellaneous notes brought over this time, annotation books given by Chu Heng, and his exam papers, among others.
For paper, Ye Muyu chose the most affordable and practical type, also the most common type used by the county government - white linen paper.
As for ink, she chose water-based ink.
All of these were the same as the other bookstore in the county and those in other county towns.
Before coming here, Ye Muyu had asked Chu Heng about the research on ink and paper, and he was quite knowledgeable.
Upon seeing the ink, Ye Muyu didn't immediately start writing.
She looked up at Xu Jiao and asked, "May I ask, Master Xu, what types of ink are available in the bookstore?"
