Chapter 119: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor
Chapter 119: Who Set the Fire (1)
Looking at the raging fire in front of him, Mo Dashan was completely dumbfounded, holding the firebrand in his hand.
He had intended to set fire to some wood to cause trouble for Mo Qingze, but how did it start burning when he hadn't lit it yet?
Seeing the fire growing larger with the wind, and the flames almost reaching the thatched house nearby, Mo Dashan snapped out of his daze. He rushed to the nearest house where the fire was, banging on the door loudly and shouting, "Fire! Fire! Wake up and help put out the fire!"
The temperature became increasingly scorching. If they didn't put out the fire soon, all the thatched houses in the area would be burnt down, and there might even be casualties. Mo Dashan was truly anxious.
The family that was awakened by the commotion heard "fire" and the crackling sound of the fire outside. They were so scared that they didn't even have time to dress properly. They just threw on a jacket and ran out. Seeing that the fire was about to reach their house, they shouted and hurried back inside to wake up others, then rushed to the kitchen to get buckets of water to extinguish the fire.
Seeing this, Mo Dashan grabbed the person and stopped him, saying, "The fire is too big. Water won't put it out. Quickly move the surrounding wood away to prevent the fire from spreading."
The person hadn't thought of this in his panic but, upon hearing Mo Dashan's words, quickly threw away the bucket and ran to move the wood piled under the eaves of the house.
This person's surname was Lin, named Lin Mu, a member of the Lin family, skilled in woodworking. Last year, he had processed most of the timber prepared for the Mo family.
Now, watching the piles of wood being engulfed by the fire, Lin Mu was anxious and wished he had more hands to snatch the wood out.
Soon, his parents, grandparents, and brothers came out to help, moving all the wood that hadn't been burned away to the side.
While Lin Mu's family was rescuing the wood, Mo Dashan had already gone to other villagers' houses, knocking on doors and waking up the villagers to come and help put out the fire.
Several consecutive households were also from the Lin family. Even if they didn't consider Mo's family's kindness, for the sake of their own safety, they had to rush to put out the fire. So, they all hurriedly put on their shoes and ran out to help.
Lin Yong, who lived at the far end, was also awakened by the commotion outside. Upon hearing about the fire, he immediately rushed out.
Mo Qingze, who was sleeping on the construction site, guarding the materials, was awakened by the villagers. He didn't even have time to put on his shoes and ran over barefoot, feeling weak at the sight of the raging fire.
By now, the fire had lit up half of the sky, and the intense heat could be felt from afar. Everyone urgently grabbed the surrounding wood to prevent the fire from spreading to the houses.
The Mo family had a lot of wood, most of which was prepared by the Lin family. Apart from Lin Mu's family, the nearby dozen or so households also had some wood. Among them, the largest pile that caught fire was a stack of dried wooden beams. If this fire continued, all the wooden beams would be wasted.
After nearly half an hour, all the beams and rafters around had been rescued, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to the houses. The villagers looked silently at the burning beams, sighing from time to time.
Mo Qingze sat weakly on the ground, his whole body limp and without any strength. At this moment, he was covered in sweat and black dust. Looking at the burning beams, he couldn't help but feel scared. "How did this start? Fortunately, the house didn't catch fire. Thank goodness!"
Otherwise, if someone had been burned to death, their Mo family would be in big trouble.
Hearing Mo Qingze's words, the villagers nearby were indignant. "Someone must have deliberately set the fire. This is an attempt on our lives. We must find this person and hand them over to the yamen."
"Yes, there was no thunder today, and it's the middle of the night. If it wasn't intentional, how could it have started?"
