Chapter 51: Trouble Brewing (Fifth Update)
"Insane!"
With muttered curses, Kuang Wei left from Zhao Guang's place, not only failing to get the answers he wanted but also feeling increasingly anxious.
"Ah!"
He sighed, deciding to temporarily abandon the idea of dealing with Chen Xue. Relying solely on himself was not enough, especially when the others couldn't be counted on.
After Kuang Wei left, Zhao Guang took the opportunity to inform Chen Xue of Kuang Wei's visit. While Chen Xue didn't care much, she still appreciated Zhao Guang's gesture.
After rewarding Zhao Guang with some rabbit meat, she sent him off with gratitude. Then, she started dividing the meat.
Out of the four rabbits, she gave one to Xu Tian as he had helped them significantly and without seeking anything in return. However, Xu Tian refused, feeling guilty for involving the Chen family. He feared not only for his life but also regretted not being there to help during the confrontation with Captain Sun earlier.
Despite Chen Xue's and Chen Yuan's insistence, Xu Tian eventually took the rabbit and left, feeling remorseful.
Later, with three rabbits left, one was stored in the spatial ring, while the other two were butchered. One was shared among Chen Xue's group, and the other was given to the Chen family's servants.
Although the Chen family servants never went hungry, having eaten fish days before, they had gone several days without meat. Therefore, Chen Xue and her group occasionally provided them with meat to supplement their protein intake, making their lives easier during their journey to the Southern Lands.
These servants were crucial to the Chen family's expansion into the Southern Barbarian Lands, and their loyalty was unquestionable. Chen Xue naturally didn't hesitate to support them.
As they enjoyed the braised rabbit meat, several figures suddenly barged in. They were Captain Sun's trusted subordinates, the Bailiff Qian.
Seeing them arrive with an imposing demeanor, the servants quickly informed Chen Xue and the others.
When Chen Xue's family arrived, they stood in front of them protectively.
"Sir Qian, what brings you here? I wonder what business you have," greeted Chen Yuan, although he suspected their intentions weren't good.
"I heard you caught quite a few rabbits," said Bailiff Qian, scanning the surroundings. Although he didn't see any rabbits, he caught the scent of meat and couldn't help but salivate.
Chen Yuan frowned. He knew what they were implying and was prepared to hand over the rabbits if it meant avoiding trouble. However, he feared they would demand too much.
"If you came a bit earlier, you would have seen the rabbits. Unfortunately, they're already eaten," Chen Xue coldly replied. She wouldn't easily give in to their demands. If they were willing to pay a fair price, she might consider it, but asking for one or two silver coins was insulting.
She knew it was unwise to confront these Bailiffs directly, so she decided to leverage her connections.
"Go fetch those people," she ordered, snapping her fingers. The previous promise made by Captain Sun echoed in everyone's ears.
"If news spreads that Captain Sun went back on his word, who will trust him in the future? Where will you find buyers for your herbs? Who will do business with you?"
"Are you threatening me?" Qian, Bailiff Qian, felt a surge of killing intent, even though he didn't understand how Chen Xue's words appeared in his mind. He knew it was her doing.
Chen Xue's servants immediately shielded her.
"What was that?" Bailiff Qian didn't know how to describe it. Drawing his Long sword, he demanded, "Hand over that technique you just used."
Whether it was to silence them or to acquire the mysterious technique, Bailiff Qian was determined not to let them off the hook.
With Bailiff Qian's action, his subordinates also drew their knives, surrounding the Chen family.
"What do you intend to do?" Chen Yuan's anger flared. "Do you think you can get away with killing us? Even if I die, His Majesty will send investigators, and if they find out the exiled Bailiffs acted without authorization, you won't escape punishment."
Bailiff Qian burst into laughter, glancing around. His subordinates were already driving away the nearby prisoners. He looked at Chen Yuan with contempt.
"We'll just say you were eaten by wild beasts. Besides, with your crimes of escape and assaulting Bailiffs, you're already eligible for execution."
