PWDLAW Chapter 6: Maternal Family

 Chapter 6: Maternal Family

"Hmm, I understand. You don't need to wake me up in the morning. Get some extra sleep."

The gentle words of Ye Muyu left Chu Ziluo even more uncertain, her eyes still showing a glint of fear.

Ye Muyu didn't say much. She believed that with time and interaction, her eldest daughter's fearful mindset would gradually improve. It was a process that required patience.

"Mother..." Chu Ziluo was somewhat trembling with fear.

Ye Muyu's gaze was soft and her words were gentle, but it was hard to fathom what she was thinking. She looked at Chu Jin "Chu Jin, isn't it time to practice calligraphy?"

"Mother, I don't want to practice calligraphy. I want to go to the town with Tiger and buy candied hawthorns." Chu Jin, who feared Chu Heng but was more casual with Ye Muyu, spoke out. After all, the original owner favored him greatly and his strong and domineering personality, along with Chu Ziluo's timid nature, formed the family dynamics.

Ye Muyu lifted her eyes lightly "If you don't want to listen to me, then let your father handle it."

Ye Muyu's tone wasn't forceful and after saying this, she lowered her head to attend to her own matters.

She wanted to make a pair of shoes. Apart from her son, Chu Jin, who didn't have to worry about footwear, even she herself only had three pairs of shoes.

Her eldest daughter, Chu Ziluo, had only two pairs of shoes, alternating between them. When they went to the old house, they wore the relatively better ones, and at home they wore the worn-out ones.

Ye Muyu couldn't help but sigh at the original owner's careful thoughts which seemed a bit... foolish. A simple question or a visit could easily expose the lies, making the original owner appear naive, petty, and even provoking gossip.

Thinking about it, Ye Muyu stood up.

"Mother, where are you going?"

"Mother...?"

Two voices, Chu Jin was frightened by Ye Muyu's words, while Chu Ziluo looked at her anxiously.

Ye Muyu said to Chu Jin "Go practice calligraphy and memorize your lessons your father will be back soon."

"Ziluo, come with me to get needles and thread for making shoes." Ye Muyu left the main hall, heading back to the bedroom. Although Chu Ziluo was surprised, she didn't dare to say much and hurriedly followed.

Chu Jin didn't want to write, but thinking about his father, he didn't dare to resist, especially after what his mother said. It left him shocked and scared, didn't understanding why his mother is no longer protected him. In the past, his mother would always help him with deception.

Chu Jin couldn't understand. Even though he was precocious, he was only five years old. Realizing he couldn't gain any benefits from his mother, he had to accept reality and return to his room to write and study.

Ye Muyu sat on the bed with Chu Ziluo.

Opening the half-large redwood box placed at the head of the bed, there was only half a foot of dark blue fabric left inside. If made into shoes, it wouldn't look good.

Ye Muyu fell silent, recalling that most of the fabrics in the house had been sent back to the maternal family by the original owner.

As for the original owner's maternal family, it wasn't a good one. The original owner's father was lazy and ever since Ye Yunlan married into the Chu family, the original owner's mother would occasionally come to take away some things.

Interestingly, the original owner had a good relationship with his parents and willingly sent things back to the maternal family.

Each time Chu Heng brought back fabric, pastries, tea, and more, most of it ended up in the Ye family's warehouse.

Their own house didn't have much inventory and the seemingly prosperous family of scholars was, in reality, an empty shell.

However, Ye Muyu felt that this was just a surface appearance. Chu Heng, her husband, seemed to have a gap with the original owner. Despite not falling short in providing for the original owner in terms of clothing and food, the original owner never understood her husband. She didn't know his preferences, let alone his thoughts.
