Chapter 524: Past Connections

"Past connections?" Shu Yu was truly surprised. She was puzzled as she asked, "We had a connection in the past?"

Madam Hou fell silent for a moment and then forced a bitter smile. "You might not remember, after all, you were still very young back then."

"Tell me," Shu Yu urged.

"When you were around three years old, you were often locked in a small dark room by the Shu family. I had just entered the household at that time, and I was pregnant with the Sixth Miss. I admit that I'm not a good person, but as someone who was about to become a mother, I couldn't bear to see such a young child being mistreated. So, whenever I had the chance, I secretly sent you some food."

Madam Hou had a background in the entertainment industry. She had been bought into a brothel at a young age, serving the most popular courtesan at the time. As she grew older and her appearance became more attractive, the madam saw her potential and planned to sell her virginity at a high price.

It was that courtesan who protected her, but unfortunately, she couldn't protect her forever. So she advised her to seduce a soft-hearted wealthy man from a prestigious family.

At that time, Madam Hou was just a lowly maid, but if she could capture the heart of such a man, there was a high possibility of becoming one of his concubines.

Although the private lives of wealthy families were not peaceful, they were still better than being a prostitute who served countless men.

Madam Hou carefully chose and eventually targeted the Second Master of the Shu family.

The Shu family's patriarch was a high-ranking official, and the madam of the brothel didn't dare to offend him. The Second Master, on the other hand, was known for being easily swayed, so it wasn't difficult for Madam Hou to manipulate him.

As expected, the Second Master redeemed her and settled her in a courtyard in the city. Later, when she became pregnant, she was brought into the Shu family and became Madam Hou.

But she couldn't relax at all. Wealthy households had many secrets, and especially in the unfamiliar Shu family, she had no confidants around her.

However, she couldn't stay confined in her courtyard all the time. She needed to quickly gather information about the Shu family.

So whenever nobody was paying attention, Madam Hou would occasionally leave the courtyard to take a walk and look around. If anyone asked, she would say she was going for a stroll. After all, the doctor had advised her to move around more as it would be beneficial for her delivery. Otherwise, she might face difficulties during childbirth.

It was during one of those walks that she happened to see Shu Yu. At that time, little Shu Yu was desperately hungry and, for some reason, had quietly escaped from Aunt Xue's courtyard.

Madam Hou had never seen this child before. She didn't look like a servant, and she definitely didn't resemble a young miss.

Little Shu Yu was so hungry and disoriented that she almost bumped into Madam Hou.

Madam Hou quickly avoided her and even thought that this child might have been sent by the Second Madam to deliberately cause her to miscarry.

So Madam Hou turned around and left, but as she was leaving, she saw a few maidservants with malicious expressions coming from the other side. They didn't notice her and directly picked up the frail little Shu Yu, who was barely breathing, and walked away.

As they walked, they scolded her. It was from their conversation that Madam Hou learned

that the little girl was actually the Third Miss of the Shu family, the daughter of the Shu patriarch.

She found it unbelievable that the third young miss of a high-ranking official's family could live in worse conditions than a servant. Moreover, the child was so young, appearing to be only two or three years old, yet these people treated her as if she were nothing.

After returning, that scene kept flashing in Madam Hou's mind.

Later, she asked the servants from the Shu family who served her, and that's how she learned about the situation of the Third Miss in the household.

Originally, Madam Hou had no intention of meddling. She was still trying to find ways to protect herself, and she didn't have the energy to worry about others.
