PWDLAW Chapter 338: Sichuan Pepper

 Chapter 338: Sichuan Pepper

Ye Muyu suddenly realized, no wonder it was like this. Now it made sense.

"Madam, I'll take Miss and Young Master to pick peaches." Hu Shi said as she noticed the two children getting restless.

Ye Muyu nodded and reminded Chu Ziluo and Chu Jin to be careful. Falling under the peach tree would surely be painful.

"Muyu, try to eat this. These peaches have been pitted and they're both crispy and sweet." Qian said.

Ye Muyu thanked her and accepted the peach. Observing it, she saw that the peach had been taken care of well. Its size could reach half of her palm, a common hairy peach variety. The skin had some black spots but after wiping away the ash, she could see the pinkish parts.

While it didn't look that good, Ye Muyu could smell the sweet fragrance of the peach.

She didn't eat the peach immediately, deciding to wash and peel it at home to avoid the peach fuzz from getting on her body and causing itchiness.

Ye Muyu didn't join in the peach-picking fun. Instead, she walked around the outskirts.

Her eyes focused when she saw the Sichuan pepper tree.

Reaching out, she picked an unripe green Sichuan pepper and held it in her hand.

Sichuan pepper trees were more commonly found in Sichuan and some parts of Jiangnan but they weren't very common.

"Aunt Wu, is this a Sichuan pepper tree?" Ye Muyu asked in surprise.

"You mean this?" Qian happened to be picking peaches from a nearby tree. She looked up, took a glance and recognized it immediately. "You mean this, right? Yes, it's a Sichuan pepper tree."

"Speaking of which, this Sichuan pepper is also a medicinal herb. A few years ago, Xing met a traveling merchant in the county who claimed that the things he carried could cure illnesses. He also said that if these trees grew big, their good branches could be used as good wood."

"You know, the old ladies from those wealthy families in the county all use canes and these things require branches that aren't too thick. Sichuan pepper tree branches are just right."

"I heard that the wood used by the old ladies in the capital is even better but Sichuan pepper wood is still popular in the county."

"But, these Sichuan pepper trees usually grow in Sichuan. We rarely see them here, so it's probably not very suitable."

"After Xing bought it back, he realized this. But since he spent more than ten coppers on this sapling, he didn't want to give up and unexpectedly he managed to keep it alive." Qian said, laughing. Clearly, she was satisfied with her son's actions.

At least it wasn't a waste. In the countryside, as long as someone was diligent, people liked them.

Ye Muyu thought, no wonder it's like this. It's not surprising that it could survive, considering that the climate here was not too different from Sichuan. However, its appearance was probably not as good as those in Sichuan.

"Besides, Aunt Wu, how have you been dealing with these Sichuan peppers?" Ye Muyu asked.

"We sell them as medicinal herbs. As for the wood, we can't just cut it down once it has finally grown. However, in recent years three or four nearby trees have also grown. You can see the smaller one next to it, which is producing fruit for the second year. The one next to it will probably bear fruit next year." Qian explained.

"Since it was bought from a traveling merchant, did the merchant mention whether it could be used for food?" Ye Muyu asked.

"It seems like he did, but I tried it and it's very numbing in the mouth. It's simply inedible." Qian said with a sigh. "It truly deserves to be a medicinal herb, the taste is not great."

"Aunt Wu, you're wrong this time. Sichuan pepper is used as a seasoning in Sichuan, similar to chili. Unfortunately, in our area it's not well known and even the pharmacies don't carry it much." Ye Muyu said.
