"Mother, what should I do?" Chu Jin scratched his head in distress. He wasn't the type to overthink things, so when he heard Chu Heng's words, he believed that his mother could provide him with an answer and he didn't want to trouble himself unnecessarily.
Ye Muyu actually wanted to hear his genuine thoughts to ensure that he wasn't accustomed to delicious food and would disdain anything less.
With a gentle smile, she said, "Xiao Jin, Mother was just testing you. I don't want you to waste food, understand?"
"Mother will strive to be a reasonable person, so you won't be put in a difficult position."
Chu Jin understood now but was still somewhat puzzled.
"Mother, you intentionally said that just now? Fortunately, I never intended to waste food. Actually they all taste good. How could I throw them away?" He was straightforward, showing no signs of reluctance.
As for the part he didn't understand, he wasn't someone to keep questions to himself. So, he asked, "Mother, if you're so good, why do you need to learn to be reasonable?"
"So, what exactly is this reasoning?"
Ye Muyu shook her head with a smile "There's a lot to learn about this. Ask your father later."
"Okay." Chu Jin took a big bite of the zongzi, carefully chewing before swallowing. He then said, "Anyway, I just like Mother."
"If you want to ask something next time, just ask me directly. No need for testing."
Sincerely shaking his head, he added, "Testing is not good. I don't like it when others doubt my sincerity."
Hearing these words, Ye Muyu looked at the child in front of her, round-faced, growing more handsome and couldn't help but admit that he had indeed matured. He also reminded her that with family, there was no need to tactfully test each other. Family should be the most trustworthy existence and she hadn't fully realized this until now.
"Alright." There was no need for further words. Ye Muyu reflected on herself, and the atmosphere within the family became even better.
Seeing that both children had eaten two large zongzi each, Chu Heng took the zongzi from their hands.
"You've eaten enough, too many zongzi at once are not good."
"If you're hungry later, just drink some porridge and eat some pickles."
Chu Heng, as the head of the family naturally had the final say. Chu Ziluo and Chu Jin dared not object. Besides, two zongzi each was already a lot for them, considering their young age.
After breakfast, with Hu Shi helping to clean the dishes, Ye Muyu took a moment to relax. She was troubled about how to finish eating over a hundred zongzi in their house. If kept for too long, they might spoil.
Even if stored in a sealed jar and placed in the well, it would only last for two or three days at most.
Other families in the village didn't have such concerns. Firstly, most of the elders were present and there was no separation between families. Chu Heng's unique situation arose because of his success in the imperial examination. Secondly, Chu Heng knew many people and was willing to make friends. During festivals, they received many gifts and also gave out a fair number.
However, their family had fewer members.
No matter how much they eat, it was impossible to finish them all.
"Wife, how about sending some to the old house? The zongzi sent by the Xu family in the county, those from scholars returning home and those from other scholars might have different flavors. The old house won't mind."
"Besides, there are still the gifts from your family. It would be a pity to waste them."
With more than a hundred zongzi, even if the family consumed thirty of them in two days, there would still be leftovers.
"But apart from that, there's still your family. It's a shame to waste them."
"Wife, how about selecting the zongzi sent by the Xu family in the county, those from scholars returning home and those from other scholars?"
