Chapter 312: Double-Skin Milk
Zhang Shu muttered a few words and grabbed a basket before heading out.
In the study.
Ye Muyu took a miscellaneous record depicting the scenery of Jiangnan from a high shelf and handed it to Chu Ziluo.
The Great Chu region was vast, taking at least seven to eight days to travel from Nanchang County to the provincial capital. The distance to the capital was even longer, requiring two months of travel. Many of these miscellaneous records were written by monks, and since Buddhism was highly regarded in Great Chu, there were temples everywhere. The famous Fuguang Temple outside the capital was the most renowned in the entire region, and many of the miscellaneous records bought by Chu Heng were written by monks from this temple.
Ye Muyu believed that traveling broadened one's knowledge, but without money, one might end up spending their entire life in a temple without ever leaving. It had been the same throughout history.
Hu Shi, well versed in the art of milking, had the cows waiting for her.
"Take your time reading. I'll go boil the milk." Ye Muyu said, placing the book on the desk.
She left Nenya to accompany Chu Ziluo while reading. Ye Muyu didn't want to disturb the child and walked out of the study into the kitchen.
Hu Shi was waiting for Ye Muyu with a bucket filled with freshly squeezed milk.
"Help me light the fire." Ye Muyu instructed softly. She planned to make double-skin milk and wanted to send some to Chu Heng.
Hu Shi controlled the fire perfectly. Ye Muyu poured the milk into a pot and heated it. While it was still hot, she transferred it to a bowl, waiting for a layer of milk skin to form on the surface.
During this time, Ye Muyu took soaked red beans from a jar and started cooking them.
By the time the milk skin had solidified, Ye Muyu pierced it with a chopstick and slowly poured the milk back into an empty bowl, leaving a bit of milk under the milk skin.
"Hu Shi, get me four eggs." Ye Muyu said.
Hu Shi quickly retrieved the eggs from the cupboard.
Ye Muyu separated the egg whites from the yolks, leaving the yolks for later use. She added the appropriate amount of sugar to the egg whites, stirred it well, and then poured it into the milk, continuing to stir.
Gradually, a layer of bubbles formed.
"Madam, do you need a strainer?" Hu Shi, having seen Ye Muyu cook many times, could now anticipate her needs. At this point, she no longer required Ye Muyu's guidance.
"Yes." Ye Muyu nodded and took the sieve handed over by Hu Shi. She removed the surface foam and poured it back into the original milk skin bowl along the rim.
The milk skin slowly floated up.
Without plastic wrap, Ye Muyu directly inverted another bowl onto the milk skin. The inverted bowl needed to be preheated to prevent steam from forming later.
She put it in the pot to steam for ten minutes.
"Bang, bang, bang."
As soon as Ye Muyu put the milk skin into the pot to steam, she heard a noise from the courtyard.
Hu Shi had already hurried to open the door.
Ye Muyu poured hot water to wash her hands and scooped out the cooked red beans into a bowl.
In no time, Hu Shi returned.
"Madam, the Wang family is here for a visit." Hu Shi said, "I've already welcomed them into the main hall."
"Alright, I know. Brew some tea and bring it in." Ye Muyu instructed.
