Chapter 277: Filial Piety and Reasoning
"Alright go to the study and check the homework of the two children. It's getting late and you should go to bed early." Ye Muyu got up and pushed Chu Heng gently.
Following her lead, Chu Heng left the house and entered the study.
Ye Muyu first went into the children's room, changing their bedsheets and refreshing the room. She placed the used bedding in a wooden basin in the courtyard, planning to clean them the next day.
After finishing with the children, she turned her attention to her own room.
The next morning, Luchuan left home early.
When Ye Muyu woke up, Hu Shi had already prepared breakfast as usual.
The family gathered in the main hall to have a simple breakfast. They had zongzi, gifts received from relatives the previous day. Each family had different flavors and most of them were large zongzi, as the villagers preferred making them that way. However, Ye Muyu's zongzi were an exception, they were small but had various fillings, including sesame, peanuts, whole red dates, red sugar, ice sugar, and even a small amount of meat.
Ye Muru didn't eat much in the morning. She took a bite of the meat-filled zongzi and smiled "Although there's not much meat, it tastes unexpectedly good. Did you add lard?"
"I don't know who made this?"
Chu Jin quickly raised his hand, saying, "Mother, I know. This is made by Aunt Five. A few days ago, Aunt Five asked you at the door what filling you were using this year, remember?"
Prompted by her child's reminder, Ye Muyu recalled the incident.
Before the Dragon Boat Festival, Qian Shi had been helping with various tasks, such as delivering meals and water next door. Chu Xing's house was already halfway renovated and it would probably be finished in another month.
From time to time, Qian Shi would come over for a chat, but she usually stayed at the entrance without entering, chatting casually without hindering their work.
"Aunt Five has good skills." Ye Muru praised.
Chu Ziluo raised her head and said, "Mother, I still like the ones you make the most."
"I like the ones Mother makes and others' don't taste as good." Although Chu Jin said this, he didn't eat the zongzi slowly.
Ye Muyu looked at him and raised an eyebrow, "Not tasty? Yet you're eating it so eagerly?"
"Mother, we shouldn't waste food or father will scold me." Although the last sentence was spoken quietly, he had the courage to say it in front of Chu Heng. It seemed that spending time with his father had made him less awkward, reducing the unfamiliarity between them.
Ye Muyu continued in a seemingly indifferent tone "If I tell you not to eat because I don't like it, what would you do?"
Chu Jin looked at her with confusion, hesitated for a while and finally looked at Chu Heng "Father, the book says: when Meng Yizi asked about filial piety, Confucius said, 'Do not disobey.' It means not to violate the wishes of parents to be filial. However, there is also a popular saying: 'Save a bite when full, get a peck when hungry.'"
"I'm confused. What should I do now?"
Ye Muyu didn't expect that her intentionally probing words would lead her son to discuss the dilemma between filial piety and reason. She couldn't help but sigh, during this period, this child had indeed been diligent in his studies.
In the past, he would be considered good if he could memorize the content of the books. He never quoted classic texts or applied them in real life.
Chu Heng nodded approvingly, "You're right. These two principles are inherently contradictory."
"But, for this answer, you should ask your mother about filial piety because it primarily concerns her. As for reasoning, it's about you."
Chu Jin looked at Ye Muyu after hearing this.
