Chapter 325: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor
Chapter 325: A Well-Intentioned Reminder (6)
Mo Yan looked at Li Zhong with admiration, feeling as if she had found a treasure. She knew nothing of these intricate details and even if she tried to investigate, she would need the right connections to uncover any information.
Li Zhong, sensing her gaze, chuckled, "Yan'er, this is nothing special. Spend a few more years in the business world and you will understand."
Had it not been for his earlier years managing business for his former employer and gaining some insight into the Xue family, he wouldn’t have thought of these things.
"Grandpa Li is too modest. Not everyone has such keen insight!" Mo Yan praised him, then furrowed her brow. "So, our shop has become the Xue family’s opportunity?"
"Exactly!" Li Zhong nodded. "The grain we sell is of much higher quality than what others offer. The taste and texture far surpass other grains. Naturally, the Xue family wouldn’t miss this chance to regain the nobles' trust."
His expression turned complicated as he looked at Mo Yan. He finally couldn’t help but warn her, "Yan'er, I don't know where you get the grain sold in our shop, but now that someone has taken notice, you need to be careful."
When he first stayed at the Mo family’s house, he found their meals inexplicably delicious but didn’t think much of it. It wasn’t until the rice shop opened that he realized something was amiss. Such high-quality grain couldn’t be sourced unnoticed and sold publicly. He hadn’t intended to bring it up, but now that the Xue family was involved, he had to warn her. As for the origin of the grain, he was indeed curious, but he knew better than to pry into matters that didn’t concern him.
"Grandpa Li..." Mo Yan’s heart shook. She didn’t dare meet his eyes, fearing they would reveal her panic.
Forcing herself to calm down, she carefully reviewed where things might have gone wrong, but couldn’t pinpoint any specific issues. Every time she entered the space, she made sure no one noticed, and everything taken out had a plausible source. There shouldn’t have been any leaks.
"Yan'er, don’t worry!" Li Zhong, having lived a long life, could easily see through Mo Yan’s thoughts. He looked at her lovingly and reassured her in a gentle voice, "I brought this up just to remind you. I don’t know what your secret is, and I won’t pry. Everyone has secrets, and if you choose not to share, I won’t ask."
Li Zhong’s words gradually eased Mo Yan’s tension, and she finally realized where the issue lay. The space had upgraded to level four, infusing the grains with even more spiritual energy. This made a noticeable difference in taste and texture compared to ordinary grains.
Since she had been eating grain from the space all along, she hadn’t noticed the change. In her eagerness to sell the grain before it was harvested from the space, she hadn’t considered that people unfamiliar with it would immediately detect the difference. No wonder the Xue family had taken notice!
Thankfully, no one would ever think to associate it with the space. They might suspect her of using some sort of sorcery, which could be equally dangerous.
After a moment of silence, she said, "Grandpa Li, I can’t tell you the source of the grain right now. Next year, we’ll be able to grow this kind of grain ourselves. Once it’s widely available, no one will keep a close watch on us. For now, the priority is to get the shop through this crisis."
Relieved that the young girl didn’t hold any resentment over the matter, Li Zhong was pleased. He carefully analyzed the current situation and provided several suggestions.
The two of them discussed for a long time and finally devised a plan to tackle the problem...
