Chapter 144: The Princess - Rebirth of the Noble Daughter

 Chapter 144: The Princess

The majority of the censors in the Censorate were Elder Xu's prized students. When the engagement issue broke out, they were the first to step forward, criticizing the Wei and Liang families harshly. Now that they had leverage again, Uncle Liang would likely be skinned alive by them, not to mention the disruption to his career. It might also jeopardize the already tumultuous marriage between her and Liang Gongzi. With a hardened heart, Wei Lanxuan turned to Liang Luo and said, "Apologize!"

Liang Luo was terrified. Xu Mingyue and Elder Xu were similar—they would rather break than bend. The Xu family didn’t care whether they held official positions or not, but the Wei family did. If her father were impeached and lost his position, her chances with the Ninth Prince would be even slimmer.

Biting her lip, Liang Luo was about to speak when Xu Mingyue walked away.

Apologize? No need.

Xu Mingyue intended for Liang Luo to pay for her actions, to prevent her from constantly causing trouble.

As Xu Mingyue walked away, Liang Luo panicked, losing her earlier arrogance. She clutched Wei Lanxuan’s hand and cried, "Sister-in-law, what should we do?"

The red mark on her cheek still hurt, but she couldn't care about it now.

Wei Lanxuan initially thought Liang Luo was just a little overbearing, but now she realized Liang Luo was hopeless, not knowing her own limitations and charging ahead foolishly. With such a sister-in-law, who knew how many messes she would have to clean up in the future?

Ahead, Xu Mingyue and her group walked quickly to Changchun Tower, where they ran into Yin Canwen. Seeing Feng Jinyao and the others, Yin Canwen's eyes lit up and he approached to greet them, noticing their unhappy expressions. He was about to ask when he saw Wei Lanxuan dragging Liang Luo, followed by Liang Gongzi and the Wen Siblings, rushing over.

They all looked hurried and sullen, and Liang Luo seemed to have a mark on her face.

Standing aside, Yin Canwen didn’t speak first. Wei Lanxuan rushed over to apologize again for Liang Luo.

"Miss Xu, Liang Meimei really acted impulsively. Why must you escalate the matter? It doesn’t benefit the Xu family."

Xu Mingyue didn’t say much, just looked at Wei Lanxuan coldly. For the first time, she felt pity for her. Once so proud, Wei Lanxuan now had to humble herself for Liang Luo. Fortunately, it wasn't Xu Mingyue who married into the Liang family, or she would be the one dragging Liang Luo around today, begging for help.

Feeling a bit sorry for Wei Lanxuan, she thought.

"Oh? What a coincidence, why are you all standing here instead of going inside?"

Hearing the voice, they turned around to see Princess Changlin in disguise, accompanied by a dozen skilled guards. No one knew why she was here; she was supposed to be at Baiyue Pavilion celebrating with the royal family.

Feng Jinyao’s legs went weak at the sight of Princess Changlin. When the princess glanced at her brother, Feng Jinyao was startled, fearing a repeat of past events. She quickly tugged at Feng Jinlin’s sleeve. Having been reminded several times, Feng Jinlin was nervous facing the princess, feeling a chill as her gaze passed over him.

Fortunately, he was not dressed as ostentatiously as before, but his striking face was hard to conceal.

Xiao Mu Qian had a poor impression of Princess Changlin. Seeing her gaze lingering on Feng Jinlin, he felt displeased. Must every good man in Dongdu fall victim to her?

He stepped forward to block her view of Feng Jinlin and bowed. "Greetings, Aunt Changlin."

Princess Changlin, interrupted, was somewhat displeased, especially since it was Xiao Mu Qian. Though it was their first meeting, their enmity was deep-rooted. Seeing Xiao Mu Qian defending the man behind him, she lost much of her interest. Handsome consorts were plentiful in her palace; this one was just a novelty.

With his submissive demeanor, he was less appealing than those in her palace’s Qin Fangyuan. She immediately lost interest.

"Hmm, no need for formalities outside. Were you heading to Changchun Tower?"

Xiao Mu Qian shook his head. He had planned to stay longer, but now, surrounded by disliked people, he didn’t want to linger. "We’re here to pick up Feng family relatives. It’s time to take the ladies home."

She had only met Bai Siruo among the ladies from the Feng, Xu, and Bai families. Her initial impression of Bai Siruo was good, but now, following the wrong crowd, she didn’t care for her anymore.

Smiling slightly, she said, "In that case, I won’t hold you. Miss Wei, do you have time to join me?"

Princess Changlin was a prominent figure, close to the emperor, someone they rarely had a chance to meet. Feeling she had a backer, Liang Luo immediately curtsied and said to the princess.

"Princess, it would be an honor to accompany you. Your presence makes Changchun Tower shine even brighter."

"And you are?" Princess Changlin asked, curious.

"I’m Liang Luo, daughter of the Chief Justice. This is my brother, who is soon to marry Miss Wei."

Liang Luo quickly introduced them.

Wen Xinglu had never met Princess Changlin but had heard rumors about her. Seeing her now, she didn’t seem as demonic as the rumors suggested but rather noble and approachable, making people want to draw closer. Given her status, she might help him meet those he wished to connect with, so he warmly introduced himself.

"Commoner greets the princess."

"And you are?"

"I’m Wen Xinglu. My uncle is Assistant Minister of Personnel Wen Jingsong, and this is his son."

He was proactive. Wen Mengsheng, feeling overshadowed, was displeased but remained composed, still exuding a gentle aura. "Greetings, princess. I’m Wen Mengsheng."

"Mengsheng? That’s a lovely name. So you’re cousins? You do look somewhat alike."

As they chatted outside Changchun Tower, Feng Jinxu helped Madam Wen down the stairs and witnessed the scene.

Not wanting to get entangled, Feng Jinyao whispered to her brother, "Stay hidden and as low-key as possible. Let’s leave quickly."

"Okay."
