Chapter 166: Little Sisters, Hand in Hand

After holding it in for so long, He Shuruan finally managed to utter, her face flushed a deep red, “Suisui is pretty.”

She had intended to say that Suisui was beautiful too, but somehow the sentence was cut short, leaving her feeling frustrated and at a loss.

Suisui, flattered by the compliment, couldn't help but beam with pride. Being just a child, she didn’t quite know how to express her happiness. Initially, she wanted to imitate her sister Qiao Qiao, puffing out her little belly and lifting her chin high. But then, remembering that she was still holding hands with Shuruan , she abandoned that idea and thought of other ways to show her joy.

Smiling? That should be the right way to express happiness, right? Lele had said so too.

With that thought, Suisui’s eyes narrowed into slits as she flashed a silly grin, revealing her little white teeth, and giggled, “Hehe.”

When Suisui laughed, she looked adorably silly, like a playful raccoon enjoying a good joke, curled up with her little belly exposed, swaying her limbs in delight, ready to be played with.

He Shuruan couldn’t tell if her comparison was accurate, but she felt that, if anything, Suisui was even cuter than a raccoon!

He Shuruan had always wanted to keep a raccoon. Unfortunately, her poor health meant that spending too much time with one made her breathless. Because of this, their household barely kept any furry pets, and even the raccoon her grandmother had raised for years had been entrusted to someone else for care. Her grandmother had even shed a few quiet tears over it.

Now, seeing the adorable Suisui right in front of her, He Shuruan found that her regret over not having a raccoon diminished significantly. Not to mention, Suisui was even cuter and, more importantly, she liked her and could talk!

With those thoughts in mind, He Shuruan squeezed Suisui’s hand tightly, being careful not to hurt her.

The two girls stood there in silence, and neither Qi Wangfei nor Madam He rushed them, just smiling and watching them. Eventually, it was He Shuruan who, feeling shy under their gaze, gently shook Suisui’s hand and suggested, “Sister, let’s go drink something.”

It didn’t seem polite to keep the adults waiting. For that reason, she held back her shyness and mustered the courage to express herself.

Madam He, observing this, felt a mix of sweetness and heartache. She turned her back, quietly wiping her tears to avoid letting the children see, then quickly turned back around.

Qi Wangfei understood the sentiment but chose not to mention it. However, her gaze on Suisui grew increasingly affectionate and appreciative.

She recalled when Suisui first arrived at their estate, a timid little thing who hid behind Xiao Liu, afraid to look around. Now, the child had made such progress, knowing to take the initiative to hold hands with her beloved sister.

Qi Wangfei thought this was wonderful. She had never expected Suisui to become a person who could charm everyone, especially since she herself had never been able to do that. She simply hoped the child would find a close friend during her lifetime and, later on, a good husband. She wasn’t asking for riches or great power, just a peaceful and fulfilling life.

Soon, the two children held hands and went to enjoy today’s tea.

Qi Wangfei and Madam He settled down, chatting about everyday life while keeping an eye on the kids.

Before long, Haitang returned with the news. Standing at the door, she hesitated for a moment before entering.

Seeing Haitang, Qi Wangfei nodded in acknowledgment, prompting her to enter and softly report, “It’s the Fifth Young Master of the Tang family. He threw a little snake at the Fourth Young Lady, which caused all the screaming. The monks are currently helping to catch the snake.”

Qi Wangfei: …

Madam He: …

Hearing this, although Qi Wangfei was surprised and speechless, she felt it wasn’t too serious. As long as they didn’t provoke her side, how they managed their own affairs was their problem.

Moreover, since she was only visiting for a few days with Suisui, they didn’t have a fixed itinerary. If things got out of hand, they could leave at night.

In contrast, Madam He found herself in quite a dilemma. She had heard that the Fifth Young Master of the Tang family was quite a mischievous child. Since she had little interaction with them, she didn’t know what to expect.

Now that she had witnessed this incident, she felt both speechless and troubled. The thought of spending time in this same guesthouse, where such things could happen frequently, made her want to withdraw.

She had brought her child here to pray for blessings, hoping that Suisui could soak in some divine light and recuperate, not to seek out excitement!

Yet the Tang family was powerful, and she couldn’t speak against them.

Madam He wore an emotional expression but didn’t want Qi Wangfei to misunderstand. She could only force a smile, saying, “I apologize for making Qi Wangfei witness such a farce; I really…”

She wanted to explain but found no way to do so.

Qi Wangfei understood her feelings. Seeing Madam He nearly on the verge of tears, she quickly comforted her, “It’s alright. The Buddha knows of your sincerity every year and won’t hold any occasional inconveniences against you.”

The implication was that if she felt uncomfortable, it would be alright to return home early. They could always come back another time.

Madam He nodded, feeling helpless but recognizing the truth in those words.

He Shuruan noticed her mother’s forced smile and felt saddened. She thought it was all because of her poor health.

The doctors had already warned that she might not live long. Although she was still young, she understood that “not living long” meant she might not have much time left.

Her health worsened every spring, making breathing difficult, and sometimes she even fainted from it. That was why her mother brought her to Lanrou Temple every spring, hoping for a little divine blessing.

In addition, they had brought a female doctor along, just in case something happened again.

He Shuruan knew her mother loved her and that the whole family cared for her. However, she didn’t want to be a burden to them. She didn’t want to see them anxiously counting the days each spring, waiting for the season to pass before they could finally breathe easy, grateful for another year of her life.

Yet, she also didn’t want to let go of life.

She thought her mother was so kind, and her family was so loving. The world was so beautiful; she…

Didn’t want to leave.

With those thoughts swirling in her mind, the little girl couldn’t help but grip Suisui’s hand tightly, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Suisui had wanted to tell her, “The five-spice cake today smells really good,” but before she could say anything, she saw her sister crying and immediately panicked!
