Chapter 391: Reaping What You Sow (2)
As to why they ventured into the mountains in the middle of the night, Mo Yan surmised that, combining Yang Bao’s request earlier that day and Wang Dali's greed, these people must have tried to follow Xiao Hua to get some easy gains. Instead, they ended up like this, mauled by a tiger.
Frustrated at not getting any benefits and having to spend a fortune on medical treatment, they decided to falsely accuse Xiao Hua, causing trouble at her home to force her to take the blame. Hmph, they wish!
In a moment, Mo Yan had figured out most of their actions and calculations. Since they hadn’t mentioned Da Bai and Mao Tuan, it seemed they didn’t know these two were also hers. This made it easier to clear Xiao Hua's name!
"You, you’re lying!" Wang Dali suddenly jumped up from his chair, glaring at Mo Yan in a fit of rage, his eyes bulging. "I’m telling you, whether you admit it or not, you must pay us compensation tonight, or I’ll stay here and not leave!"
"Lying?" Mo Yan looked at him with a smile devoid of warmth. "How about I go to the yamen right now and bring an examiner to inspect your wounds to see if they were caused by a dog or a tiger?"
Her words silenced the entire hall. The dozen villagers stared at Mo Yan in shock, clearly not expecting her to guess what injured them.
"You—you wouldn’t dare!" Wang Dali shouted loudly, trying to mask his inner panic and force Mo Yan to admit that Xiao Hua had injured them.
Mo Yan's smile faded as she looked at Wang Dali with contempt. "You barged into my house in the middle of the night, falsely accusing my dog of injuring you, and demanded compensation. Why wouldn’t I dare to call an examiner to clear my name?"
"You, you..." Wang Dali stammered, his finger trembling as he pointed at Mo Yan, unable to refute her. He realized that their scheme wouldn’t work against the Mo family. The wounds on their bodies were undeniable evidence, and no amount of trickery could pin the blame on the Mo family.
Mo Yan didn't bother looking at him again. She scanned the room and saw the other villagers hanging their heads, unable to say a word. Coldly, she said, "Since you’re injured and we’re from the same village, I won’t make things difficult for you tonight. You can leave now!"
The villagers' eyes brightened, thinking Mo Yan wouldn’t pursue the matter. They quickly said, "Yan girl, you’re a good person. Tonight’s matter was just a misunderstanding. We’ll leave now, we’ll leave now!"
With their flattering words, they hurriedly carried the resentful Wang Dali out of the Mo house, fearing that if they delayed, Mo Yan might change her mind. They overlooked her emphasis on "tonight."
Once the villagers left in a hurry, Li Xiu entered with an admiring gleam in her eyes. "Yan’er, you were... I don’t even know how to say it! Those people barged in so aggressively, and I didn’t know what to do. But with just a few words, you scared them away. That was amazing!"
Feeling pressured by her elder's admiration, Mo Yan said helplessly, "Aunt Li, their scheme was full of holes. Even if I couldn’t refute them today, I just exploited their weak points and fought back. It’s nothing special."
Li Xiu knew Mo Yan was being modest. Otherwise, why hadn’t she thought of that? Seeing that Mo Yan didn’t want to discuss it further, she asked, "What about those people? Are you just going to let them go?"
Mo Yan sneered. "I’m not so kind-hearted as to tolerate their repeated schemes. This matter isn’t severe enough for the yamen to intervene. It's too late now, but first thing in the morning, I'll go see the village head and see how he’ll handle it!"
