Chapter 388: Greed Provokes Trouble, Xiao Hua Injures Someone (Part 4)
...
After feeding the peach to Mao Mao, Mo Yan warmed her hands and spread out a blank sheet of paper, ready to reply with her quill. This was already the eighth letter she had written since the first one. Initially, her responses were brief, but unconsciously, she had begun writing more and more, now filling up an entire sheet of paper.
Once the letter was folded and stuffed into the envelope, Mo Yan hesitated for a moment. From her spatial storage, she retrieved a pair of gloves she had personally made earlier. Feeling the soft warmth of the gloves, she picked up a small cloth bundle nearby and was about to tie it onto Mao Mao's back when she hesitated again.
In this era, while restrictions on women weren't as strict as in the Song Dynasty of her previous life, giving gifts to men of a different surname wasn't quite proper. She felt it might be misunderstood. If she sent Mao Mao off so boldly with this, how would that person view her?
Seeing Mo Yan's hesitation, Mao Mao became anxious, pacing back and forth on the table. It occasionally lightly pecked at her fingers, urging her to hurry and tie the bundle onto its back.
If its master received this woman's gift, he would surely be very pleased. If he was happy, then Mao Mao would have done something right. Even if it made a mistake in the future, its master would take its merits into account and not punish it as severely as before.
Mo Yan didn't understand this little clever spirit's intentions. Seeing its paw continually pawing at the small cloth bundle, she gritted her teeth and tied it onto its back. In her heart, she silently warned herself that it was so cold over there. If his hands froze and affected her mood, and his mood affected decision-making in battles, there could be a loss.
She had sent a pair of gloves only for the suffering people at the border, and there were no other intentions. If that person dared to look down on her because of this, it would only prove that this person's thinking was narrow, and she had been blind to see the wrong person.
Carrying something for the first time, Mao Mao felt a little uncomfortable. It twisted its body, stretched its wings, and shook them a bit. Once it was sure the load wouldn't affect its flight, it called out to Mo Yan, then flew to the courtyard wall, gathering strength before flying northward with all its might.
Watching Maomao's figure grow smaller and smaller, eventually becoming a black dot disappearing in the snowy sky, Mo Yan finally turned back to her study. She retrieved the letters from her drawer and read through them again, feeling an inexplicable sense of melancholy.
"Xin'er, are you hungry? These buns might be cold by now. I'll cook lunch right away, just wait a bit longer."
As noon approached, Mo Yan went to the kitchen to prepare lunch and saw Xin'er taking the leftover buns from the morning out of the pot. She quickly stopped her. It was too cold, and even though there was some residual warmth in the pot, the buns would have cooled down by now and could cause stomach discomfort if eaten.
"Sister..."
Startled, Xin'er trembled, and the bun she was holding fell back into the pot. She stood nervously by the stove, looking uneasy.
Seeing her so anxious, Mo Yan felt puzzled, "I'm not stopping you from eating, why are you so scared?"
Xin'er glanced at her sister timidly, twisting her fingers in apprehension, "Sister, I'm not hungry and I didn't want to eat the buns. It's just... just..."
Mo Yan found this amusing and asked, "Just what? As long as you're not wasting the buns by throwing them away, I won't scold you."
Relieved, Xin'er hesitated a bit before coming closer to her sister and awkwardly said, "I recently made a new good friend. She's very nice, sensible, and considerate. But her stepmother is very cruel, giving her only a small bowl of thin porridge each day while making her do all the household chores. She always looks like she's about to faint, so I wanted to give her some buns to fill her stomach!"
After hearing this, Mo Yan patted her head and smiled, "Xin'er, you're a kind and good child. I'm very pleased. It's fine to give her those buns! By the way, what's your friend's name? Invite her to our home to play sometime if you can."
