Chapter 376: A Fight Breaks Out
Chapter 376: A Fight Breaks Out
Tang Yu was delighted when her husband finally agreed, and she immediately started calculating.
The worthless girl was already ten years old. If sold to a wealthy family as a maid, she would fetch at most ten taels of silver. However, if sold to a different kind of place, her looks alone could easily bring in thirty to forty taels.
With forty taels of silver, not only could she pay off the ten taels of debt, but she could also prepare dowries for her daughters, Da Ya and Er Ya, build a spacious earthen house, and send her youngest son, Tang Bao, to school.
The more Tang Yu thought about it, the happier she became, her face blossoming into a smile. Just as she was about to say something more to her husband to finalize the plan to sell the worthless girl, she heard a commotion outside. Stretching her neck to look, she saw the worthless girl standing outside, the washed vegetables scattered on the ground.
"You wretched girl! These vegetables were to be sold, and now you've ruined them. How can we sell them for a good price now? I'll beat you to death, you useless thing!"
Tang Yu, seething with rage, put her son on the bed, grabbed a vine stick from the wall, and rushed outside, raining blows on Tang Xin.
Despite it being the coldest part of winter, Tang Xin only wore a thin, tattered inner garment and a small, worn-out outer coat. The thin clothes offered no protection against the vine stick, and sharp pains surged through her, making her want to run. But her arm was tightly gripped by Tang Yu, leaving her with no escape, forced to endure blow after blow.
She gritted her teeth, enduring the intense pain on her back and legs, her eyes fixed on her father, who watched her beating without intervention, her gaze filled with hatred.
Tang Zhutou buried his head low, trying to block out the sounds of his wife's curses and his daughter's muffled cries.
Her father's cowardice and incompetence crushed Tang Xin's spirit. Unable to break free from Tang Yu's grip, she refused to be beaten without a fight.
Seeing the green vegetables at her feet, she stomped on them in frustration. The tender greens couldn't withstand such abuse, their juices staining the ground like green blood, giving her a strange sense of satisfaction. She stomped again, grinding them underfoot.
"You little wretch, daring to ruin my vegetables! I'll beat you to death, you worthless thing!"
Tang Yu's face twisted with fury. She yanked Tang Xin aside and intensified the beating, each strike more ferocious than the last.
As Tang Xin looked at the ruined vegetables, a twisted smile appeared on her face, and even the vine stick's blows seemed less painful.
It was unclear how long the beating lasted, but Tang Xin's body grew numb, almost impervious to pain. Tang Yu finally tired, discarding the deformed stick and picking up the crushed vegetables with a pained expression.
"You wretched girl, I should have sold you long ago to stop you from bringing disaster to this family. Why don't you just die?"
Most of the vegetables were unsalvageable and couldn’t be sold. Tang Yu cursed as she stood up, slapping Tang Xin hard twice.
Instantly, Tang Xin's cheeks swelled red, her eyes glaring at Tang Yu, a bright, chilling stare.
At that moment, Tang Da Ya and Tang Er Ya, having played enough outside, returned laughing and chatting.
Seeing Tang Xin's swollen cheeks, Tang Da Ya remarked to Tang Er Ya with schadenfreude, "That worthless girl got beaten again. Mother is really something, though. She shouldn't hit the face. If the face gets ruined, how will we sell her for a good price?"
