Chapter 147: Is Xiao Fu Bao Disliked? The Whole City Loves Me With Their Lives
**Chapter 147: Watching Fish in the Afternoon**
Suisui liked fish, so when Liu Hemeng suggested going to see them, she nodded excitedly, "Yes, let's go!" The two little girls happily held hands and headed to the backyard to see the fish.
The water system in the prince's mansion was quite intricate. In general, it circled the entire residence in a loop. Many believed that water symbolized wealth, so the water was designed to flow in a way that kept it within the mansion, symbolizing wealth accumulating at home. As a result, the mansion had numerous ponds, and there were plenty of places where fish could be raised.
Liu Hemeng led Suisui to a pond located on the path between the main courtyard and the eastern courtyard. Although Liu Hemeng didn’t visit the mansion often, she had heard from her grandfather that the fish in this pond were not specifically owned by anyone. Even if the fish died, no one would scold them.
With the princess consort not around, Liu Hemeng wasn’t sure if any of the concubines in the mansion would cause trouble. She had seen Concubine Su’s antics before, although those were eventually suppressed by the princess consort. Still, the quality of concubines brought in by Prince Qi in recent years was truly declining.
But Liu Hemeng kept these thoughts to herself, not daring to say them out loud. Since they had no other options, they decided to watch the fish that were "ownerless."
Suisui was oblivious to all of this, happily following her elder sister’s lead.
The path was a bit long and took the two children quite some time to walk. Yet, neither felt tired. The two little girls cheerfully made their way over.
The afternoon sun warmed the water, and the fish leisurely swam at the surface, enjoying the pleasant warmth. The pond was filled mostly with various types of goldfish. Suisui didn’t recognize them but found the mix of red and white fish swimming together to be beautiful. The interplay of colors as the fish swam quickly made it look like a vibrant painting constantly shifting before her eyes.
There was no proper viewing area by this particular pond, so the girls initially squatted by the water’s edge. Feeling that squatting was too tiring, Liu Hemeng eventually sat down on the ground. Seeing her sister sit, Suisui also plopped down beside her.
In the past, Suisui would have worried about dirtying her clothes since she had only a few old outfits. But now, she had plenty of clothes. If one got dirty, it wouldn’t matter much, right?
Suisui hesitated a bit, but then followed Liu Hemeng’s example and sat beside her.
The two children sat cross-legged by the pond, watching the fish swim back and forth.
Liu Hemeng didn’t recognize many of the fish but that didn’t stop her from chatting away. “That big-headed one looks nice; its eyes are so big!” she exclaimed. “And that one has such a big red lump on its head!”
She continued to comment on every fish she saw, even if some were just the same ones coming back into view. Suisui listened and looked wherever her sister pointed, her eyes darting back and forth until she felt a bit dizzy. The little girl didn’t know what was what, so she simply nodded and agreed with everything.
Liu Hemeng, pleased by Suisui’s responses, became even more animated. “Those two just kissed! I swear, they kissed!” she exclaimed. “Wow, why are they fighting right after?”
As she got louder, Suisui looked in the direction Liu Hemeng was pointing but didn’t see any fish kissing. Instead, she saw a red-capped fish suddenly leap out of the water. It jumped gracefully, flipping mid-air before splashing back down, sending ripples cascading across the pond’s surface. It was a stunning sight.
Suisui was so surprised that she couldn’t close her mouth. She tugged at Liu Hemeng’s sleeve, too excited to speak, and her little feet bounced up and down.
Liu Hemeng was equally impressed, her voice rising with excitement. “Wow, so beautiful! Who would’ve thought such a chubby fish could jump like that? I wonder if it’ll do it again?”
Finding sitting inadequate for viewing, Liu Hemeng soon switched to lying on her stomach. She was completely absorbed in watching the fish, hoping to see another spectacular jump.
Suisui was also captivated and, seeing Liu Hemeng lying down, she followed suit.
The two little girls lay by the pond, their eyes barely blinking as they stared intently at the water.
Aunt Xiang was initially inclined to tell them to sit properly, but she didn't want to dampen their excitement. After all, they were already dirty from sitting, so what difference would a little more dirt make? The most important thing was that the children were happy.
Watching them with a gentle smile, Aunt Xiang turned her head when she noticed a commotion nearby. It was Concubine Ren approaching, and Aunt Xiang quickly stepped forward to alert the girls. “Miss Suisui, you should get up now. Concubine Ren is coming.”
Concubine Ren? Who’s that? Suisui looked up, confused, and saw a vaguely familiar, elegant lady.
Seeing an elder approach, Suisui knew it was impolite to keep lying down. She quickly got up, brushing off the dust on her clothes. Liu Hemeng also sprang up quickly.
However, as the two girls dusted themselves off, a cloud of dust billowed up, causing Concubine Ren, who had just planned to greet them, to stop dead in her tracks.
Even though children playing and getting dirty was normal, Concubine Ren’s immaculate hair, freshly applied hair oil, and new clothes suddenly felt threatened by the swirling dust.
She didn’t want to go over there!
Caught between the desire to avoid getting dirty and the awkwardness of ignoring the children, Concubine Ren hesitated. She had already felt mentally besieged by the dust cloud.
Suisui stood obediently, watching Concubine Ren with curiosity as she tilted her head, confused.
Concubine Ren: ?
So cute… Should I go over there after all?
