Chapter 148: Is Xiao Fu Bao Disliked? The Whole City Loves Me With Their Lives

**Chapter 148: Concubine Ren**

Suisui had been in the manor for several days now, and Concubine Ren had sent gifts, so how could she not know of the child's existence?

On the first day of Suisui’s arrival at the manor, Concubine Ren had briefly encountered her. However, they hadn’t exchanged any words at that time.

Concubine Ren didn’t have a deep impression of Suisui back then.

Yet, in recent days, she had heard that the usually indifferent Princess had been keeping Suisui close, doting on her as if she were a precious jewel. They would either go to see flowers or venture out for outings.

Concubine Ren thought to herself that Qi Wangfei didn’t even do this for her own son, the Sixth Prince.

She even speculated that Qi Wangfei might have been affected by the Prince, having longed for a daughter for many years, and perhaps she had gone a little mad.

Today, upon hearing that Qi Wangfei had gone to the palace, Concubine Ren had initially planned to sneak out of the manor to play.

Alas, remaining in the manor meant that she would be bombarded with trivial matters from various courtyards, which was truly bothersome.

She was just a weak and helpless consort temporarily managing affairs; why were there so many things to deal with?

As a result, Concubine Meng had left the manor before her.

Rumor had it that she had gone to offer incense?

Concubine Ren had spat at that—who offers incense at this hour?

Whether she believed it or not didn’t matter, since the other had left in a hurry.

She didn’t know where Concubine Meng had gone, but it was clear she was no longer around.

After lunch, before she could take her afternoon nap, two of her maidservants had come to disturb her.

Concubine Ren had been filled with questions.

She thought to herself, were they out of their minds?

When Qi Wangfei was around, they acted like mice cornered by a cat, not daring to show their faces.

But with Qi Wangfei absent, they came to her?

Didn’t they know that Qi Wangfei was not easy to manage? A fuss now would only result in everyone getting punished equally—like mixing mud together.

If they didn’t know, they might think she was easy to bully, so they came to take advantage of her absence, right?

The two maidservants had started arguing over a piece of cloth, and in the end, Concubine Ren had them fight it out right then and there. They were unwilling, but only after crying and making a scene did they leave.

Annoyed by their bickering, Concubine Ren decided to take a stroll and bring some snacks to the Fifth Prince's room.

On her way, she ran into Suisui and Liu He Meng and had initially intended to greet them amicably.

However...

She couldn't take this! She had a slight cleanliness obsession, and they were so dirty that she couldn't bear it!

Suisui had planned to stand obediently and wait for Concubine Ren to approach so she could bow and greet her.

Suisui hadn’t formally learned the rules yet and didn’t fully understand what kind of status Concubine Ren held.

But seeing her dressed so splendidly, she must be a significant elder, right?

So, she should greet her.

As it turned out, Concubine Ren was standing still, and Suisui and Liu He Meng stood in place as if time had been paused, not moving at all.

After a while, Suisui was the first to react. She gently tugged at Liu He Meng’s sleeve and quietly asked, “Sister, should we go greet her?”

It was customary for juniors to greet their elders, which Suisui understood well.

However, she was unsure if the manor had different rules, so she asked.

Liu He Meng initially didn’t react but then recalled how they looked so disheveled and thought that Concubine Ren might indeed be disgusted by their dirty appearance.

She couldn’t decide whether to approach or not.

After all, she was just a child!

However, after some thought, she felt that since the other person held a high status, if they didn’t greet her, it would be easy to become the subject of gossip.

Considering this, Liu He Meng took Suisui's hand and whispered, “That’s Concubine Ren. We should go over and greet her, just say ‘Concubine Ren, greetings,’ and follow my lead.”

Suisui didn’t understand everything but was willing to listen to her sister.

Her sister knew more, so following her guidance would surely be correct.

Suisui obediently nodded, and with Liu He Meng holding her hand, the two little girls walked toward Concubine Ren.

Concubine Ren:...

Ah! Here they came.

She thought, I should have walked a little faster and pretended not to see them.

Now, she felt her earlier aversion starting to fade as she began to see Suisui’s face clearly.

The thin little body accompanied by a small face that couldn’t be larger than a palm.

What stood out the most was her pair of round, sparkling big eyes.

Those eyes were so clean, it felt like nothing dirty in the world could possibly exist within them.

While children generally have lively and innocent eyes, Suisui’s seemed exceptionally pure.

Though both children were approaching, Concubine Ren found herself only captivated by Suisui’s eyes.

To be honest...

At first glance, Concubine Ren furrowed her brow instinctively.

Those round eyes resembled those of the young masters in the manor.

The Prince also had round eyes.

However, as they got closer, Concubine Ren saw her own reflection in Suisui’s eyes—clean and clear.

It was a sight not found in the eyes of the young masters or the Prince.

This was a fresh and magical experience.

Concubine Ren felt curious, so she lowered her gaze to the approaching little girl.

Suisui looked up first, peeking at Concubine Ren’s beautiful face. When their eyes met, she shyly smiled and averted her gaze, instinctively wanting to shrink back to her sister’s side. But then she remembered what Lele had said—not to fear those before her, nor to fear the unknown future.

Everything would be alright; her job was to bravely take the first step and move forward with determination.

Suisui didn’t fully understand, but she grasped that Lele was encouraging her to face everything bravely.

So, her desire to retreat diminished, and her body stiffened as she stood still.

As they approached, Liu He Meng hurriedly performed a proper greeting, “Concubine Ren, greetings.”

Suisui followed suit, her voice soft and gentle, which touched Concubine Ren’s heart.

Without needing to say more, just the little girl’s sparkling eyes and soft voice were genuinely heartwarming.

Especially for someone who had no daughter and longed for one, it felt like a blessing from the heavens.

A daughter born without pain, and a soft and adorable little girl at that—who wouldn’t want such a gift?

Concubine Ren thought to herself, no wonder Qi Wangfei had been acting like she was under a spell these past few days, taking the child out to play every day.

If this were her...

She would be a bit moved too.

Realizing that she was feeling a bit tempted, Concubine Ren quickly brushed those thoughts aside.

No, no!

She hadn’t enjoyed being single yet; how could she take on another child?

Having to raise two children was already her limit.

Adding another was out of the question!

Even if it were without pain, that wouldn’t work either!
