Chapter 144: Is Xiao Fu Bao Disliked? The Whole City Loves Me With Their Lives
Chapter 144: Steamed Goose and Duck Ribs
Suisui looked like a valiant general ready to go into battle, her expression one of determination as she approached. The little girl stood up straight, her neck held high, exuding confidence.
Qi Wangfei felt both delighted and pained at the sight.
Oh no!
The idea of ear-piercing was too painful, and she felt anxious. Just a moment ago, she had been encouraging Suisui, but now she pulled her close, a reluctant expression on her face.
Physician Liu had grown accustomed to this and turned his back, quietly preparing the tools. He was even ready for the possibility that they might not proceed with the piercing today.
After all, what was the rush? There was always another day to do it.
Not wanting to pierce her ears was not a big deal either; many in the capital didn't have ear piercings. Men would also choose to pierce their ears, wearing flashy ornaments, which was simply a matter of personal preference. Physician Liu thought to himself that the overall atmosphere in the Daxia Xia was quite good.
Suisui had prepared herself, but when her mother pulled her back, she looked up at her in confusion, clearly not understanding the change of heart. Her innocent expression tugged at one’s heartstrings.
Qi Wangfei gently touched Suisui’s little ear, adjusting the tassels beside it, and said with a smile, “Mother is going to take your brother to the palace to pay respects to the Empress Dowager later. I won’t be by your side, and I can’t help but worry. Let’s do it tomorrow instead.”
Physician Liu: ...
Tomorrow? But tomorrow is just another day, Your Highness!
Unfortunately, trying to persuade her would be futile.
He would just have to wait. His tools were ready, and since Liu Hemeng was to be Suisui’s companion for reading, Physician Liu figured he would be visiting the royal residence every day. Thus, they could pierce her ears whenever she was ready.
Liu Hemeng, not fully understanding the adults' conversation, quietly took Suisui’s hand, enjoying the softness of her grip.
As they stuck close to their mothers, Suisui was cheerful about the delay in getting her ears pierced. “Okay, I’ll listen to Mother,” she said, feeling a little relieved.
Her earlier courage had been just a facade, and now that she learned they would wait, she felt a small sense of relief. She knew she shouldn’t think like that, but she couldn’t help it!
After a bit of internal struggle, Qi Wangfei finally decided to wait until tomorrow.
As for whether they could actually do it tomorrow? Who knows? Qi Wangfei had already told Physician Liu it would be the next day.
After their morning lessons, Feng Xuanrui and his brothers came from the classroom to the dining hall.
Upon seeing Suisui, they eagerly surrounded her like a flock of chicks.
Though they had seen her hat before, it was still a favorite.
“How soft and cute!” one of the boys exclaimed as he touched her hat and the tassels.
“Her hair is even smoother!” another added, running their fingers through her hair.
“She’s even softer than the tassels!”
…
Once children find something interesting, they huddle together.
Surrounded by a gaggle of brothers, Suisui felt nearly smothered by their affection.
Their touch was heavy!
As they reached for her hat, the tassels, and even poked her dimples, Suisui cried out in distress, “Help me! I can’t breathe!”
Qi Wangfei watched helplessly and reminded them, “If you all crowd around her like this, she won’t be able to breathe!”
At this, the boys finally realized and scrambled to give her some space.
Feng Xuanrui quickly positioned himself behind Suisui, declaring, “You all don’t know how to take care of her; let me handle it! Step aside!”
Feng Xuanbo looked confused.
Was he trying to show off again?
Feng Xuanbin wasn’t having any of it and puffed out his chest, “What do you mean I can’t take care of her? I’m strong! I can fight and carry her!”
In the midst of his declaration, he dared to provoke Feng Xuanrui.
Caught off guard, Feng Xuanrui took a few steps back and inadvertently knocked Suisui down, making her fall onto her bottom.
Feng Xuanqing watched, alarmed. “Hey, hey! Sister!”
Feng Xuanjie quietly walked over to help Suisui up.
Suisui, when she fell, looked bewildered, completely unable to grasp how she ended up on the ground after her brother had bumped into Feng Xuanrui.
This was a bit too complex for her to understand.
As she was lifted back to her feet by Feng Xuanjie, Suisui tilted her head in confusion, her expression one of utter puzzlement.
Feng Xuanrui turned around, worriedly asking, “Sister, does it hurt? Are you okay?”
Suisui shook her head gently, indicating that she was fine.
Seeing her shake her head, Feng Xuanrui relaxed considerably and turned back to confront Feng Xuanbin.
Feng Xuanbin felt a bit guilty but hadn’t even made it over to apologize when Feng Xuanli punched him out of the blue.
Feng Xuanbin: …!
Oh no, Feng Xuanli was coming for him! Quick, run!
The children’s playful squabbles continued, and Qi Wangfei watched from the sidelines. She was relieved to see Suisui had not been hurt, so she didn’t pry further.
As for the boys’ rambunctiousness?
It was best not to meddle too much.
As long as they didn’t get into serious trouble, everything would be fine.
Besides, being lively and energetic was a sign of good health.
After a while, Qi Wangfei took them to wash their hands and sit down for lunch.
Today’s main dishes included colorful steamed buns and honeyed pancakes.
Considering the boys would have physical education classes in the afternoon, there were also four meat dishes: roasted chicken, braised venison, steamed goose and duck ribs, and carp sashimi.
Additionally, there were several vegetable dishes for balance.
The final soup was a clear stewed pigeon soup.
The table was set with an array of colorful dishes, and just the sight of it was enough to whet one’s appetite.
Once seated, Suisui's eyes flitted from dish to dish, captivated by the variety.
Seeing her excitement, Qi Wangfei smiled and asked, “Which one do you like, Suisui? Mother will have someone serve it for you.”
Once Qi Wangfei announced it was time to eat, the boys dug in with gusto.
Their movements were boisterous yet graceful, maintaining a sense of decorum.
Watching her brothers enjoy their food made Suisui’s mouth water, and she couldn’t help but point to the steamed goose and duck ribs, whispering, “I want to try that one.”
Even though there were many new dishes on the table, Suisui had been around long enough to notice the chef’s creativity hadn’t fully unfolded yet.
Thus, most of what she had seen were new dishes.
But the steamed goose and duck ribs were close by, and the aroma wafting from it was irresistible.
She couldn’t resist its allure and decided to taste it first.
