Chapter 257: The First Heartbeat - Zhen'er’s Request (Part 1)

---

“What’s wrong?”

Looking at the woman’s pale and sickly face, Xiao Ruiyuan furrowed his brows in concern. The worry in his eyes was unmistakable.

“Uh, n-nothing!” Mo Yan stammered, lowering her head to hide the strange feeling rising in her heart. “Lord Xiao, what brings you here personally?”

Xiao Ruiyuan stared at her without speaking, his expression growing colder.

They hadn’t seen each other for almost two months. The woman before him seemed to have been through a serious illness. She was already petite, but now she appeared even more frail. Her once small, delicate face had become gaunter, making her eyes seem larger but devoid of their former confident sparkle. There was a deep sorrow hidden in her brows.

What on earth had tormented her like this? It angered him that she was brushing him off and didn’t want to tell him the truth.

Thinking of this, Xiao Ruiyuan clenched his fist, the aura around him turning colder.

At this moment, he subconsciously ignored the fact that they weren’t even friends. How could a girl easily share her troubles?

The gaze above was too sharp for Mo Yan to ignore. She buried her head, trying to play the part of a quail, not understanding what she had done to make him unhappy. But why was there this strange sense of guilt in her heart?

Fortunately, everyone at home was busy with their own matters, and the hall was empty. Otherwise, the atmosphere would have been even more awkward.

Xiao Ruiyuan watched Mo Yan coldly. Seeing that she didn’t even want to lift her head, clearly not wanting to see him, his cold expression cracked slightly.

Due to his upbringing, he had long since learned to conceal his emotions. But facing this girl who had a special place in his heart, he felt a deep sense of helplessness and frustration.

Feeling the increasingly cold aura emanating from him, Mo Yan was on the verge of breaking down. Dealing with someone so moody was truly exhausting!

However, continuing to stand there wasn’t a solution either. Mo Yan mustered up the courage to look up at the imposing figure. Stammering, she said, “L-Lord Xiao, please, have a seat. I’ll go make you some tea!”

Without waiting for Xiao Ruiyuan’s response, Mo Yan almost fled to the kitchen.

Xiao Ruiyuan watched her retreat, momentarily dazed. He instinctively touched his face. Was he really that frightening?

Staring at the teapot bubbling on the stove, Mo Yan patted her face in frustration. In her own home, she had been scared into the kitchen by a guest. How embarrassing!

In the hall, Xiao Ruiyuan found a chair and sat down, his eyes fixed on the kitchen door. Just as he started to feel impatient, he sensed something scratching at his foot.

Looking down, he saw a fluffy, round little furball—a baby tiger cub!

The tiny ball of fur had rushed in, spotting the unfamiliar man, and immediately started scratching him, trying to drive him away.

Xiao Ruiyuan reached out with two fingers and pinched the loose skin on the back of the cub’s neck.

As soon as the little furball’s short legs left the ground, it started flailing wildly, letting out threatening growls. But still being in its infancy, its growls were anything but intimidating, sounding rather adorable instead.

Finding this amusing, Xiao Ruiyuan couldn’t help but use his other hand to pinch the cub’s fluffy ear. Hearing the cub mewling even louder, he let out a pleased chuckle, the low sound like the richest aged wine.
