Chapter 134: Fluorescence - Rebirth of the Noble Daughter

 Chapter 134: Fluorescence

The day before the Lantern Festival, Xu Mingyue brought Bai Siruo to the Feng residence to visit Feng Hai and check on his injuries.

They brought two large carts full of items, including many high-quality medicinal herbs that were extremely effective for treating external injuries and were quite valuable.

Madam Feng was in the Yunhai Courtyard taking care of Feng Hai, so it was Madam Wen and Feng Jinyao who received the visitors.

After a few days of rest, Feng Jinyao's complexion had improved, showing a healthy glow.

Xu Mingyue, having heard a lot from Bai Siruo in the carriage, stepped forward and took her hand, saying, "I see you've lost weight."

"It's nothing. Winter tends to affect one's appetite, so I've eaten less. I'll be better by spring."

"Sigh, I went with my grandmother to her hometown after the festival and only returned yesterday. If I had known about your troubles, I would have come back sooner."

Knowing that Xu Mingyue meant well, Feng Jinyao accepted her concern graciously.

"You're not too late. My nephew is recovering, and though my father's injury is severe, the military doctors say he will heal with enough rest. So, please don't worry, Sister Xu."

What was meant to be a visit to comfort Feng Jinyao turned into her comforting Xu Mingyue, who couldn't help but laugh. Bai Siruo and Madam Wen also joined in the laughter.

"This time, I've brought a special ointment for Uncle's injury. It contains Ziyu extract, which is known for its remarkable effect on external injuries. Don't forget to use it on Uncle."

Saying this, she had the ointment box brought over and gently opened it. The pleasant fragrance was immediately noticeable.

Madam Wen was overjoyed, confident that this medicine would help heal her father-in-law's injury completely.

However, Feng Jinyao cast a suspicious glance at the items and couldn't help but ask, "Mingyue, I've heard that Elder Xu is known for his integrity. Where did these precious items, and the hundred-year-old ginseng last time, come from?"

Xu Mingyue was momentarily speechless but quickly understood Feng Jinyao's concern and chuckled lightly.

She couldn't tell the truth, so she had to make up a story.

"My grandfather had a close friend from his hometown, who is now a renowned merchant in Jiangnan. These items were gifts from him. Although my grandfather is old, he is still in good health and doesn't need these medicines. I've met that old gentleman, and he and my grandfather have been friends for decades. So you can use these items without worry; there will be no problems."

Hearing this, Feng Jinyao was somewhat reassured. Seeing Xu Mingyue's honest demeanor, she felt that she might have been overthinking it and invited the two to sit down.

Xu Mingyue lied without batting an eye, almost revealing her grandfather's habit of feigning illness. She quickly changed the subject.

"I also brought something for you and Madam."

She took out several small, gold-plated powder boxes. When opened, the delicate, light pink powder inside was beautiful and had a subtle fragrance.

"This is a special fluorescent powder made in the palace. I brought it for you to decorate your lanterns. Tomorrow is the Lantern Festival. Have you made your lanterns?"

Making lanterns for the Lantern Festival was a tradition of the Jin Dynasty.

On this day, from children to the elderly, everyone would make a lantern to carry through the streets. If they met someone they liked, they could give them the lantern. If not, they could enjoy the activity by themselves.

Feng Jinyao and Madam Wen exchanged glances and smiled. They had been so busy with family matters since the new year that they had forgotten about this tradition.

But with their father still bedridden, would it be appropriate for them to go out?

Just as they were about to refuse, they heard Madam Feng's voice from outside, "Tomorrow, all of you should go out for a walk. You've been cooped up in the courtyard for too long. Take Ah Xu and Xiao Er with you."

"Mother-in-law, I shouldn't go. Yunhe still needs my care." Madam Wen said, feeling conflicted. Her son was her top priority and she couldn't relax until he was fully recovered.

Seeing Madam Wen's anxiety, Madam Feng spoke kindly.

"Just go for an hour or two. You've been through a lot lately and need to get out and see the world. It will do you good, and don't forget, you're carrying another child. If you're happy, the baby will be happy too. We don't want to bring a sighing, unhappy grandchild into the world. That would be your fault as a mother."

Although her words seemed like she was scolding Madam Wen, they were all for her good. Madam Wen thought for a moment and agreed.

She was now four months pregnant, a stable period. Going out meant either being in a carriage or at a restaurant watching the lights, which wouldn't be too strenuous. Besides, Feng Jinxu would be there too.

He had been staying at home recently, spending most of his time in the study when not taking care of Yunhe. Going out would be good for him too.

Feng Jinyao was worried, though. In her previous life, the Lantern Festival night was the beginning of her second brother's nightmare. If Princess Changlin took an interest in him again, it would be disastrous.

She was pondering how to refuse when Feng Jinlin unexpectedly agreed.

"Perfect timing. Canwen has never seen the Lantern Festival in Dongdu City. I'll take him tomorrow to broaden his horizons." He stepped into the front hall, respectfully greeting Madam Feng and Madam Wen before teasing Bai Siruo.

"Cousin, you've found a good husband. He even dared to stand up to the Princess. Bravo! We should invite him tomorrow. He's a long-time friend of Su Cheng, and it would be more lively."

The news about Xiao Mu Qian had reached Bai Siruo, and she found herself with a slightly better impression of him.

Bai Xiang praised him three times upon hearing the news, and both Bai Sifu and Princess Wen Yi grew more fond of their future son-in-law.

But as a young woman, discussing her future husband so openly made Bai Siruo shy. Her cheeks flushed slightly as she glared at Feng Jinlin. "If you want to invite him, do it yourself. Don't use my name to scare people."

Seeing the usually bold Bai Siruo act shy, Feng Jinlin burst into laughter. "Alright, alright, I'll invite him myself. I'll have Su Cheng invite him so we can get a good look at this future cousin-in-law!"

Bai Siruo, annoyed, hit him twice, while Xu Mingyue stepped in for her friend. "Second Young Master is still in the mood for jokes? You must be confident about the upcoming exams. I'll congratulate you in advance for passing."

Though her words were flattering, she was genuinely teasing him.

The ladies present all laughed, but Feng Jinlin, with his thick skin, didn't mind the teasing.

After the laughter died down, Feng Jinyao thought her brother's suggestion was good. She had never met the second grandson of Prince Kang's Mansion, and it would be good to see him this time.
