Chapter 230: Culinary Desires
"This dish is roast duck with a deliciously crispy texture."
"No need to introduce the sour cabbage fish, Young Master Xie has already tasted it."
"The remaining dish is twice-cooked pork, made by stir-frying fatty and lean pork belly with chili."
"This one is stir-fried green beans. Nowadays, the beans are very tender making it a refreshing side dish."
"This is cucumber strips mixed with kudzu root powder."
"Cold-tossed red radish strips, refreshing and tasty, just a common pickled dish."
"Cold-tossed bitter melon strips, cooling and detoxifying."
Ye Muyu patiently explained each dish without any signs of annoyance. Xie Yu, following her explanations became even more enthusiastic especially as every dish appeared very appetizing to him. Additionally, several of them were dishes he had never tried before.
"They all look delicious, so I won't hold back." Xie Yu grinned and started to help himself. Following the tradition, he first took a sip of the shiitake mushroom and winter melon chicken soup, finding it truly delicious. The chicken soup was rich in flavor, and the shiitake mushrooms didn't overpower it. The winter melon was stewed perfectly, neither too soft nor too firm, with the added fragrance of the chicken soup.
After finishing the soup, he eagerly began to savor the meat. The twice-cooked pork in front of him became his first choice because he had already smelled its enticing aroma.
Picking up a piece and putting it into his mouth, Xie Yu felt the meaty fragrance spreading instantly. Despite having had lunch earlier, he decided to leave room in case he couldn't eat much in the afternoon. Consequently, he only had half a meal at noon.
Now, he truly appreciated the wisdom of his decision. The food was incredibly delicious. Even though it was the same type of food the taste was inexplicably different.
It wasn't Xie Yu's fault. The way Ye Muyu cooked was similar to future generations. At this time, there were still limitations in cooking in Da Chu, such as the limited use of spices.
Ye Muyu had consulted Chu Heng about whether making these dishes would attract too much attention. Chu Heng assured her that there were many skilled craftsmen in the folk and in the prosperous era of Da Chu, talent was abundant. Cooking wasn't considered a remarkable skill.
With this reassurance, Ye Muyu was at ease. In her pursuit of culinary satisfaction, she naturally sought perfection.
Moreover, cooking could also earn some money. Ye Muyu was pleased to have this culinary skill, allowing her to save some private money and make her family's life better.
Meanwhile, on Xie Yu's side, he had tasted each dish. Initially, he didn't have high expectations for the roast duck because it was available at Fragrant Pavilion. However, Fragrant Pavilion's roast duck was fatty, a preference among customers.
Why didn't they like lean meat? Because of the quality of firewood.
Unexpectedly, after taking a bite of the roast duck, Xie Yu fell in love with it. It was fatty yet not greasy, lean yet not dry, the ultimate praise for meat. Especially the crispy and fragrant duck skin.
Xie Yu couldn't resist and ended up eating three pieces. If he hadn't eaten lunch, he might have continued.
Similarly, Xie Wan had a similar experience. As a legitimate daughter, her daily meals were not bad but she couldn't compare to Xie Yu.
Considering even Xie Yu found these dishes to his liking, it was even more so for her, an unloved young lady. So, with the care of the maidservant behind her, Xie Wan eat to her heart's content, feeling very satisfied.
The most surprising, however, was Chu Heng.
Chu Heng unexpectedly eat quite a bit and the more he eat, the more resentful his gaze became.
