When death arrived, Li Manning thought it would be her liberation, but she was met with even greater devastation.
Her child had died before she did.
The thought of her child's death caused the dark aura around Li Manning to surge again, and the black mist permeating her body glowed with a crimson light.
Qin Ruan approached her calmly, taking leisurely steps.
She walked as casually as if she were in her own home, strolling up to the bar counter and taking out an unopened bottle of water from the cabinet. She twisted the cap open and brought it to her lips, drinking directly from the bottle.
Perhaps it was her composed and serene demeanor, or perhaps it was some kind of trustworthy aura emanating from her, but Li Manning's vigilance waned further and further.
She stared at Qin Ruan's every move, curious as she asked, "Who are you?"
Qin Ruan finished drinking the water, twisted the cap back on, tilted her head at Li Manning, and smiled as she spoke, "My name is Qin Ruan. This is the first time I've seen you, and you're even more beautiful than on TV."
Li Manning worked in the entertainment industry and was a well-known A-list celebrity. She had encountered all kinds of people praising her with grand and elegant words.
Qin Ruan's simple compliment, however, sounded genuinely sincere to her ears, once again evoking new emotions within her.
After a long while, Li Manning pursed her lips and softly thanked, "Thank you."
"You're welcome. You truly are beautiful."
Qin Ruan sat beside her, resting her arm on the bar counter, supporting her head with a single hand.
She gazed at Li Manning with a soft smile in her eyes, a smile that contained both gentleness and meaningful inquiry.
Li Manning slowly lowered her head, and the ominous energy surrounding her disappeared without a trace.
Perhaps it was a kind of intuition, or perhaps it was the inexplicable sense of security that Qin Ruan brought to her, but she completely let go of her guard against the young girl before her.
With her full and contoured features, her naturally curved lips slowly moved, answering Qin Ruan's previous question, "I entered the entertainment industry by chance, and I never expected to become famous."
Qin Ruan asked her, "Do you enjoy acting?"
Li Manning slightly furrowed her brows and then relaxed, "It's alright, I can experience different feelings when I act. I try to empathize with the characters I portray, their psychology and personalities, and truly become a part of the story."
"Occasionally, I become immersed in the role and can't free myself. Sometimes, I lose control of my emotions, as if I were truly a character in the script, experiencing all of their emotions deeply."
Qin Ruan pursed her lips and smiled lightly, "It seems like you really enjoy acting."
"I suppose so," Li Manning replied uncertainly.
Because sometimes, delving into a role was more about escapism for her.
Escaping the oppressive feeling of the real world, escaping from the cruelty and exploitation of her parents.
Qin Ruan asked again, "What about music? Do you like it?"
Li Manning shook her head and firmly denied, "I don't like music. I don't enjoy playing the piano, singing, or dancing. They make me feel pressured, but I..."
She wanted to say "parents." The thought of her parents' heartlessness and cruelty made it impossible for her to say the words "mom" and "dad".
Li Manning took a deep breath and spoke with emotional resonance, "They always force me to accept things I don't like, telling me how important music is for an artist, how it can make me shine and bring endless applause."
Qin Ruan gazed at Li Manning's exquisite profile, a flicker of darkness passing through her eyes.
Just as she had suspected.
Li Manning's parents were musicians, and they had nurtured her musical talents since she was young, which was understandable.
However, as parents, they never inquired whether their daughter liked it or not. They imposed music on Li Manning.
The cracks in this father-daughter and mother-daughter relationship must have existed since childhood, accumulating until they finally erupted.
Qin Ruan moved her hand away from her forehead, crossing her arms on the bar counter and resting her delicate chin in her hands. She wore a faint weariness on her face.
Glancing at the time in the living room, it was already 9 PM.
At this time, if she were in the Hou family, she would be resting in bed.
Qin Ruan looked at Li Manning beside her, a peaceful demeanor with a hint of gentle temperament.
"Who do you plan to kill next?" she asked calmly, without any fluctuations in her tone, as if discussing something ordinary or even inconsequential.
Li Manning once again looked at Qin Ruan in astonishment. Did she know about her current identity? Did she know that she had killed many people? She was truly curious about Qin Ruan.
"What exactly is your identity, and why aren't you afraid of me?" she asked.
Qin Ruan's facial expression remained gentle, and her tone was soft as she replied, "In the mortal realm, you can call me Heavenly Master. Although I'm not very professional, I'm considered a member of the metaphysical community."
"In the underworld, you can call me the Envoi. All the evil spirits and demons in this world, as long as they commit wrongdoing, fall under my jurisdiction. I am responsible for extraditing them to the realm of the dead or hell."
A shadow of gloom passed over Li Manning's brows and eyes, and she regarded Qin Ruan warily. "You're not really here to capture me today, are you?"
Qin Ruan shook her head. "No."
Li Manning furrowed her brows. "Then why are you here?"
Qin Ruan responded with a calm tone, "To prevent you from killing innocent people."
Li Manning's face carried a cold intent. "I won't kill them. They haven't done anything to me."
Qin Ruan's gaze shifted, scanning the nearby display cabinet, and her eyes lowered, focusing on the large storage space underneath.
She hinted, "Who else do you want to kill? Your mother doesn't seem to be in any life-threatening danger."
Li Manning followed her gaze, and the aura of blood and gloom spread throughout her body, revealing a sinister red glow in her eyes.
"She deserves to die!"
Cruel and heartless words spilled from Li Manning's mouth.
Qin Ruan chuckled lightly, "Then why didn't you kill her?"
Li Manning gritted her teeth, "My son's ashes are with her. I can't let my son be a lost and wandering soul."
The smile on Qin Ruan's face faded. "Your son?"
"Yes," Li Manning replied.
Li Manning stood up and slowly walked towards the display cabinet.
In the spacious hall, a chilling wind blew, and the blood mist surrounding Li Manning grew denser. She resembled a ferocious beast devouring humans in the darkness, exuding a strong and dangerous aura.
"Bang!"
The cabinet door underneath the display cabinet was destroyed by an unknown force, revealing Li Manning's mother, bound and stuffed inside.
Her face was pale and bloodless, with two streaks of tears mixed with dried blood, looking extremely disheveled.
As Li Manning approached step by step, mother Li reacted as if she had seen a demon. Her pupils constricted, and she shook her head while whimpering.
Li Manning dragged her mother out of the cabinet, her gentle expression turning pale, her face contorted and monstrous.
She stared coldly at her mother and asked in a chilling tone, "Where are Little Bao's ashes?"
"Sob... sob..." Li's mother continued shaking her head, and Li Manning pulled out something that was blocking her mouth. "Tell me, where is Little Bao?!"
"He's dead, he's dead. I don't know, Ningning, spare me, Mom really knows she was wrong, everything was your father's doing! Little Bao was also my grandson, how could I kill him? Ningning, spare me, I beg you to spare me. Mom knows she's sorry, please spare me..."
