Mo Yan thought it was just a small incident, but she soon found herself with a little follower trailing behind. She stood in place, helplessly watching the child not far away, waving to signal him to come over.
The child ran over, his bright eyes looking very innocent.
Based on the force of his kick, which caused the middle-aged man so much pain, Mo Yan didn't believe he was harmless. "Speak up, what do you want to do by following me?"
The child looked a bit hesitant. "I-I came to, to thank you!"
Mo Yan looked at him with amusement. "No need for thanks. Just don't steal again in the future. Otherwise, if you get caught next time, you might end up with broken limbs."
It was meant as advice, but unexpectedly, the child burst into tears. "Wuu, I don't want to be a thief, but nobody wants to hire kids to work. I have a little sister to support. If I don't steal, she'll starve to death."
Mo Yan felt a pang in her heart. Seeing the child on the verge of convulsing with tears, she quickly pulled him into a hug to comfort him. "Alright, alright, don't cry. If your sister knew her brother was crying in the street, she wouldn't know how to laugh at you."
With that, she took out a handkerchief from her sleeve to wipe his tears, not minding the dirt on his face.
Her words seemed to work, as the child immediately stopped crying. However, he still looked pitiful with his sniffling.
Mo Yan took him to a small restaurant, ordered a few dishes, and chatted with him as they ate. That's when she learned that the child and his sister had been kicked out by their stepmother six months ago. To support themselves and his sister, he resorted to stealing.
"Big sister, I know stealing is wrong. I only steal food, not money. Please believe me," the child pleaded, as if trying to prove something.
Mo Yan sighed and said softly, "Big sister believes you."
Although the child stole things everywhere, it was out of necessity. Fortunately, despite being a bit cunning, he hadn't lost his original intentions.
The child seemed to lighten up after unburdening himself and started eating heartily. But after a few bites, he stopped moving.
Mo Yan looked at him in confusion and noticed him shedding tears again, though silently this time.
Seeing her gaze, the child quickly wiped his face with his hands and cautiously said, "Big sister, can I eat a little less and take the leftovers home to my sister?"
Mo Yan's nose tingled with emotion. She patted his head and said, "Eat as much as you want. Later, big sister will order some more delicious food for you to take back to your sister."
The child was overjoyed, but he insisted on not letting Mo Yan order more food. He hurriedly shoveled rice into his mouth.
Mo Yan felt uncomfortable watching him, but she also didn't want him to feel uncomfortable, so she didn't insist on ordering more food. She just ate a few more bites casually and then put down her chopsticks.
After the child finished eating, Mo Yan paid for the meal and had the leftover food packed for him to take home to his sister.
Before parting ways, Mo Yan wanted to give the child some money, but he refused. "Big sister, you're a good person. I've been caught stealing many times, but no one has ever come to rescue me like you did. There are still good people in this world. Big sister, you will be blessed."
Mo Yan blushed at his solemn words. The child didn't ask for much, just to support himself and his sister. Since he insisted, she didn't push it.
"Where do you live? Next time, big sister will come to see you and your sister."
But the child shook his head and refused to say. After thanking her repeatedly, he left with the food.
Mo Yan watched his retreating figure with helplessness. She had wanted to ask where he lived so she could ask Master Xing for help and find him a decent job to support himself and his sister. But he had run off just like that.
