Chapter 168: The Peasant Girl’s Splendid Manor
Chapter 168: Punishing the Absurdity of the New House (2)
"Hmph! Representing the villagers to demand justice from the Mo family?" Upon hearing Wang Dali's shameless words, Cai Shi, who had arrived on the scene, directly mocked him, "What audacity! Clearly, you just want to extort money from the Mo family, yet you frame it so grandiosely. Even as a woman, I feel embarrassed for you."
Wang Dali, fearing Lin Yong but not Cai Shi, raised his voice to curse her, "What business is it of yours, you loud-mouthed woman? Go home and take care of your child!"
Cai Shi chuckled disdainfully, looking down on Wang Dali's behavior. She couldn't be bothered with this ruffian and scoundrel, so she loudly addressed the onlookers, "Everyone here is sensible. Let me explain the situation clearly so we can all understand."
Then, Cai Shi explained the reason why Wang Dali and the others had come to cause trouble at the Mo family's house.
It all started several months ago when the Mo family's vegetable business was still ongoing. Some people in the village began to consider venturing into greenhouse vegetable cultivation, including Cai Shi's family.
Later, Cai Shi listened to Mo Yan's advice and persuaded her family not to pursue it. She also informed other villagers about the risks involved. Most of them heeded her advice and planted soybeans on their fallow land.
However, a few stubborn individuals refused to listen. They believed that they could replicate the success of the Mo family's greenhouse vegetables and sell them at a high price to wealthy households.
So, these people emptied their savings, borrowed money from others, and finally managed to build their own greenhouses.
In early spring, when the temperature was still low, greenhouse cultivation indeed resulted in faster and better growth compared to outdoor cultivation. Thus, these people were convinced that their greenhouse vegetables would be profitable. They diligently tended to their crops.
Initially, there was nothing wrong with this approach. However, they made a mistake by overprotecting their crops. Even as the temperature rose, they refused to open the greenhouses to let the vegetables receive sunlight and fresh air. Despite advice from experienced farmers who helped tend to the Mo family's greenhouse, they stubbornly persisted.
As time went on, their vegetables gradually turned yellow and emitted a musty smell. It was only then that they realized something was wrong. They started following the Mo family's previous practices of opening the greenhouse during the day and covering it at night.
Although the vegetables eventually regained their color, they still tasted inferior. Compared to the Mo family's vegetables, let alone those grown in ordinary households, theirs paled in comparison. They couldn't sell their vegetables for a high price, especially not to wealthy households.
In the end, they had to drastically lower their prices and only managed to sell a small amount to poor families. Eventually, as more fresh vegetables became available, nobody wanted their produce.
They had invested all their money in building the greenhouses, depleting their last savings. If they couldn't recoup their investment, they would face financial hardship for the next year.
In comparison to the Mo family, which was currently building a large house, how could they not feel resentful? Thus, under Wang Dali's instigation, they came to cause trouble, claiming that the Mo family had cheated them and demanding an explanation.
After recounting the story, Cai Shi glared at Wang Dali with disdain. "Everyone, it's clear that it wasn't the Mo family who forced them to start greenhouse cultivation. Why should the Mo family be held responsible for their losses?"
"Wang Dali, you're in the wrong here. As Mrs. Cai said, you chose to cultivate vegetables on your own accord. If you didn't make a profit, how can you blame the Mo family?"
