 Chapter 18: Driving Away

"Have you been to my room?"

He spoke with a suppressed voice, his eyes dark and unclear.

The anger, hidden vulnerability, and suppressed fury within him were revealed, pressing against his chest.

"You have a fever."

Jiang Chenchen turned from the railing, jumped down, and reached out to touch his forehead. "Feeling better now?"

Sheng Mingsi grabbed her wrist, preventing her from touching him.

His pale and weak face lacked color. "Who let you in?"

"I heard you were..." She was organizing her words, about to mention fear, but he coldly interrupted, "Did you hear anything?"

Jiang Chenchen looked down at the hand clutching her wrist, the grip so tight that her knuckles turned white, as if he wanted to break them.

Instinctively, she stepped back.

Sheng Mingsi didn't let go, closing in menacingly with a gloomy and terrifying gaze.

"Speak!"

Jiang Chenchen retreated until her back was against the railing, not understanding the source of his anger but sensing intense danger.

The shadow of his tall figure loomed over her, like everyone who posed a threat to her. She would do everything in her power to bring them down.

But she didn't want to harm him. The only contradiction in all these years, she had freed herself from his grip, flipped over, and jumped off the balcony.

Sheng Mingsi's eyes widened, and he reached out to grab her, but only caught a piece of her clothing.

A sound came from below. His breath caught as he leaned over to look down, seeing her lying on the ground.

Below was a flower bed with gravel, and he could see scrapes and bloodstains on her face, hands, and ankles as she struggled to stand up.

She looked up at him.

In those eyes that were usually expressionless, there seemed to be a trace of imperceptible grievance.

Sheng Mingsi furrowed his brow, gripping the railing tightly.

He turned away.

What did it have to do with him? She jumped on her own!

He walked back into the room, forcefully closing the door.

Seeing the towel that had been placed on the bed, he stared at it for a moment, then pursed his lips, turned around, and went out. He opened the door and pulled the person who was still in place inside.

"Sit."

Sheng Mingsi made her sit on the sofa, fetched a medical kit, and asked, "Does anywhere on your body feel uncomfortable?"

Jiang Chenchen shook her head.

Sheng Mingsi crouched down and examined her. There were abrasions on her face, chin, palms, wrists, and ankles.

No broken bones.

"It might sting a bit when I apply the ointment. Bear with it."

While doing this, he was both professional and serious.

Jiang Chenchen didn't make a sound.

Sheng Mingsi found it strange. He looked up at her. "Doesn't it hurt?"

"I can endure it."

After six years lying on a bed in the laboratory, what was this pain?

Jiang Chenchen's expression remained unchanged.

Sheng Mingsi seemed to lighten his touch. After disinfecting the wounds, he finally applied a bandage to the deeper cut on her chin.

He was very serious and professional in his actions, not noticing how close they were at this moment.

Jiang Chenchen's hand touched his forehead.

The soft, warm hand, delicate touch, the scent of antiseptic. Sheng Mingsi's movements paused.

"No more fever."

Her breath as she spoke fell on his face.

Sheng Mingsi felt his ears heat up. His face darkened, and he attached the last piece of tape, stepping back a couple of steps to stare down at her.

His tone was cold again.

"Are you pretending to be stupid, or are you really stupid?"

Jiang Chenchen didn't know what had happened to him, but he seemed very angry.

Why was he angry?

Was it because of her touch just now? Since her parents' death, he was the only person she had seen with a little bit of care.

Because the him in her memory was wonderful.

But he seemed unhappy now.

She didn't know what to say, and it seemed like she didn't want to speak.

"Leave."

He was driving her away.
