Chapter 65: The reborn of paranoid boss cannon fodder wife
Chapter 65: Late Night Snack Together
After the ancestral ceremony and dinner, with the business matters settled, Xiao Cheng, Bai Lu, Xiao Wei, and others, bid farewell to the Xiao family members in the mountains and returned to the new town, the city, and the southern market.
Li Hongying and the aunts helped Bai Lu gather dozens of kilograms of snails and also gave her many vegetables and fruits as a generous gift.
The ancestral medicine wine from Grandpa and Grandma was shared, with a small bottle each for Bai Lu and Xiao Cheng to take back.
People from the family with mature fruit trees picked various fruits for Xiao Cheng and Bai Lu.
They also received a good number of eggs, including double-yolk eggs, all packed tightly in the front of the car, making it almost impossible for Xiao Wei to find a place to sit.
Truly a pitiful kid.
Of course, other Xiao family members who were developing outside also received plenty of vegetables and fruits from their mountain relatives.
A convoy of trucks and buses, nearly two hundred Xiao family members, joyously returned to their hometown for the ancestral ceremony.
Back in town, the night fell.
Xiao family members gradually disembarked and returned home. Xiao Cheng left a truck behind, planning to use it to visit private graves the next day, while the others, along with Xiao Dashuang, headed back to the brick factory, returning the truck to the factory owner.
The lights were on in the courtyard corridor. Bai Lu and Xiao Wei were organizing the things they brought back from the countryside.
Following Bai Lu's instructions, Xiao Wei dragged a large basin to the well, poured all the snails into it.
Bai Lu explained that snails freshly picked from the river had a lot of mud in their stomachs. Soaking them in clean water for a day or two would help them spit out the mud, making them more delicious when cooked.
The eggs were placed by Bai Lu in an enamel basin, stored in the bottom layer of the cupboard for future consumption.
Vegetables like Chinese cabbage and oilseed rape were separated and placed in a ventilated area in the kitchen to prevent them from rotting when pressed together.
Bundles of vegetable hearts tied with straw were placed in a cool and shaded area. They would be untied tomorrow morning to let the leaves shine after being blown by the wind all night.
Fruits like green plums and oranges were placed in a large fruit basket on the Eight Immortals table, free for anyone to take whatever they liked.
Finally, everything was organized.
With tired steps, Bai Lu headed to the kitchen to fetch water for bathing. However, upon reaching the kitchen door, she noticed Xiao Wei, standing on a small stool, pouring water into a large pot near the stove. The fire under the stove was already burning with a red flame.
"Really capable!" Bai Lu smiled, gesturing towards the small guy descending from the stool. "Thoughtful little helper."
Xiao Wei, with an expression strikingly similar to Xiao Cheng's indifference, opened his mouth.
"Alright, I know. It's your big brother's order, right?" Bai Lu rewarded the little guy with a head pat while still wearing a full smile.
Once she said what he wanted to say, Xiao Wei had nothing more to add. He pursed his lips and remained silent.
Bai Lu lightly nudged his small shoulder. "Alright, go to the room, get some fruits to eat. Aunties said that green plums are sweet and crispy. I'll call you when the water is hot."
"The water jar is empty," Xiao Wei declined the offer of fruits, picked up the bucket, and walked out without hesitation.
However, in the next second, the bucket handle was grabbed, and Bai Lu said, "Wait, I'll pour it later."
Xiao Wei glanced at her feet. "I'll do it."
"I'll do it," Bai Lu insisted, holding onto the bucket handle.
"I'll do it," Xiao Wei also didn't let go.
The bucket handle became a battlefield for a tug-of-war.
Just when victory was about to be decided, a long and well-defined hand intervened, using an unmatched force to stabilize the bucket and take it away.
Bai Lu and Xiao Wei were stunned for half a second, raising their heads in unison.
At the doorway remained the tall and robust back of a man, with long and powerful legs taking steady steps away.
A light breeze dispersed through the night.
Without a word, Xiao Wei went back to his room to do his homework. Passing by the Eight Immortals table, he casually picked up a large green plum.
Bai Lu sat in front of the stove, burning fire.
After a while, she suddenly remembered something, got up, went to a corner, opened a sack, and took out three shiny and red sweet potatoes, throwing them into the stove.
Xiao Cheng returned with water to fill the water jar. Seeing what was happening, he just glanced, didn't say anything, filled the water, and went out again.
It didn't take long for the water jar to be filled.
A rich aroma of roasting spread, accompanied by the excited voice of a girl, wafting out from the kitchen—
"Ah Cheng, Xiao Wei, come out for a late-night snack! There are fragrant roasted sweet potatoes!"
Xiao Wei walked out of the room, seeing Xiao Cheng holding a freshly peeled orange, heading straight for the kitchen.
Perplexed, he followed.
On the four small wooden tables in the kitchen, there was a small winnowing basket containing three sweet potatoes, their skins reddish-purple and slightly blackened, giving off a delicious fragrance.
Bai Lu sat on a stool by the table, smiling and waving at them. "Come and taste it. These are sweet potatoes from Uncle Fu's family. Auntie said they are exceptionally sweet and tasty."
Xiao Cheng glanced at her, placed the orange on the table, sat down, and took a roasted sweet potato, peeling its skin.
Xiao Wei also took one, sat down, and started peeling.
Bai Lu held a roasted sweet potato in her hand, her eyes fixed on the peeled oranges in front of her, the corners of her eyes twitching slightly.
Oranges paired with roasted sweet potatoes, what a devilish combination!
To avoid one person eating the devil's combo alone, Bai Lu, considerate as ever, tore the oranges into three portions.
Xiao Cheng, Xiao Wei, and herself each got one.
Sharing the danger together, facing the unknown.
"Is it delicious?"
Bai Lu blew on the hot roasted sweet potato in her hand, asking Xiao Cheng and Xiao Wei, who had already started eating.
Xiao Wei found it very delicious, soft and sweet. It was better than the candied chestnuts he had seen on the street. Although he had seen roasted sweet potatoes being sold, their appearance was similar to the ones Bai Lu roasted, but he had never tasted them.
The taste of roasted sweet potatoes he imagined... should not be as delicious as the one in his hand, not as sweet.
But big brother hadn't commented yet, so he didn't dare to say too much.
However, in the next second, the man who was leisurely eating roasted sweet potatoes spoke up, giving a two-word review.
"Not bad."
Xiao Wei immediately nodded. "Delicious, very delicious! I've never had such delicious roasted sweet potatoes before!"
Hearing her culinary skills being acknowledged, Bai Lu was
quite happy and satisfied. "Then we'll eat roasted sweet potatoes every day from now on."
Xiao Cheng: "…"
Xiao Wei: "…"
Every day...
It might become too sweet...
After finishing the late-night snack, taking a bath, Bai Lu lay on the bed for digestion. Yes, that's right, lying down for digestion.
Her feet were a bit sore, and her stomach was a bit full. She didn't feel like walking anymore, so she decided to lie down and digest using the power of thought.
One step, two steps, three steps, four steps, five steps...
As she thought more and more about digestion, she became drowsy. Closing her eyelids with effort, she continued to resist the urge to sleep, using her thoughts to aid digestion.
As she was trying to digest, she finally fell asleep.
Bai Lu fell asleep quickly, perhaps because today's journey was longer than usual, and she entered a deep sleep very soon.
Deep enough that even when the man returned to the room, there was no reaction.
Deep enough that the feet hanging outside the bed were rubbed with the rough palm soaked in medicinal wine, rubbing until the ankles felt slightly warm. Her tightly closed eyes remained shut, her breathing still very steady.
She slept soundly, very peacefully.
