Chapter 15: Safe in the Boss's Arms

"You're still so young, only nineteen, right? I heard you haven't finished high school yet. If you want to take the college entrance exam after giving birth, I can help take care of the child. You won't have to worry about juggling between home and school, saving you from unnecessary stress." These words struck a chord with Bai Lu. She did plan to take the college entrance exam after the pregnancy deception was revealed and everything was settled. However, at this moment, she didn't want any unnecessary complications from the boss before he was dealt with. "Someone's at your house." Bai Lu hadn't figured out a foolproof plan yet when a child's voice accompanied by footsteps approached. Xiao Wei stood in front of Wang Cuihua with a small backpack on his back, expressionless, and said, "Aren't you going home to attend to your guest?" "Are you talking about my house? Someone's at my place?" Wang Cuihua pointed at herself, looking surprised. All her relatives were in the countryside, and Abiao was an orphan with no parents. Who could be visiting her? Ignoring her disbelief, Xiao Wei turned around coolly after saying "your house" and went back to his room to do his homework. Wang Cuihua, half in doubt, returned home. Bai Lu went back to the kitchen to cook. She washed the rice, lit the firewood, and started preparing ingredients. When chopping pork, Xiao Wei entered silently, sat by the stove, and began tending the fire. Bai Lu thought he was like a little introverted gourd; he only showed emotions in front of Xiao Cheng. But the little guy had just helped her in time, so he deserved a reward - a big chicken leg. The other one would be saved for the hardworking Xiao Cheng. When Xiao Cheng returned from work, the smell of delicious food filled the house. Bai Lu, holding a bowl of soup, greeted him with a smile, her eyes sparkling with warmth. Having someone waiting for him at home, food prepared, made him feel the joy of coming home. A warm ripple appeared in Xiao Cheng's deep eyes. He removed the cigarette from his mouth, dropped it to the ground, and crushed it. After washing his hands at the table, the rice was already in the bowl, topped with a big chicken leg. He picked up the chopsticks and put the chicken leg into Bai Lu's bowl. Xiao Wei, seeing this, also added the untouched chicken leg from his bowl to Bai Lu's. Bai Lu looked at the two big chicken legs in her bowl and said, "..." "In fact, I think wings are tastier," she tried to sell the chicken legs back. But before she could do anything, two chicken wings appeared in her bowl, covering the chicken legs like a small mountain peak. Bai Lu: "…" Should she say she likes eating watercress or minced meat eggplant? Would Xiao Cheng think she's trying to raise his child poorly? In the end, with tears in her eyes, Bai Lu finished the two big chicken legs and decided never to leave any for later. They had to be shared, and everyone had to eat together. After lunch, Xiao Wei went to the backyard to check on the old hen, and Bai Lu followed. "It seems like it didn't lay eggs today." She had checked twice, in the morning and when returning from buying groceries, but there were no eggs. Xiao Wei searched the chicken coop inside and out but found no signs of eggs. "Could it have been eaten?" He frowned. Bai Lu, puzzled, asked, "Eaten by what?" As soon as she finished speaking, a slippery and cold sensation under her foot caught her attention. Because her shoes got wet while washing vegetables, she changed into slippers, exposing part of her feet. The chilling touch made her think of a certain creature, causing her scalp to tingle, and her breath stopped. Contracting pupils slowly moved downward. In an instant, her soul nearly flew away! Bai Lu quickly lifted her foot, turned around, and ran, grabbing Xiao Wei on the way. The next moment, she collided with a solid and firm "flesh wall." "A snake... there's a snake!" Running too fast, Bai Lu almost fainted. Luckily, Xiao Cheng caught her by the waist in time. Xiao Wei, with better luck, avoided colliding head-on with Xiao Cheng when Bai Lu crashed into him. But his little hand was squeezed. Bai Lu feared nothing except snakes—those cold, slimy, hidden creatures. How afraid was she? She hid in Xiao Cheng's arms as soon as he didn't move away. Her feet were still on his shoes. Xiao Cheng could feel the nervous heartbeat of the girl in his arms, and her small trembling body. He patted her back, somewhat awkwardly and unaccustomedly. "Xiao Wei took it away." "What?" came a muffled voice from within his arms. Bai Lu just raised her head, and immediately hid back, urging him, "Xiao Wei is only seven years old. How could he catch a snake? You must be lying to me. Go catch it, go catch the snake quickly!" Xiao Cheng touched his nose, his voice light, "Like this, how do I catch it?" Bai Lu didn't realize that something was wrong and straightforwardly suggested, "Use your hands!" Xiao Cheng: "…" With his hand still patting her back, he asked, "You want me to catch it like this?" Bai Lu, still in panic, replied, "Yes." "In here, caught it." Xiao Wei held the snake's neck, swinging the nearly one-meter-long snake. He attempted to bring it into Bai Lu's field of vision to prove that he really caught the snake, not joking. Bai Lu, sensing something, lifted her head slowly, turning in the direction Xiao Wei indicated. Startled, she saw a light brown snake, the same one that had slid over her foot earlier. It was now held firmly by the seven-year-old, twisting its tail in an attempt to escape but failing. Before she could look at it more, her gaze was suddenly redirected, and she was lifted from her original spot. Bai Lu didn't know what happened to the snake afterward because Xiao Cheng carried her back to the bed and left. When she had regained her composure, both Xiao Cheng and Xiao Wei were no longer at home. The empty house left only her. After eating a large orange to calm herself, Bai Lu fetched three big buckets of water from the well. She carefully and thoroughly scrubbed her feet, rubbing them until they turned red and the skin peeled off. Then she dried her feet, put on a pair of thick, all-encompassing cotton shoes, slung a small vegetable basket over her arm, and went out to buy groceries.
