Chapter 58: The reborn of paranoid boss cannon fodder wife
Chapter 58: Fearless
Xiao Cheng pressed his thin lips, holding Bai Lu's foot firmly to prevent her from retracting. Bai Lu, enduring the pain, involuntarily clenched the edge of the table. The pressure on her foot gradually lightened, and she let out a sigh of relief. Suddenly, the pressure increased again, and she bit her lip, enduring the pain.
"Cough... cough..." A sudden cough echoed from inside the house, resembling an old wind bell weathered by the years. It sounded weak and intermittent, indicating an elderly gentleman.
"The old man never listens, sneaking snacks again. Let me check on him. Da Zhuang, remember to massage properly," Grandma hastily instructed before hurrying into the house.
The pressure on Bai Lu's ankle suddenly intensified. The burning sensation surged from the nerves, scorching her from the ankle to the top of her head. She tried to retract her foot instinctively but couldn't. Involuntarily, she kicked, and it landed right on the chest of Xiao Cheng.
"Oh no! What have I done?" Panic filled Bai Lu's eyes as she quickly knelt down to help him up. "I'm sorry, it wasn't intentional. My foot just reacted because of the pain. I didn't feel you massaging too hard, it was just a spasm!"
Xiao Cheng, seemingly unperturbed, raised his hand, and the tension in the room escalated. However, he only flicked away the dust on his clothes. The dark abyss in his deep gaze revealed a subtle smile. He pinched Bai Lu's delicate chin. "Fearless, aren't you?"
His voice was colder than an autumn wind. Everyone in the room held their breath. But instead of a reprimand, he shook off her hand gently and reached for the bottle of medicated wine.
While applying the ointment, Xiao Cheng maintained a calm facade. His nonchalant tone echoed, "Who allowed you to climb the mountain?"
Bai Lu, feeling relieved, answered honestly, "You agreed."
Xiao Cheng sighed silently.
Xiao Wei discreetly peeked out, realizing the dynamics had changed. He continued pretending to focus on the straw hat, seemingly oblivious to the recent event. Bai Lu, who had just kicked his big brother, now clung to him, blinking innocently at Xiao Cheng with a soft voice. "Ah Cheng, my foot hurts..."
Xiao Cheng, holding her slender waist, felt the warmth in his palm. He listened to her soft and helpless tone, penetrating his eardrums.
When he regained his senses, he found himself embracing Bai Lu, who was now sitting on a chair. His hands moved automatically, helping her put on her shoes.
"Cough..." The coughing sound from inside the house gradually approached, accompanied by footsteps.
"The old man can't resist snacks. I'll check on him. Da Zhuang, remember to massage properly," Grandma said as she returned.
Xiao Cheng continued massaging Bai Lu's ankle as if nothing happened. His other hand reached for the bottle of medicated wine.
"If you're not in a hurry, we'll be called when the meal is ready. Everyone is helping withl chores at the square now. Da Zhuang's wife has injured her foot; if she doesn't do anything early, she'll be gossiped about," Grandma suggested.
"You're right," Bail Lu obediently nodded.
"So well-behaved, truly a match made in heaven with Da Zhuang." Grandma beamed with kindness.
Bai Lu: "..."
Xiao Cheng: "..."
Grandpa and Grandma continued with their kind words and blessings. When they mentioned being thirsty, they offered everyone tea. Bai Lu took a sip before asking, "Grandma, do you have chestnut trees on the mountain?"
Grandma nodded, mentioning that the production team had planted some, and their family had a whole mountain with chestnuts, Chinese star anise, and various fruit trees.
"When Ah Fu came back from town, he brought some candied chestnuts for us to try, saying it was a gift from the Xiao family in town. He mentioned they would come to the village to buy chestnuts during the Qingming Festival. Was that you?" Bai Lu briefly explained her purpose.
Grandma, understanding the situation, shook her head, "It's a waste of food..." Grandpa sighed.
"It's such a waste; young people nowadays don't appreciate the value of food. We will sell the chestnuts to Da Zhuang and his wife; we can't waste food," Grandma decisively declared.
As she finished speaking, a figure rushed in from outside. "Grandpa, Grandma, someone is offering a high price to buy chestnuts!"
