Chapter 32: Xiao Cheng's Gentle Smile

"I saw a short gun," Liu Tiezhu sneaked a glance at the police officer's holstered firearm, his tone unwavering. Crack! Despite being battered all over, Li Chengbin managed to crack the wooden handle of his wheelchair. If Bai Lu had been a bit more astute, demanding an immediate examination of the injuries, his entire scheme might have crumbled. The ten officers in uniform remained silent. The injuries sustained by Li Chengbin and Sun Huiping, inflicted by a shotgun with hundreds of iron pellets, were well known. A long-barreled hunting shotgun, brown in color, would cause fatal damage by shattering arteries upon impact. However, these shotguns were considered contraband, gradually disappearing from public view, especially in towns like this. Unaware of the unfolding situation, Liu Tiezhu assumed that Bai Lu was finally out of words and had conceded. Li Chengbin remained silent, fuming at his thwarted scheming. Leaning into the opportunity to mock Bai Lu, Liu Tiezhu remarked, "Do you have anything else to say?" Bai Lu sensed that the police officers likely understood the truth by now. However, observing Li Chengbin's cunning expression, she suspected he might still attempt to manipulate the hospital for fake medical records. With an icy gaze, Bai Lu shifted her demeanor from serene to stern and addressed Liu Tiezhu, "Do you know the consequences of forging evidence?" Due to the town's weak legal awareness and limited educational resources, most residents were unfamiliar with the consequences of committing perjury. Bai Lu raised in an official family, confidently quoted the relevant criminal law. She elucidated, "According to Article 305 of the Criminal Law of the People's Republic of China, intentionally providing false testimony, appraisal, records, or translation in criminal proceedings with the aim of framing others or concealing evidence can result in imprisonment for up to three years or detention. In severe cases, the penalty may range from three to seven years of imprisonment." To ensure Liu Tiezhu grasped the gravity of the situation, Bai Lu translated, "Making false evidence can land you in prison. And for severe cases, up to seven years. Understand?" Liu Tiezhu, thinking this was just a matter of accepting money for a job, had not anticipated the risk of imprisonment. Stricken with fear, he turned to Li Chengbin for guidance. Li Chengbin, still seething with anger, had no intention of intervening. In the sudden silence, Bai Lu continued, "Having a criminal record from imprisonment can affect your child's future. They may not be able to attend good universities related to the military or politics due to the criminal record." Liu Tiezhu, who had ambitions for his future family, was struck with dread at the prospect of jeopardizing his child's opportunities. Bai Lu emphasized the consequences, revealing a deeper layer of fear – a legacy of wrongdoing. The surrounding crowd, including Li Chengbin, was captivated by Bai Lu's authoritative delivery of legal terms. The onlookers shifted their perception from skepticism toward Bai Lu to admiration for her knowledge and representation of justice. As Liu Tiezhu trembled with anxiety, he finally confessed, "I made a mistake last night. It wasn't Xiao Cheng and Luo Shiliu who came out of Li Chengbin's house." The incident concluded. The police officers disbanded and left. Li Chengbin, carried away with resentment, departed. The instigated conflict was swept under the rug. Luo Shiliu, Xiao Dashuang, and Wang Hao, after their close call, wiped the cold sweat from their foreheads and rushed to Xiao Cheng's home, only to be heartlessly locked outside. Behind the closed door, Bai Lu led Xiao Wei into the main house. With the door shut, Xiao Cheng, who had silently followed behind, fixed his deep gaze on the girl's retreating figure. Even though he hadn't completed high school, he understood that high school textbooks didn't include content about criminal law. Seeing the petite Bai Lu exuding an aura beyond timidity or weakness, he recognized the presence of a just adjudicator influenced by his father's righteousness. "I'll go to the backyard to feed the hens," Xiao Wei announced, seemingly aware that the adults had something to discuss. After being led back into the main house by Bai Lu, she said her goodbyes and let go of Bai Lu's hand. As soon as Bai Lu let go, Xiao Wei ran back to his room. Hmm... he was too nervous just now and misspoke. Bai Lu picked up two chestnuts from the table, peeled them, ate them to calm herself, then picked up the familiar small hoe from the corner and went to the backyard. In the corner of the backyard, next to the wall, a large straw hat lay on the ground. The leaves of the chestnut tree rustled as they fell to the ground, covering the newly planted flower and vegetable plot with a new layer of colors.
