Aunt He, the birth mother of the Fifth Miss.
After the death of the Fifth Miss, Aunt He was devastated and lost her will to live. With the Old Madam no longer there to support her and the Second Master not liking her, she knew that she would have to endure laborious tasks in the Southwest. The future seemed bleak, with no hope in sight.
The immense psychological pressure proved too much for Aunt He, and she couldn't hold on for long. Soon after Lady Jin's death, Aunt He followed suit.
With two more gone, along with the missing whereabouts of Shu Yu, the atmosphere among the Shu family became even more anxious and gloomy.
Unexpectedly, just three days ago, the Seventh Miss suddenly slipped and fell into the water. When she was pulled out, she had already passed away.
"You mean the last one is the Seventh Miss?"
The Second Master's legitimate daughter who held a cockroach in the prison cell to scare Shu Yu?
Hou Shi nodded, "Yes, at noon three days ago, we rested by the river, preparing to eat something. Everyone was exhausted and tried to rest as much as possible, so no one noticed where the Seventh Miss went. When the official said it was time to depart, we couldn't find her anywhere. Later, someone shouted that there was a person floating on the river. The official pulled her out and discovered that it was the Seventh Miss, already lifeless."
"She was fine. How could she have fallen into the water?" Shu Yu furrowed her brows.
Hou Shi sighed, "The official examined the riverbank and found signs that she accidentally slipped and fell."
"If she fell into the water, there should have been some noise. Even if she had no strength left, in a life-or-death situation, she would have cried for help. But she didn't make a sound. Also, why would she go to the river in the first place?"
After hearing Shu Yu's words, Hou Shi also frowned, feeling something was amiss. "Are you suggesting that someone harmed her?"
"I wasn't there, so I can't say for sure. I just find it strange," Shu Yu replied.
After speaking, Shu Yu lay down on the bed.
From the expulsion of the Shu family from Dong'an Prefecture to their current journey to Linzhang Prefecture, they were getting closer to their destination. Out of the dozen or so people, five had already been lost.
In reality, this number wasn't considered high. Some exiled groups would lose two-thirds of their members during the journey alone. The fact that most of the Shu family members could arrive safely was partly due to the relatively mild treatment they received from the officials they encountered.
Especially with the leading official overseeing the group, there hadn't been any incidents of abuse, which was already considered fortunate for the Shu family.
While Shu Yu slept, Hou Shi and the Sixth Miss exchanged glances.
They carefully thought about the situation but couldn't figure out who might have harmed the Seventh Miss.
However, at least for the next few days, Hou Shi became even more cautious.
The next morning, the group set off once again.
Due to Shu Yu's injury, she sat on the wooden cart while the donkey continued to pull it.
The leading official had recovered, so Hou Shi and the Sixth Miss also sat on the cart.
The remaining journey wasn't far, and there were no more unexpected incidents along the way. Two days later, the group finally arrived at the capital of Linzhang Prefecture.
Standing at the city gate, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
Shu Yu chuckled. The official had accomplished his
mission, but why did the Shu family members feel relaxed now? Endless toil day and night was the hardest part, wasn't it?
"Let's go, let's head to the prefectural government office."
At the city gate, the leading official instructed Shu Yu and the others to disembark from the cart.
