Chapter 204: An Anxious Old Lady
Chapter 204: An Anxious Old Lady
On the scroll was a depiction of a majestic eagle spreading its wings. The front view captured a lifelike portrayal of the eagle, with sharp eyes that seemed to fixate on its prey, instantly sending a shiver down the viewer's spine. Behind the eagle were layers of overlapping mountain peaks concealed within clouds and mist. On the closest mountain, a waterfall cascaded straight down from the mountaintop, splashing water droplets in all directions, creating a tremendous impact. As Shu Yu gazed at the painting, she could almost hear the piercing cry of the eagle ringing in her ears. The entire artwork exuded a sense of grandeur and magnificence. Shu Yu... absolutely loved it. However, the old lady hesitated and said, "The painting is indeed beautiful, but perhaps it's too sharp. It may not be suitable for hanging in our shop." She glanced at the store and continued, "After all, our shop primarily sells ready-made clothes, and our customers are mostly women. If the scroll depicted landscapes or portraits of ladies, it would naturally be more in line with the atmosphere. However, this eagle is clearly not appropriate." Shu Yu rolled up the eagle scroll and replied, "It's alright. Let's put this painting aside and not hang it up." After opening all the gifts, Shu Yu felt quite content. Even the Lü family, who had been causing trouble, gave her substantial and practical gifts. She divided the dried fruits and pastries given by Doctor Xu and the fruits, instructing Lu Dasong and Lu Sanzhu to take them back and share with the children at home. Seeing that it was getting late, the members of the two households reluctantly left under the old lady's urging. Although there were no customers on the opening day, Shu Yu remained unfazed. Her composure also influenced the other members of the Lu family. However, when the shop opened the next day and hours passed without a single customer, the old lady and the others finally grew anxious. Especially when they went out for lunch and overheard discussions among the shopkeepers in Ningshui Street, it seemed as if their shop, which had only just opened, was on the verge of closure. The old lady felt increasingly worried, and upon seeing this, Shu Yu suggested, "grandmother, I'm planning to visit our village. Why don't you come with me?" "Hmm?" The old lady was puzzled. What would they do by returning to Shangshi Village? Shu Yu smiled and explained, "Don't you remember the incident with Zhang Shu? Village Chief Fan and many others helped us. We were too busy at the time and didn't have a chance to express our gratitude. Now that the shop is up and running, and we have some spare money, it's only right to buy some gifts and pay them a visit to show our thanks." The old lady slapped her forehead. "Yes, yes, yes, look at my memory. I almost forgot. Okay, let's go back now." The shop was temporarily entrusted to Lu Erbai to look after. Ruan Shi and Da Ya were sewing clothes in the backyard, while Da Hu and San Ya were squatting on the ground, writing with tree branches. Although Da Hu hadn't formally started studying at the school, Shu Yu had taught him a few characters. He planned to first earnestly learn the names of his family members. Shu Yu hitched the mule cart and helped the old lady onto the carriage. The mule cart headed towards the old famous pastry shop on Ning Shui Street. However, just as they were about to stop, the old lady said, "Don't buy pastries." Shu Yu said, "These pastries are good. Giving them as a gesture of appreciation shows our regard." The old lady shook her head. "You don't understand. The pastries may be good, and giving them as gifts may earn us some face. But you don't know about those families in the village, not to mention others, the case of Village Chief Fan's family is a prime example. The wife in their family dotes on the boys but treats the girls like weeds. If we give them these pastries, either all of them will be eaten by the boys or they will be secretly consumed by her."
