Chapter 51: Catching the Adulterers - Rebirth of the Noble Daughter

 Chapter 51: Catching the Adulterers

Being of a soft-hearted nature, Liang Gongzi had no choice but to obey his parents' orders and go to the Xu residence for the betrothal.

Today, he hadn't wanted to come but he felt that this might be the last time he would see Wei Lanxuan. Unable to reconcile his feelings of longing, he had to come and bid her farewell.

Sure enough, after being escorted back to his room for a moment, a servant girl informed him that someone was waiting for him at the Mu Feng Pavilion. Though she didn't mention Wei Lanxuan by name, he knew that only someone from the Wei household could send a servant girl. So, despite feeling a little tipsy, he threw on his cloak and hurried to the pavilion.

Looking around anxiously, he didn't see anyone, but he heard a splash from behind the fake mountain and distant cries for help.

Recognizing the familiar voices, he followed the sound and found Wei Lanxuan and her maid both fallen into the water!

"Lan'er!" he exclaimed, forgetting everything else as he jumped into the pond and swam desperately towards her struggling form.

Meanwhile, Bai Sihan, standing nearby, was startled by the sound of the splashing behind her and then saw someone approaching, not Wen Mengsheng, but another young master. Her heart raced, unsure of what to do.

Taking advantage of Liang Gongzi being preoccupied with rescuing Wei Lanxuan, she quickly retreated, fearing the worst.

It wasn't until she had run a fair distance that she regained her senses, her mind swirling with thoughts of what had just happened. Could someone be deliberately trying to frame her?

Panicked and confused, she encountered Bai Siruo and others, who were rushing towards her with a worried expression.

"Sister, we finally found you! I turned around and couldn't find you and I was worried you had gotten lost. We even had to trouble a few sisters to search for you."

Bai Siruo's forehead was damp with sweat, her expression grave and genuine.

Indeed, Bai Sihan had intentionally avoided Bai Siruo and the others earlier, so now she could only pretend to be scared and tearful.

"I don't know how I got lost and I couldn't find any servants either. I'm sorry for making you all worry. It's all my fault."

"It's alright, it's alright. Mingyue and Ah Yao even went to look for the servants from the Wei household. Now that you're found, let's go back and tell them not to disrupt everyone's enjoyment of the snow."

"Yeah." Bai Sihan's clear eyes were filled with tears, resembling a deer in the mountains, evoking a sense of pity.

"Let's go." Bai Siruo took a step forward, about to lead her back, when suddenly a distant scream caught their attention. The other girls, who had been following behind also looked around in panic and asked, "What's wrong?"

Bai Sihan recognized the voice as likely someone discovering Wei Lanxuan's fall into the water. Remembering Wei Lanxuan's behavior towards her at the banquet, she devised a plan.

Feigning concern, she said, "Could it be that our cousin and the others encountered an accident while searching for me? Big sister, let's go and see."

With that, she took Bai Siruo's hand and ran in the direction of the Mu Feng Pavilion, unaware of the dark look in Bai Siruo's eyes behind her.

As the sisters left, the other noble girls exchanged glances. How could they miss such an opportunity for drama? One suggested going to see and the rest eagerly followed.

Behind the fake mountain in front of the Mu Feng Pavilion, a crowd had gathered.

Leading them, Xu Mingyue looked at Liang Gongzi and Wei Lanxuan, both disheveled, and finally understood what Feng Jinyao had meant by 'good show.'

Feng Jinyao stood firmly behind her, fearing Xu Mingyue might not hold up, but feeling the warmth of her support, Xu Mingyue turned back with a smile. "I'm fine. Don't worry."

Though she had no romantic feelings for Liang Gongzi, he was still her fiancé, and their wedding was only a few months away. Seeing such a scene was embarrassing for her.

Feeling genuine concern for Xu Mingyue, Feng Jinyao wondered if she had overdone the act. Worried, she looked at the two in front of her but there was no hint of regret in her eyes.

At this moment, it was better to put a stop to it than to endure being disgraced later.

She believed that someone who could become a female scholar after being rejected by her fiancee, enduring the criticisms of the world, must have an extraordinary determination. So, she believed Xu Mingyue could get through this.

Liang Gongzi was in a panic, his arms full of the semi-conscious Wei Lanxuan, and Xu Mingyue was beside him, her face pale with shock. With his fiancee standing in front of him, this situation was nothing short of catching adulterers!

"Miss Xu, let me explain..."

Before he could say a word, Bai Sihan and Bai Siruo arrived, followed shortly by the other noble girls.

The scene became even more chaotic.

Seeing Wei Lanxuan and Liang Gongzi entangled like this, the gossiping noble girls speculated wildly.

"Could it be that Miss Wei was having a secret rendezvous with Mr. Liang here and was caught in the act by Miss Xu?"

"Oh my, wasn't Miss Wei supposed to be betrothed to the Ninth Prince? Could it be she's already committing adultery before marriage?"

...

The rumors swirled, and Liang Gongzi, embarrassed and at a loss, wanted to explain but didn't know where to start.

Looking at Xu Mingyue, who remained expressionless and the indifferent gaze he received, he felt a chill in his heart.

He wished he were the one unconscious in the water right now, so he wouldn't have to face such an embarrassing situation.

In the pavilion, Duke Wei and several princes were discussing political matters when a servant rushed in, whispered a few words in Duke Wei's ear, and his expression immediately darkened. However, having experienced three reigns, he had long mastered the art of remaining calm in the face of calamity.

The Crown Prince, observing all this, couldn't help but feel uneasy. Could something major have happened in the Wei residence?

Duke Wei knew that if today's incident wasn't resolved properly, it could become a weapon for the Crown Prince's faction to attack them.

They had worked hard to secure their current position and couldn't afford to ruin it now.

So, with an apologetic smile, he rose from his seat and addressed the Crown Prince and the other princes.

"I hope you won't mind, Your Highnesses, but my wife is refusing to take her medicine in the backyard and my servants had no choice but to come find me. I hope you'll excuse my departure to attend to this matter."

With a casual tone mixed with a hint of helplessness, he managed to divert attention away from the incident.

Even the Crown Prince, watching him leave with a slightly hurried pace, couldn't help but wonder what was going on in the Wei residence.
