Chapter 73: Helping - Rebirth of the Noble Daughter

 Chapter 73: Helping

After instructing her servants, Xu Mingyue immediately called for someone to help her get dressed, unwilling to delay even a moment.

"You don’t know this, but when Elder Xu was young, he was saved by Tuan Rong's ancestor. Ever since then, he kept that ancestor by his side, caring for it meticulously. This has continued for six generations, down to Tuan Rong. That's why the Xu family places such importance on this cat."

Bai Siruo explained quietly to Feng Jinyao, in case she didn't understand the situation.

No wonder! The Xu family was so anxious about the lost cat because of this backstory.

Thinking of this, Feng Jinyao stepped forward and said, "Sister Xu, don't worry. Tuan Rong is very intelligent, it won't get lost."

Hearing this, Xu Mingyue smiled bitterly. She didn’t want Tuan Rong to be lost either. If it were really lost, her grandfather...

"Miss, how about I take Chilin to search? This little fox has an extremely keen sense of smell. It found you here, so it might be able to find Tuan Rong too!"

Yunxu suggested, giving Xu Mingyue a glimmer of hope. She looked at Feng Jinyao with eyes full of expectation, as if asking for permission.

Feng Jinyao readily agreed, immediately instructing, "Go ahead. It's just right to help Sister Xu's family."

"Yes."

Receiving the order, Yunxu hurried back to get Chilin.

Poor little fox, it was sleeping soundly in its warm bed, only to be shaken awake.

Its head was still groggy when a piece of brocade cloth was placed under its nose.

This was the brocade Yunxu had just taken from Tuan Rong’s usual sleeping spot, filled with Tuan Rong’s scent.

Chilin slapped Yunxu’s hand away with disdain, its expression clearly saying, 'What are you doing? It's so early!'

Yunxu wasn’t annoyed. She patiently explained, "Tuan Rong is missing, and the Xu family is very anxious. You saw that orange cat yesterday. This cloth is full of its scent. Smell it, and you might find it."

She had said its nose was better than a dog's yesterday, and today she was actually asking it to act like one!

No way.

Chilin turned its head away and faced Yunxu with its back, showing its displeasure.

Yunxu was getting anxious. This little ancestor picked the worst time to throw a tantrum.

"How about this? If you help find Tuan Rong, I'll have Xiuqiu make your favorite chicken patties. How about that?"

Hearing the words 'chicken patties,' Chilin was tempted. It turned its head and looked at Yunxu sideways, as if asking, 'How many?'

Yunxu was amused by its reaction.

"How about ten?"

Usually, Feng Jinyao feared it would get too fat and only allowed three at most. Yunxu was generous, promising ten at once.

"If you don't agree now, I’ll take back the offer. Then you won't get even half of one."

Under both threat and temptation, Chilin finally turned back, reluctantly sniffing the brocade cloth thoroughly before getting up and running outside with a flick of its tufted fur.

"Hey, ancestor, wait for me!"

Yunxu chased after it, shouting.

Inside the house, Xu Mingyue gratefully held Feng Jinyao’s hands, thanking her repeatedly.

"Sister Xu, let’s wait until we find Tuan Rong to talk about this. We should go out now. Cousin, why don’t you stay here? If Tuan Rong returns and no one is here, it would be even more troublesome."

Bai Siruo wanted to go out and help, but she was still not dressed properly, so she agreed.

"Go quickly. Don't delay. I'll wait here for you."

"Alright."

With that, they led the maids, including Huanhuan, out of the courtyard and hurried towards Fahua Temple.

Today, Fahua Temple was as lively as ever.

As Lamei had mentioned, there were even more people than yesterday.

Yunbai and the others had already reached the dried fish vendor, but they didn’t see Tuan Rong. They scattered and started calling out, but the crowd was too dense and their voices were drowned in the noise.

Yunxu followed Chilin, watching it dart through the forest and along the path, occasionally doubling back.

Chilin was furious at the traces Tuan Rong had left.

Was this orange cat crazy? Why were there traces of it everywhere?

Initially agreeing to help only for the chicken patties, Chilin was now determined to find the orange cat and give it a good beating out of sheer frustration!

It sniffed even more carefully, not missing a single spot.

Xu Mingyue and Feng Jinyao caught up quickly due to their fast pace.

"Any luck?"

Xu Mingyue asked Yunxu anxiously.

Yunxu shook her head helplessly. They hadn’t found anything after walking so far.

Xu Mingyue felt a deep sense of despair. "If we can't find Tuan Rong, I'm afraid my grandfather..."

Before she could finish, Feng Jinyao understood and firmly held her slightly cold hand, saying, "We will find it. Sister Xu, you can’t give up now."

This woke Xu Mingyue up. She was right!

"Let’s keep looking."

"Yes."

Following Chilin, seven or eight people walked and stopped, bypassing the bustling temple fair in front of the gate and heading towards the main hall.

Chilin's nose was indeed sharp. Soon, a maid found a few strands of Tuan Rong's fur in a corner.

It wasn’t a special breed, but the Xu family had taken great care of it, so its fur was exceptionally smooth and shiny. Xu Mingyue took the fur and said excitedly, "It’s Tuan Rong’s. It must be nearby!"

With this encouraging news, they searched more methodically.

Today, there were no vendors around the main hall. Most of the people here were selling calligraphy and paintings, so the place was still relatively quiet.

Chilin followed the scent to the main hall, where the smell grew stronger.

Gotcha! It must be hiding inside.

Excited, it dashed in, but its speed startled the noble ladies who were praying, causing them to scream.

With a kick, Chilin was sent flying out of the hall, landing on the stone steps and writhing in pain.

"Chilin!" Jinyao screamed and rushed forward to check its injuries.

Its belly was red and swollen, and its round eyes were filled with tears as it snuggled into Feng Jinyao’s arms.

Bad people! There are bad people inside!

Feng Jinyao glared angrily towards the main hall.

In front of the Buddha, where compassion should reign, someone had viciously harmed a spiritual creature! Ridiculous!

Xu Mingyue and the others gathered around. Seeing the injury on Chilin, her usually calm eyes were filled with anger.

Chilin was hurt while helping. She was determined to find out who dared to do this!
