Chapter 48: Comfort - Rebirth of the Noble Daughter
Chapter 48: Comfort
Bai Sihan looked at the 'sisters' who had just been speaking intimately with her but now seemed to treat her as if she were invisible. Unable to bear this blow, she covered her mouth with a handkerchief and quietly left the pavilion.
Wen Mengsheng, who was standing nearby, noticed and pondered for a moment before following her out.
Bai Sihan felt increasingly aggrieved as she thought about it. With her head down, she ran forward, sobbing softly as she ran.
Back in Qiongzhou, weren't all the young gentlemen flattering her? She couldn't believe that she was being treated like a servant girl since arriving in the Eastern Capital.
As a young girl, how could she endure such a contrast?
When she arrived at the Mu Feng Pavilion, she finally burst into tears.
Following her, Wen Mengsheng was about to enter when he saw her crying with tears in her eyes. There was no beauty in her tears, only a pitiful sight. He couldn't help but feel disdainful in his heart, thinking she was just a rustic country girl.
However, he still put on a caring facade and spoke softly, "Miss Bai."
Bai Sihan didn't expect anyone to be behind her. Thinking that her previous indulgent behavior might have been seen by this person, she immediately panicked. Embarrassment flooded her cheeks, making her blush like a ripe shrimp.
"Who are you?" Her eyes were filled with caution.
"I am Wen Mengsheng, the only son of the Ministry of Personnel's Minister. I am also Wen Yuwei's cousin."
The Ministry of Personnel's Minister was a second-ranked official, a higher status than her uncle. Why would he be here?
Bai Sihan wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes and bowed slightly in greeting.
"Master Wen, have I disturbed you?"
She hadn't paid attention to whether there was anyone around when she had rushed here earlier, so she felt a bit apologetic now.
"Not at all. I was worried that Miss Bai might feel wronged and lost in this unfamiliar place, so I followed you from the pavilion."
"Oh, then you..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Bai Sihan thought of her embarrassing situation earlier. This person said he followed her from the pavilion, so he must have seen her embarrassing side too.
"Young lady Bai, please forgive my younger sister's ignorance. I am here to apologize on her behalf."
"Apologize? There's no misunderstanding between us. There's no need for an apology."
Wen Mengsheng smiled faintly and took a few steps forward, emitting a faint fragrance of orchids, which made people feel comfortable.
"Each flower has its own beauty. Regardless of background, everyone can find their place in this world. My sister is inexperienced and doesn't understand this principle. I hope Miss Bai won't take it to heart."
Using Wen Yuwei's name eased Bai Sihan's embarrassment.
Her heart felt much better after his words and the pent-up frustration dissipated.
"Thank you for your understanding, Master Wen. I feel much better now."
For a moment, she felt a little fond of this Wen Mengsheng.
Seeing her shy expression, Wen Mengsheng sneered inwardly. She was indeed easy to deceive. Seizing the opportunity, he asked, "Did Miss Bai come here alone?"
"No, my elder sister and Miss Feng from the Feng family are here as well. However, my elder sister has a headache, so Miss Feng accompanied her to rest in the side chamber. They should be back at the pavilion by now."
"I see. Thank you, Miss Bai."
Although he said so, Wen Mengsheng was thinking about how he could use her to clear up a misunderstanding with Miss Feng. It was like dreaming to expect her to act as a mediator.
Both of them had their own calculations. After chatting for a while in the pavilion, they thought it best not to attract attention from others as male and female interactions could easily be misinterpreted. Wen Mengsheng left first and returned to the pavilion. Half an incense stick's worth of time later, Bai Sihan, guided by a maid, returned to the pavilion.
Upon entering, she glanced around and headed towards Bai Siruo and Feng Jinyao.
"The temple fair at Fahua Temple is the most lively. I used to go there with my mother and aunt several times before, but they were too strict, and it wasn't enjoyable. There will be another temple fair in a few days. Would you like to come with me then?"
Bai Siruo was mischievous by nature and always loved to join in the fun, but it was unclear where she got this trait from.
Feng Jinyao nodded in agreement, but caught sight of Bai Sihan approaching them. She noticed that her eyes were still slightly red, as if she had been crying.
"What's wrong, sister?"
"It's nothing. The wind blew into my eyes just now, and they got red after rubbing them a few times."
Both of them knew the truth, but the real show hadn't started yet, so they had to play along.
"In that case, sister, you shouldn't leave alone. If someone sees you, it might be difficult to explain."
"Thank you for your advice, sister. I will remember."
Bai Siruo was somewhat surprised by her respectful and gentle demeanor. How did this girl suddenly change her attitude? Could she have transformed after this trip outside?
Just as she was wondering, Xu Mingyue hurriedly arrived.
Apologizing, she explained, "Grandfather is feeling unwell today, so I stayed at home to take care of him and prepare his medicine before coming here. I'm sorry for being late."
They had heard about the elder Xu's recent illness, so they didn't blame her. Bai Siruo even reminded her to take care of herself.
Liang Luo stood beside Wei Lanxuan, smiling smugly.
When Bai Sihan walked in, she glanced at them from time to time, eager to see her steal the limelight again.
However, her expression immediately fell when she saw the future sister-in-law, Xu Mingyue.
