Chapter 152: Fell into the River
Ye Muyu nodded and left with an umbrella.
Originally, Ye Muyu wanted to wear rain boots, but unfortunately after searching for a while she couldn't find any. After some thought, she realized that good-quality rain boots were made of sheepskin or cowhide or perhaps other animal hides. In any case, they weren't something a common rural woman like Ye Muyu could wear.
A pair of sheepskin boots would cost at least four or five taels of silver and those would be the thinnest ones. Compared to the cost of buying an acre of land for four or five taels, sheepskin boots were considered a luxury.
Most villagers wore straw shoes. Unfortunately, Ye Muyu had neither straw shoes nor sheepskin boots, so she could only wear cloth shoes.
At this moment, Ye Muyu couldn't help but feel fortunate. Luckily, she had quite a few pairs of shoes, otherwise, she wouldn't even have had shoes to change into.
As Ye Muyu stepped out, she encountered many villagers heading to the fields despite the wet ground. Although it was unsuitable for digging they could still gather wild grass or pick mushrooms in the mountains.
Ye Muyu walked straight to the school.
The school was on the street beyond the bridge. Just as Ye Muyu reached the main road about a hundred meters from the bridge, she heard a sharp scream.
"Something happened! They fell into the river!"
She looked towards the source of the sound, only to see many students running towards the riverbank. Not only that but some villagers were also anxiously gathering around.
Ye Muyu furrowed her brows and hurriedly approached. She seemed to hear someone shouting that someone had fallen into the river.
What if it was a student? It would likely be a dire situation.
As Ye Muyu was about to pass by the clamor reached her ears.
"Chu Jin and Tang Bao have fallen into the river... Someone please save them over there!"
"Teacher, teacher, Chu Jin and Tang Bao fell into the river."
Ye Muyu was taken aback, thinking she might have misheard. She quickly approached the riverbank and saw Chu Jin struggling in the water.
Her body trembled and she threw away the umbrella before jumping into the river.
"Ye Yunlan!"
Chu Liushi and others had just arrived witnessing Ye Muyu jumping into the water to save Chu Jin.
She exclaimed and other villagers were stunned, taking in a collective gasp. Chu Liushi quickly patted his son's shoulder, urging, "Chu Lin, hurry, save them..."
"Mom, I know, wait a moment." Chu Lin hastily took off his shoes and socks before entering the water.
Zhang, terrified, went to find someone to bring a rope. Meanwhile, Chu Xing and others arrived. Seeing Ye Muyu jumping into the water they were all shocked. They didn't expect Ye Muyu to be so daring, a powerless woman who dared to jump into the river.
The river wasn't narrow, especially with the recent rain, making the water somewhat turbulent.
Chu Xing rushed to take off his shoes without even thinking and joined the rescue effort. At the same time, Chu An and others also followed suit.
Chu Liushi stomped his feet on the shore. "This is a disaster! What has happened?"
Half an hour later, Chu Lin carried the unconscious Chu Jin ashore. Ye Muyu was also rescued. Zhang, who had just arrived, happened to see Wang and the two sisters-in-law quickly fetched a rope.
As soon as the people were rescued, Chu Liushi went to carry the unconscious Ye Muyu back. However, Chu Lin pushed Zhang towards her, saying, "Quick, help Mom. We're not convenient. The sister looks like she's not doing well."
"I'll go get Doctor Lu."
Zhang saw Ye Muyu's pale face and was terrified. This series of events left her somewhat bewildered but she remembered to help Chu Liushi carry Ye Muyu back.
As for Tang Bao, the situation wasn't good either. Since he had fallen into the water for a longer time, by the time rescuers reached him, he had ingested who knew how much water.
