Chapter 188: Handmade Brushes
"Help me with something. Investigate the woman who was following me just now." Chu Heng instructed.
Luchuan looked surprised. It seemed he hadn't expected Chu Heng to know about his skills. Since being sold, Luchuan had never revealed any signs of his abilities. Even when Chu Heng bought him, the slave trader only thought he was physically strong adding an extra two taels of silver to his price. If they knew he had skills the price might have doubled.
Chu Heng a seemingly scholarly person, couldn't have seen through his disguise.
"What's wrong?" Chu Heng turned his head and looked at him calmly.
Luchuan was startled and quickly lowered his head. "Yes, I understand, Master."
Luchuan walked away and Chu Heng wasn't concerned at all. He told Zhang Shu, "Lead the horse carriage and follow."
"Yes, Master." Zhang Shu and his wife, Hu, were ordinary servants. They didn't dare to question or inquire about Chu Heng's orders.
In the village:
Not long after Chu Heng left, Chu Liushi arrived alone.
"Ye Yunlan, how's your health?" Chu Liushi entered and followed Ye Muyu into the study.
Seeing Chu Ziluo diligently practicing calligraphy, she sighed. "This child is clever. Your method saves resources."
"But using water for calligraphy, will the characters look good?"
"Mother, please have a seat. Let me pour you some tea."
Ye Muyu pulled Chu Liushi's hand. "No need, I came to see how the preparations for the banquet are going. At least, we should arrange the tables and chairs properly."
"Your health is just getting better. Don't tire yourself. Is there some herbal tea here? I'll have a bit." Chu Liushi took a clean cup, poured herself some tea, and sipped.
After taking a sip, she expressed surprise. "The taste of this tea, what is it?"
"Mother, this is herbal tea made from medicinal herbs. It's very refreshing to drink in the summer." Ye Muyu explained using common terms.
Chu Liushi took another sip. "Ah, surprisingly it really helps to cool down."
Ye Muyu smiled. Herbal tea was indeed meant to cool the body. Due to the frequent consumption of spicy food at home and the rising temperature, she came up with the idea of making herbal tea. After flipping through the medical book given by Doctor Lu, she had Chu Heng buy the medicinal herbs to make the tea.
There wasn't much, just enough for the family to enjoy.
If it were in her previous life, she would have drunk the most common buckwheat tea in the summer, which was both refreshing and quenching thirst. However, here, she hadn't experienced the saturation of eating too much meat.
"By the way, Mother, there are a few brushes here. My husband brought them back from the school. He said he made them himself, using ordinary rabbit fur. They aren't worth much but they're suitable for the children to practice calligraphy. It saves the trouble of buying brushes and dipping them in water, as regular brushes wear out quickly."
Ye Muyu opened the wooden box revealing several rabbit fur brushes inside.
These brushes were indeed brought back by Chu Heng. He claimed to have made them himself. Ye Muyu wondered if this man could even make clothes considering his proficiency in cooking and brush making.
She had no idea when he had the time to learn all these skills while studying in the county.
When Chu Liushi heard that her third son had made them, she was delighted and found it economical. She laughed happily "Then, let me thank you on behalf of the children."
"Mother, it's nothing. With more scholars in the family, my husband won't be alone. Moreover, these were given by my husband as a gesture of gratitude for the help from the clan."
