Chapter 396: Something Unseen
Chapter 396: Something Unseen
Yuan Laoda's face brightened, and he quickly climbed to his feet, showing no signs of fatigue.
Shu Yu and Da Niu also tensed up and couldn't help but look towards Yuan's wife.
Yuan Laoda leaned over and asked, "What is it?"
"I don't know. Let's take it out and have a look," Yuan's wife immediately widened the hole, fully exposing the box underneath. Both of them smiled in delight.
"It seems that the man didn't deceive you after all. Hurry, take out the box."
Yuan Laoda said, then he used his bare hands to remove the surrounding soil from the box.
Carefully, he took out the box and sat down on the ground with joy. "This is the treasure."
The box in his hand wasn't large, about twenty centimeters long, a rectangular box that looked quite plain.
The box was locked with a small rusty lock, indicating its age.
"What do you think is inside? Could it be silver?" Yuan Laoda's wife eyes sparkled with excitement as she asked.
Yuan Laoda shook his head. "No, it feels quite light, doesn't seem like it's filled with silver."
"Then... banknotes?"
At the mention of this possibility, Yuan Laoda became energized. "Go get a stone, let's smash it open and see."
Yuan Laoda's wife obediently found a stone and handed it over.
The lock wasn't very sturdy. Yuan Laoda found the right angle and smashed it open with one strike. The sound wasn't loud, estimated not even loud enough for the neighboring Auntie Yao to hear.
After opening the lock, Yuan Laoda couldn't wait to open the box and take out its contents.
"It's wrapped quite well." Yuan Laoda commented as he opened the cloth bag inside the box.
To their surprise, the cloth bag was wrapped in several layers of oil paper, giving it an appearance of great importance.
Yuan Laoda and his wife became even more excited. However, their expressions suddenly froze the moment they opened the layers of oil paper.
"What... What is this?"
The moonlight was bright, and the two sat in the courtyard, examining the item in their hands, their brows furrowed.
Yuan Laoda's wife picked up the object wrapped in oil paper, looked at it from different angles, and after a while, she said, "I've never seen this before."
"That man must have fooled you. What kind of weird thing is this? I thought it would be gold and silver jewelry. After all the trouble, we only dug this up." Yuan Laoda was so angry that he almost threw the item in his hand.
Fortunately, his rationality kicked in, and as he raised his hand, he immediately pulled it back.
Yuan Laoda's wife shrank her neck and asked softly, "So, what should we do with this thing? We don't know what it is or what to do with it."
Yuan Laoda was somewhat annoyed. He looked at the item in his hand, then glanced at the courtyard with two holes dug in it. He took a deep breath and said, "Take it back and bring it to the county town another day. Maybe someone there will recognize it, and we might be able to sell it."
Yuan's wife breathed a sigh of relief. "So, shall we go back now?"
"Yes."
"What about the courtyard?" What about the two big holes?
Yuan Laoda wasn't in the mood to fill them up. He waved his hand and said, "We'll come back tomorrow and fill them. Anyway, this courtyard belongs to us now, and the key is in my hand. No one can come in."
As they spoke, they picked up the shovel and the box, and quietly left.
Once they locked the courtyard gate and their footsteps faded away, Shu Yu and Da Niu finally came out.
They looked at the large hole where the box was dug up and after a while, Shu Yu's gaze suddenly paused.
