Yuan Laoda's wife nervously swallowed and said, "It should be. Let's dig and see. If it's not here, it must be somewhere in this courtyard."
Yuan Laoda flicked his hand and took the shovel from his wife. He began digging the ground.
Shu Yu squinted her eyes. So, the mystery lies here?
She raised her head and gestured to Da Niu. Both of them remained motionless, silently watching Yuan Laoda digging the soil.
After a while, Yuan Laoda huffed and puffed and took a couple of breaths. He said, "Why haven't we found it yet? Could it be that it's not here?"
"Maybe we counted wrong. We should try counting from the other side," his wife suggested.
"Alright, let's go over there and dig."
However, after some time, Yuan Laoda sat down on the ground, furrowing his brow. "Still nothing. Could you have been tricked? There might not be any treasure in this courtyard."
Yuan's wife wiped away some sweat. "That's impossible. The man's last words before he died, he couldn't have tricked me, right? He said he buried the treasure here last year when this yard was still empty and no one lived here. It would have been plausible for him to hide something here without anyone noticing."
Yuan's wife had received this information a couple of days ago when all the members of the Yuan family were locked up in the county government office.
Though she held resentment in her heart, life still had to go on. Two days ago, while picking fruits on the mountain, she came across a dying man.
She didn't know how long he had been on the mountain, but he looked disheveled and somewhat terrifying.
He told Yuan's wife that he had a treasure buried in this courtyard and promised a generous reward if she could retrieve it for him. The treasure was of no use to Yuan's wife, but it was crucial to him.
However, at that time, there were officials guarding outside the courtyard, and Yuan's wife couldn't find a way to reward the man even if she wanted to.
Besides, she believed that if it was a treasure, there would be no distinction between who could benefit from it and who couldn't.
She had kept the idea in mind and planned to keep the treasure for herself once she obtained it.
So, she deceived the man with a few words, saying that she would retrieve it when there were no officials around in a couple of days.
Unfortunately, the man was already on the brink of death and couldn't afford to wait for another two days. He passed away within half a day.
Yuan's wife was terrified, fearing that this matter might implicate her. Without saying a word, she hurriedly left the mountain.
Later, a hunter from the village discovered the man's body on the mountain and promptly reported it to the officials, who happened to be stationed near Yuan's residence.
The officials quickly determined the man's identity. It seemed he had gone missing a year ago.
Yuan's wife didn't dare to inquire further, but she was the only one who knew about the treasure hidden at Yuan's residence.
Yesterday evening, when her husband returned, she couldn't wait to tell Yuan Laoda about it.
Yuan Laoda had the idea of severing ties with his fourth brother, especially after their parents firmly declared the intention to cut off relations. Once they severed ties, they could reclaim the house, and the treasure hidden inside would naturally be at their disposal.
His wife didn't believe she had been deceived. "He was almost at death's door, and he didn't even recognize me. There was no benefit for him in tricking me. Let's keep searching. You rest for a while; I'll continue."
She took the shovel from Yuan Laoda's hand and started digging on her own.
After digging for a while, she returned to the previous spot and continued digging downward.
