Chapter 400: Leaving After the Township Exam

Due to the small number of people, there was no need to separate tables for the meal.

Chu Jin was originally taught by Chu Heng to eat quietly and not speak during meals. With Master Lin still present, he became even more restrained, maintaining an especially quiet demeanor.

Chu Ziluo also behaved well while eating.

Chu Heng raised his wine cup and toasted Master Lin.

Master Lin took a sip and realized the wine wasn't very spicy and its alcoholic content was low. It seemed that Ye Muyu wasn't exaggerating. He relaxed a bit, fearing getting drunk.

"Mr. Chu, I appreciate your hospitality today. I hope Chong Jin hasn't caused any trouble for you." Master Lin said politely.

"Just a child, how could it be considered troublesome? Please don't worry about it Master Lin." Chu Heng replied.

"I heard that you went to find other scholars in the afternoon to teach at the village school. Did you find anyone?" Chu Heng inquired.

Master Lin nodded, "Yes, I found Mr. Wu from the county. However, he is substituting for Mr. Liu and will only be available to teach at the village school after Mr. Liu completes the township exam."

"Mr. Wu?" Chu Heng pondered, "Mr. Wu is not young and being a local he probably won't have to go through the trouble of taking the imperial examination again. It seems appropriate. You've considered it well Master Lin."

Master Lin had been searching for a suitable teacher for a while, which was why he was able to finalize things in the afternoon.

"Yes, that's the consideration. The children in the village are intelligent, and since they are eager to learn and their parents are willing to send them, it wouldn't be convenient without a long-term teacher. Although Mr. Wu is older and his teaching methods are somewhat old-fashioned, he can help the children get started and establish a solid foundation. When the children grow older, they can go to the county school, making things much easier."

"That's why, although Mr. Wu is substituting for Mr. Liu, it's only for one class a day which is somewhat optional. However, it's not easy to offend Mr. Liu, so we have to wait until after the township exam before Mr. Wu can come to teach at the village school."

"Mr. Chu, rest assured. I will be teaching at the school until Mr. Wu arrives." Master Lin assured. He wasn't the kind of person to shirk responsibility, after all he wouldn't just leave without notice.

Chu Heng was relieved. He didn't have to find another place for his son, Chu Jin, to study. Since he was about to take the township exam, sending Chu Jin to the county school now wouldn't be convenient. Master Lin's consideration was quite thoughtful.

"Master Lin, thank you for your meticulous consideration. Allow me to offer you a toast." Chu Heng raised his wine cup, clinking glasses with Master Lin.

Afterwards, they discussed Chu Jin's studies.

Chu Jin felt like he was being treated as a parent throughout the entire meal, feeling a bit nervous.

Ye Muyu noticed the boy's anxious appearance and couldn't help but smile. She didn't interfere, though. After all, both parties were doing it for the good of Chu Jin.

Master Lin unexpectedly ended up drinking quite a bit during the meal. However, with Chu Heng intentionally controlling the alcohol, it didn't go overboard.

Chong Jin also followed suit, eating to his heart's content.

After dinner, it was already dark outside. Although they didn't need lanterns, it was barely possible to see the road.

Master Lin got up to bid farewell.

Chu Heng called Luchuan to escort them but Master Lin politely declined, "Mr. Chu, no need. I've already troubled you today. The school is nearby, just a few steps away. There's no need to bother with sending us. We can easily walk back."

"Then, Master Lin, please take care on the way."

Chong Jin followed from behind, and Chu Ziluo caught up from behind. She placed a small jar in Chong Jin's hand.

"Little Sister Ziluo, what's this?" Chong Jin looked at her in confusion.

Chu Ziluo smiled and said, "Did you forget? It's the honey pomelo tea we had at noon."
