Chapter 5: Insulted
Xia Lu was freezing cold. While her young miss had a cloak to keep warm, she only had a regular winter coat, which was barely sufficient.
Feeling increasingly anxious, she began to provoke Wen Yuwei.
"Miss, the people from the Feng family are definitely doing this on purpose! It's been almost two hours now. Shouldn't we go outside and check?"
"Alright, go quickly. If you find out where Miss Feng is, we can go see her directly."
"Yes!" Xia Lu hurriedly ran outside.
She hadn't been gone for long when she encountered two stout and stern-faced maids blocking her way.
Startled, Xia Lu forced herself to remain calm and asked them, "Who are you? What do you want?"
"Are you Miss Wen's maid?"
"Yes, I am."
"Our Madam's condition has worsened, and Miss Feng is unable to leave her side. The maids around her are all busy in the rear courtyard. We were specifically instructed by our Miss to escort Miss Wen out of the residence. The carriage outside is ready. Miss Wen can leave now!"
Xia Lu gritted her teeth. She had waited for so long!
Not only couldn't she meet Feng Jinyao, but she couldn't even find any close maids. Instead, they sent two random maids to dismiss her. Were they trying to bully her family, the Wen family?
Just as she was about to argue with them, the maids bypassed her and headed straight for the Moon Pavilion.
Inside the Moon Pavilion, Wen Yuwei's expression turned ugly upon hearing the maids' intentions. However, being someone who cared about her reputation, she couldn't afford to lose her temper.
It was understandable that Feng Jinyao couldn't meet her due to her mother's illness. Such filial piety was admirable. However, since the jade pendant hadn't been delivered yet, she couldn't just leave like this.
After calming herself down, she turned to the two stern-faced maids and said, "Since you're here, and my aunt is ill, as her niece, I should visit her. Could you please lead the way?"
With that, she signaled to Xia Lu, who reluctantly stepped forward and handed over some silver coins from her sachet. Softening her tone, she said, "I hope you will accommodate us."
Unfortunately, these two maids were known for their stubbornness. Without wasting any words, they simply nodded and gestured for them to follow, their expressions leaving no room for negotiation.
Wen Yuwei, accustomed to a privileged life in the Eastern Capital, couldn't help but feel angry at their behavior. But she swallowed her pride and followed them.
As they walked, Xia Lu hurriedly tidied Wen Yuwei's clothes. Wen Yuwei's face turned pale as she glanced fiercely at the Feng family's residence before leaving.
The two maids watched as they boarded the carriage before returning to the corner gate.
Inside the carriage, Wen Yuwei was furious. She pushed over a box of pastries that had been placed nearby, scattering them all over the floor.
"The people from the Feng family are so ungrateful! How dare they treat me like this! Just wait, I'll make sure they pay for it."
Her once beautiful features twisted with anger, and Xia Lu joined in, stirring up trouble beside her.
"Yes, yes, especially those two maids. Miss, you must punish them severely in the future!"
Taking a deep breath, Wen Yuwei silently vowed to remember this humiliation inflicted upon her by the Feng family.
"Feng Jinyao, if you continue to disrespect me like this, don't blame me for not showing you any mercy."
As the sound of horse hooves echoed, the Wen family's carriage headed towards the eastern part of the city.
Meanwhile, in the Ning'an Courtyard, Feng Jinyao summoned the Bai family's maid, Bai Mama, under the pretext of attending the Bai family's banquet the next day.
She dismissed Yunxu and instructed her to keep the surroundings clear, leaving only the two of them in the room.
"Bai Mama, I didn't call you here today to discuss the grandmother's birthday banquet, but rather because of my mother's illness."
"Why does Miss suddenly mention this?"
"My mother's illness has been unusual this time. It has not improved for several months. I secretly took some residue from her medicine and found something suspicious. It seems someone deliberately harmed my mother. However, I cannot determine who is behind this at the moment."
Bai Mama was shocked. She had thought that Madam's illness was just a recurrence of an old ailment, exacerbated by the winter weather. She hadn't expected foul play.

After instructing Bai Mama, Feng Jinyao had Xiuqiu escort her out of the courtyard. Then, the two maids who had been waiting outside came in to report.
"Miss Wen left, but she gave the residence a fierce glare. I'm worried that..."
One of the maids, with a round face and silver plate, spoke up, her tone filled with concern.
"It's alright. You both did a good job today. Go to Xiuqiu's place and collect your rewards."
"Thank you, Miss! Thank you, Miss!"
With their rewards in hand, the maids quickly forgot their worries, while Yunxu, standing nearby, looked solemn.
