Chapter 200: How Could Children Not Be Charming?

As Concubine Ren watched this scene, she felt both amused and a bit sour inside.

She smiled and waved at Suisui, saying, “Come here, let your auntie bully... I mean, love you a little!”

Concubine Ren was so quick with her words that she inadvertently spoke the truth.

Upon hearing this, Suisui shrank back into her mother’s skirts in fear.

Her aunt suddenly became a bit strange.

So scary!

Seeing Concubine Ren teasing the child, Qi Wangfei smiled helplessly and said, “Suisui is still young; she can’t handle being teased. Be careful.”

After hearing this, Concubine Ren carelessly responded, “Of course, don’t worry. I won’t bully the child; it was just a casual remark.”

Concubine Ren had originally wanted to ask about how Concubine Che had annoyed Qi Wangfei earlier in the day.

But considering that Qi Wangfei would be going to the palace today and needed to maintain a good mood and focus, she ultimately decided against it. Instead, she coaxed Suisui, holding her in her arms and satisfying herself by kissing Suisui's cheek.

So soft; it felt wonderful!

As Concubine Ren savored the sensation, she laughed and commented, “Mmm, so tender to kiss; I want to eat her up.”

Suisui, terrified, wrapped her arms around Concubine Ren’s neck and pouted, “Not tasty, not tasty! Aunt Ren, don’t eat me!”

Remembering the chicken soup that Concubine Che had just brought, Suisui continued, “I soaked in a medicinal bath last night, and it smelled terrible—worse than the strange chicken soup that the weird auntie brought today.”

Concubine Ren didn’t quite understand.

After all, how could a child not smell good?

The scent of medicine is pleasant too.

Concubine Ren thought it smelled nice; she liked it.

Even though she didn’t quite comprehend, she smiled and replied, “The chicken soup doesn’t smell good, but Suisui smells great! The scent of medicine is also very nice. Don’t you believe me? Smell it; I’ve changed to a medicinal scent today.”

Concubine Ren was about to get her period soon.

Every month, she suffered terribly from pain.

So, she had specially asked a doctor to prescribe her some nourishing medicine.

Whenever her period was approaching, she drank it for a few days.

While it didn’t relieve the pain completely, it at least made it more bearable.

Hearing Concubine Ren say this, Suisui obediently leaned in to sniff.

Sure enough…

It seemed to carry a faint hint of medicinal fragrance.

Not being sure, Suisui moved a bit closer to Concubine Ren’s neck, her little nose twitching.

The two were too close, and Concubine Ren couldn’t see Suisui’s expression.

But feeling the little girl’s fluffy head nuzzling against her neck, Concubine Ren couldn’t help but take a satisfied sniff of the girl’s hair, saying, “Oh, my sweet little girl, you smell so good!”

Watching the good interaction between Concubine Ren and Suisui, Qi Wangfei felt both comforted and heartbroken.

She still had to go to the palace, and she remembered what Suisui said about the chicken soup not smelling good, so she made a note to have Haitang tidy things up.

She planned to take the chicken soup to the palace and ask the court physicians to help check Suisui’s condition.

Qi Wangfei soon left for the palace, and Prince Qi followed shortly after.

Concubine Che, having failed to gain Prince Qi's favor for Che Lingzhi, felt somewhat displeased and couldn’t help but grumble a bit on the way back.

Che Lingzhi, feeling wronged, clutched at Concubine Che’s sleeve and quietly said, “I’m sorry, auntie! Don’t be mad; I’ll make sure to behave and work hard to stay here. You can count on me!”

The little girl envied the life at the prince residence, so she was definitely willing to put in the effort for that.

Thinking of this made Concubine Che feel somewhat better.

After returning, she drank the chicken soup and some tonic before preparing to catch up on sleep.

She hadn’t slept well the previous night and was planning to take a nap today.

Before sleeping, she asked Qiao Zhi to take care of Che Lingzhi, and then Concubine Che fell asleep with ease.

Che Lingzhi, ignored by the prince and scolded by her aunt, felt extremely displeased.

She thought: It’s all that skinny, ugly child’s fault! If it weren’t for that brat showing up at the prince residence and stealing her position, the prince would surely like her by now!

Che Lingzhi grew increasingly dissatisfied as she thought about it. With a flick of her eyes, she managed to persuade Qiao Zhi to take her out to play.

Che Lingzhi assured her that she would keep her distance and wouldn’t run off far, just playing nearby.

Naturally, Qiao Zhi believed that Che Lingzhi wouldn’t easily cause trouble.

So, she smiled and accompanied the child.

At first, Che Lingzhi only wanted to look at the flowers and plants, but then she became restless and went to check out the fish instead.

She wandered around the eastern courtyard, mainly hoping to come across the two concubines and sweet-talk them into giving her some nice things.

Both of these concubines had good family backgrounds and were generous with their gifts. If she complimented them a bit, they would be willing to give her something nice.

There was also a Concubine Gu, who came from a lowly merchant background but had plenty of money to spare and was easy to fool.

The last time Che Lingzhi encountered her, she said a few flattering words and received quite a few good items in return.

Although Che Lingzhi looked down on Concubine Gu’s humble origins, money was still good.

She liked those ornaments and other valuable items.

If she didn’t encounter anything nice from someone with a good background, Che Lingzhi thought, then gifting them to herself could also be considered saving those ornaments by giving them a dignified owner.

Concubine Gu should be thanking her!

After circling around several times, Che Lingzhi found that no one was coming out.

It was as if everyone had agreed to stay indoors, not even peeking out.

Not even a head!

This made Che Lingzhi feel anxious and angry; she wished she could knock on their doors right now and force them to come out!

Unfortunately, such actions would be too annoying, and she couldn’t just do that.

Just then, she was pondering whether to ask Qiao Zhi to come up with a way to remind the concubines that someone had come to visit, so they might show their faces a little.

Suddenly, she saw two young girls crying and shoving each other as they headed toward Concubine Ren's quarters.

Che Lingzhi recognized that they were the concubines' maidservants, who didn’t hold much higher status than regular maids.

Although Che Lingzhi's father had no concubines, he did have three maidservants.

She had heard that one of the maids by her mother’s side had recently caught her father's eye.

Her father said that the maid had a big bottom and could bear sons, so he was planning to take her in.

Though Che Lingzhi was young, adults often spoke freely around her, and she understood a lot.

Taking someone in meant making that maid a concubine of her own.

Che Lingzhi looked down on the maidservants, thinking they were just elevated servants; it was ridiculous to think she would look up to them.

However, the two girls were heading to Concubine Ren’s room.

With this thought, Che Lingzhi’s eyes lit up.

She thought maybe if those two caused a ruckus, Concubine Ren would come out, and the other concubines would join in the excitement.

At that point, she could sweet-talk these people and, surely, they would give her good things.

Having come to this conclusion, Che Lingzhi tidied herself up and followed closely behind the two maidservants as they walked toward Concubine Ren’s quarters.
