 Chapter 248: The Plan Interrupted

While the couple was discussing Suisui’s education, the little one, who was the subject of their conversation, had already fallen asleep in a spread-eagle position on the bed. The blanket had been kicked off, revealing her cute little belly.

Aunt Xiang, concerned, heard the rustling and quietly entered the room. Sure enough, the child had kicked off her blanket again. She gently checked, feeling that the night was warmer, and with no breeze, the air seemed heavy, suggesting rain was coming.

So, it was normal for Suisui to kick off her blanket.

Aunt Xiang, moving quietly in the dim light from the candle in the outer room, picked out a thinner blanket from the wardrobe and gently covered Suisui with it.

Nuan Dong, who was on night watch, had noticed Aunt Xiang's movements and felt a little embarrassed. She had been sleeping at the foot of the bed, unaware of the situation.

Although Aunt Xiang didn’t scold her, she still quietly spoke to her, reminding her to be more attentive.

Nuan Dong and Nuan Xia were still young and lacked experience, so Aunt Xiang felt she had to take on more responsibility. After all, she was in charge of attending to the young princess. Though it was not ideal to speak too much, she needed to be cautious so as not to arouse suspicion or cause any disloyalty.

If the two maids didn’t perform well, Aunt Xiang would report it to the princess. The young princess was at an age that required extra care, and if the maids didn’t meet the standard, they would need to be replaced.

In the later hours of the night, Suisui didn’t kick off her blanket again, but Aunt Xiang still came to check on her.

Nuan Dong had woken up a few times throughout the night, and Aunt Xiang, being a light sleeper, had heard her stir.

When Aunt Xiang came to check on Suisui again, Nuan Dong was also awake. The two of them nodded at each other quietly, not wanting to disturb the sleeping child.

Suisui, however, remained unaware of their presence, soundly asleep until morning.

When she woke up, the sky was still dark, and she felt groggy, which confused her. "Aunt Xiang, isn’t it day yet?"

She had woken up from the discomfort of needing to pee, but the sky seemed still dark.

Aunt Xiang had already arrived as soon as she stirred.

Hearing the little one’s question, Aunt Xiang smiled and said, "It’s raining, so the sun hasn’t come out yet. It seems dark, but it’s already morning."

As she spoke, Aunt Xiang picked Suisui up and headed toward the washing room. Nuan Dong hurriedly opened an umbrella.

With the rain, the planned trip to Lanruo Temple to offer thanks had to be postponed. It wouldn’t be good to go out in the rain.

Looking at the light drizzle outside, Prince Qi felt regretful.

They had spent the whole afternoon yesterday making kites!

Although they didn’t turn out well, they were made by his precious daughter, and he didn’t want to leave them indoors. It would be a shame not to let them fly in the sky.

He sighed, "Rain is such a nuisance!"

Qi Wangfei, understanding his feelings, smiled helplessly, "It’s alright. We can go when the weather clears up. It might be a bit rushed, though, with the end of the month coming up. We’ll need to prepare for the birthday celebration for Cheng’er at the start of next month."

The gifts had already been arranged by the steward, and they only needed to review them, so it didn’t require too much effort.

Prince Qi, calculating the days, shook his head. "Forget it. The road will be muddy and it could be uncomfortable. We’ll go next month. I should have asked my royal brother yesterday when I went to court, for the Bureau of Astronomy to pick a good day for us. Oh well, if the rain stops tomorrow, I’ll go to the palace and ask him personally."

Though disappointed that he couldn’t go out, Prince Qi was still happy to spend time with Suisui.

After she finished washing up and changing clothes, Suisui was happily scooped up by her father.

For breakfast, Prince Qi fed her bite by bite, his face filled with joy.

Feng Xuanrui, watching from the side, felt a little disgruntled and muttered, "Why can't I feed my little sister? Father is such a bad guy!"

Prince Qi pretended not to hear. Feng Xuanbin, standing behind him, quietly echoed, "A bad guy, a bad guy!"

If Feng Xuanbin were alone, he wouldn’t dare say such things.

But since Sixth Brother was leading the charge, he figured his father wouldn’t scold him.

With these thoughts, Feng Xuanbin glanced at his father, only to meet a sharp glare.

Feng Xuanbin: …!

"Sixth Brother, help me!"

Feng Xuanbin nearly freaked out and shrank behind Feng Xuanrui.

Feng Xuanrui, seeing his younger brother’s cowardice, rolled his eyes and said, "If you’re scared, just admit it. Don’t make up excuses."

The two brothers began discussing how to "steal" their little sister from their father.

Their other brothers overheard and couldn’t help but snicker.

Prince Qi watched the children play with a smile on his face, content and relaxed. He didn’t interfere, and the children’s plans grew bolder with each passing moment.

He couldn’t care less about the mischief of the little boys; with his precious daughter in his arms, what did he need to worry about?

The rain outside made it unpleasant to go out and play, so Prince Qi stayed indoors and played with Suisui, making bamboo leaf dragonflies together.

Neither Shen Huatang nor Liu Hemeng had come today. The roads were difficult to traverse in this weather, and the cold and dampness made it easy to catch a chill. So, both Physician Liu and Master Shen had excused the two children from their lessons.

Qi Wangfei wasn’t particularly concerned, and she just shook her head before sending someone to inquire about the situation with Concubine Gu. Once she knew everything was fine there, she was relieved.

Aunt Qiu had already picked out the maids yesterday, and by early this morning, two of the maids from the side manor had arrived.

After hearing this, Qi Wangfei met with the two maids, inquiring carefully about their capabilities. After that, she took them over to Concubine Gu’s place to let her choose who she preferred.

Concubine Gu wasn’t sure who to pick either, so in the end, she closed her eyes and randomly pointed to a maid named Aunt Yuan.

As for the other maid, Qi Wangfei didn’t let her stay idle. "You’ll go back to the side manor first. Later, I’ll have Aunt Qiu choose more people. When the time comes, you’ll help take care of things, and once everything’s in order, bring them back to serve the little princess."

The maid who didn’t get chosen wasn’t disappointed. Although being seen by the master family meant more chances for exposure, the work at the side manor was more relaxed.

Upon hearing that Qi Wangfei had entrusted her with more responsibility, Aunt Liang immediately nodded earnestly.

At the palace, everyone knew that the newly appointed little princess was especially favored. Prince Qi would’ve held her in his palm every moment if he could, afraid she would run off with her little legs!

So, ensuring that the little princess’s servants were properly trained was something Aunt Liang took to heart.

After settling all the matters, Qi Wangfei handled a few minor things. Then, she heard from Aunt Qiu that the steward from the estate had come by and reported that the seeds Suisui had planted earlier had sprouted and grown quite tall. They had been transplanted to the fields and were thriving well.

Qi Wangfei smiled in satisfaction after hearing the news. "Since they’ve been so diligent, we’ll double their monthly allowance. Let them serve carefully and ensure that the fertilizer and water are sufficient. We can’t let anything happen to Suisui’s plants."
