Chapter 461: Medicinal Wine
Chu Heng heard her voice and quickly turned to look at her. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, it's nothing." Ye Muyu's cheeks were slightly red. Fortunately, it was night so he couldn't see clearly. She subconsciously lowered her voice. "You should go to sleep. I'll sleep too and wake up early tomorrow."
Chu Heng responded with a low "Mm." but his eyes remained open, unable to sleep.
Slowly, after an unknown amount of time passed, Chu Heng heard the even breathing beside him. He turned his head to look at Ye Muyu and by the moonlight, saw that she had fallen asleep.
A faint smile appeared in his eyes. He felt that even just lying beside her was a comforting thing.
Chu Heng soon fell asleep too.
Early the next morning.
Chu Heng woke up very early, just as the sky was beginning to brighten. He fetched water from the well, washed up, and then left the courtyard.
Ye Muyu woke up at her usual time, just before dawn.
In the summer, the sky brightened early. If it were winter, it wouldn't be bright at this hour.
Not seeing Chu Heng, Ye Muyu wasn't surprised. She dressed, washed up, and then remembered to apply some ointment on her face and lips.
The wound on the back of her hand had turned into a faint purplish color after sleeping overnight. It still felt slightly painful when touched but there was no longer any swelling.
According to her past experience, if it didn't hurt anymore, there shouldn't be any major problem.
Ye Muyu went straight to the kitchen.
Hu Shi was preparing breakfast in the kitchen.
"Madam, you're awake? Breakfast is already being prepared. I plan to make cold bitter gourd slices, steamed egg custard, beans with preserved meat buns, and stir-fried vegetables." Hu Shi asked while wrapping dumplings, "There's a bit of meat left at home from yesterday's purchase. I was wondering whether to make it into smoked meat to preserve it for longer or to eat it today?" Hu Shi continued, "Since Xingshui Village is close to the county, there are often merchants passing by who have shared methods of preserving smoked meat and preserved meat."
"Speaking of which, making smoked meat and preserved meat requires a bit more salt, but it's convenient when cooking because you don't need to add salt."
Upon hearing her question, Ye Muyu rubbed her forehead and remembered that the village chief had mentioned a forty-nine-day ban on slaughtering, which meant there would be no freshly slaughtered meat for the next month and a half.
In other words, there would be no fresh meat at home for the next month and a half.
Chu Heng had said that the county exam would not be affected and he would continue to participate. She had already planned to pack some preserved meat for him, which wouldn't spoil on the way and it would be convenient for cooking since salt wouldn't be needed. Soup could also be made easily, making things much more convenient.
Of course, she could also prepare some meat sauce to eat in the meantime.
She never considered not having meat.
Now, Chu Heng's departure was affected.
"Let's not make it now. Let's preserve it for smoking. My husband will need it when he's away." Ye Muyu immediately made a decision.
Then she called for Zhang Shu, gave him some silver and asked him to go to the village to inquire if there was any freshly slaughtered meat available.
Zhang Shu took the silver and left.
"Madam, you don't need to work. I can handle it. You still have an injury." Hu Shi turned around and saw Ye Muyu preparing to cut bitter gourd. She hurriedly spoke up.
"It's okay, my hand doesn't hurt anymore. But Hu Shi, if your hands still hurt, you should apply some medicine immediately. If we run out of medicine, we'll make our own." Ye Muyu thought of the medicinal wine from her previous life, specifically for treating bruises and injuries.
