Chapter 85: The Lesson - Rebirth of the Noble Daughter
Chapter 85: The Lesson
After Feng Jinlin returned from the academy, he learned about the incident at Fahua Temple. Seeing the injuries on Chilin, his anger surged to its peak. His usual playful demeanor turned icy and cold, making him quite intimidating.
The footprint on Chilin's body showed that Miss Liang had kicked it with force. If that kick had landed on his sister, she would have been bedridden for days. The mere thought of it enraged him even more.
He left Ning'an Courtyard without a word and disappeared. That evening, news spread that Lord Liang's carriage had gone wild, throwing him out and injuring his leg. He then took leave to recover at home. Many believed this was retribution for the Liang family's misdeeds.
Only Feng Jinyao knew that her second brother had a hand in this. She grew increasingly worried.
Recently, Chilin had been well-cared for and had recovered from its injuries. Its body had grown plump, no longer looking much like a fox. It lay quietly in Feng Jinyao's arms as Feng Jinlin examined it.
"It's recovering well, but it's a bit chubby. Ah Yao, you should feed it less. Be careful it doesn't become too fat to move."
Chilin snorted disdainfully and shot a sideways glance at Feng Jinlin, as if saying, 'Shut up!' Feng Jinlin burst into laughter.
Inside, the brazier chased away the cold. Holding the hand warmer that Lamei had brought, Feng Jinyao felt much warmer.
"How is your good friend these days, brother?"
"He's doing well. He stays in his room reading all day. No matter how much I persuade him, he refuses to come out, saying he doesn't want to offend the women in the household."
Feng Jinyao nodded. This person knew etiquette and didn't try to climb the social ladder, which was enough to make people respect him.
Feng Jinlin was curious why his sister brought this up and asked, "Ah Yao, you seem particularly concerned about him. Do you have other intentions?"
His mischievous look made Feng Jinyao give him a playful knock on the head.
"Nonsense. I just see that Young Master Yin is no ordinary person. Even Fourth Uncle said he has a good chance of placing high in the exams. Since he's in the same class as you, it would be great if you two could support each other in the future."
Feng Jinlin wore an expression of understanding but disbelief, annoying Feng Jinyao into ignoring him.
"With your temperament, I'll definitely tell Mother to find you a strict wife to teach you some manners."
Feng Jinlin laughed, "You can search all over the capital, but I doubt you'll find someone who can tame me. If you don't mind being an aunt late, I don't mind waiting a few more years."
"Stop joking! I'll complain to Sister-in-law about you!"
As the siblings joked, they heard someone crying outside. Xiuqiu stopped the person at the door. It was Moon Laurel, one of the head maidservants of the Madam Wen, crying with red eyes.
"What's wrong with you?"
"Sister Xiuqiu, please ask Third Miss to come quickly. Second Young Master fell into the backyard pond and was just pulled out. He's crying and won't stop. Concubine Lin insists that our Eldest Young Master pushed him. It's causing chaos in the First Lady's courtyard."
"Is it Aunt Lin again?"
"Wasn't Eldest Master keeping her confined to her small courtyard? How did this happen again?"
"It's a long story. Sister, please let me in to speak with Third Miss."
Moon Laurel was anxious, stamping her feet in the corridor. Yunxu lifted the curtain, and Feng Jinlin and Feng Jinyao both walked out.
"Is there trouble again?"
"Yes, Concubine Lin is holding Second Young Master tightly and won't let the family doctor see him. Madam Wen is afraid of hurting the child, and Eldest Master has been so busy he's been staying at the Dali Temple. So there's no other way but to seek Third Miss's help."
Feng Jinlin's eyes turned cold, filled with a hint of anger, as he looked at Moon Laurel.
"Just knock her out and take the child away. How can she bear the responsibility if something goes wrong with Yunli? Cold water in winter is dangerous. What if he gets seriously ill?"
His tone was severe, his gaze stern, scaring Moon Laurel so much that she couldn't speak clearly.
Feng Jinyao tugged at his sleeve, "Let's go see. It's almost the New Year; we can't afford any trouble."
Feng Jinlin nodded. This concubine in the First Lady's household was indeed troublesome. He wondered why his elder brother had taken a fancy to her in the first place, allowing her such impudence!
When they arrived at the First Lady's courtyard, they saw Madam Wen standing in the corridor with the maidservant Zhu Jin on her left and Feng Yunhe on her right. The family doctor stood nearby, anxiously looking at Yunli in Concubine Lin's arms.
"Madam, if we don't treat him soon, I'm afraid Second Young Master won't make it."
Yunli was soaked, exposed to the cold air, and Concubine Lin showed no intention of changing his clothes. Was she using her son to pave her way?
"What are you all standing there for? Take Second Young Master away!"
Madam Wen ordered. The maids and servants approached, but Concubine Lin drew a dagger, wildly waving it to keep everyone away. Her eyes filled with hatred as she spat at Madam Wen, "You're like a weasel wishing a chicken a happy New Year, with no good intentions. If your son hadn't tricked mine to the pond, he wouldn't have fallen in! And now you want the family doctor to treat him? Last time, he didn't cure my son's leg properly. This time, who knows what he might do? You just want my son dead so you and your son can succeed! I want to see Eldest Master! I want to see him!"
Concubine Lin's resentment towards Madam Wen and Feng Yunhe was deep-rooted. No amount of words would change her mind; she stubbornly refused to let the family doctor treat her son. Any further delay could turn a cold into pneumonia. How could a small child withstand such an illness?
Feng Jinlin's eyes grew colder, filled with a hint of anger as he looked at Concubine Lin.
He whispered to Feng Jinyao, "Ah Yao, distract her. I'll take the child."
"Okay."
Feng Jinlin circled to the back of the courtyard, hiding in an inconspicuous spot, waiting for an opportunity.
Feng Jinyao took a deep breath and walked to Madam Wen's side, turning to Concubine Lin with a fiery gaze.
"Here you are again, causing trouble."
"Sister-in-law, don't say that. We're family," she turned to Concubine Lin, speaking calmly, "I'm Yunli's aunt; I won't harm him. Please hand over the child. If we delay any longer, it'll be serious. Don't you see he's starting to shiver?"
Hearing this, Concubine Lin quickly checked on her son. In that moment of distraction, Feng Jinlin snatched the dagger from her hand and grabbed the child from her arms.
