PWDLAW Chapter 41: Missing Five Taels

 Chapter 41: Missing Five Taels

Then a new question arose, why did Ye Muyu's personality undergo such a drastic change? How did she transform from a coarse and mean village woman into a reasonable and intelligent housewife? Deep in thought, Chu Heng found a stool and sat down. Ye Muyu noticed the flickering lamp and hurriedly covered it with her hand. After the flame stabilized, she looked up at Chu Heng with a skeptical expression. "Are you going to rest?" Chu Heng nodded. "Yes." After some consideration, Ye Muyu stood up and put away the sewing basket, placing it on the table by the window. "Have you washed your feet?" Ye Muyu turned around and asked. Chu Heng shook his head. "No, I'll wash them when you do." Thinking about it, Ye Muyu stood up and went into the kitchen. In the kitchen, the water in the pot had cooled down a bit, so she added more fire to heat it. Chu Heng followed, carrying the foot-washing basin from the east wing. Chu Ziluo and Chu Jin shared one basin. Ye Muyu poured water into the basin first, supervising the two children as they washed their feet. When she returned, she found that Chu Heng had just poured hot water, as if he were waiting for her to come back and wash her feet. "Go ahead." Chu Heng said glancing at her. Unsure about what this man was thinking, Ye Muyu decided not to dwell on it. She found a stool and sat down. She took off her cloth shoes revealing footwraps made of white satin that had turned a deep brown, indicating long-time use. Socks were similar to personal undergarments, requiring frequent washing and changing. The use of footwraps showed status, and not everyone had the conditions to wear them. The materials used for footwraps varied. Using silk satin, especially, was a mark of high status. Ye Muyu calmly took off the socks and threw them aside, deciding not to use them anymore. She put her feet in the water, slowly soaking them. Chu Heng's gaze remained on her, his eyes not revealing any emotions. After washing his feet, he saw Ye Muyu still soaking hers. He wiped his feet, sat on the bed, and picked up a book. Unaffected by him, Ye Muyu continued soaking her feet. Despite Chu Heng's cold and strict demeanor she found it relatively easy to get along with him since they were both reserved individuals. Moreover, spending the day together made her satisfied with Chu Heng, who turned out to be very clean. After patiently soaking her feet, Ye Muyu stood up to pour the foot-washing water. She cleaned the basin, checked on the two children to make sure they were sleeping soundly and then inspected the courtyard gate before returning to the east wing. In the room, Chu Heng sat cross-legged on the bed staring directly at her. Ye Muyu's eyes widened slightly and she raised her eyebrows. "Is there something?" Chu Heng pushed a money pouch toward her. "This is the living expenses for the next three months." Ye Muyu recalled that Chu Heng indeed provided three months' worth of living expenses at a time. She moved closer, casually reached for the pouch and emptied the silver coins onto the table. Counting them, she found around fifteen taels. It was five taels less than what she had received before. Did Chu Heng face financial issues? Ye Muru thought about clarifying the situation but felt that it was his private matter. She hesitated for a moment. Seeing that she didn't get upset or question why there was less money, Chu Heng felt strange. "Yes, I understand." Ye Muyu decided to earn money on her own. Considering that Chu Heng would continue preparing for the imperial examination, she expected the expenses to increase.
