PWDLAW Chapter 21: Restoring Reputation

Chapter 21: Restoring Reputation

Educating and enlightening.

There were only two elderly scholars in the county's school who could teach the Four Books. Another one was a neighboring village's Huang Xiucai, who like Chu Heng, planned to continue taking the imperial examination. However, he had a motherly wife with a less attractive appearance.

After considering all options only Chu Heng and those young scholars seemed suitable.

Before this, every family in the village wanted to establish good relations with the Tang family. They were waiting for the right opportunity to marry Tang Rou into a scholarly family.

Until four days ago, Tang Rou suddenly proposed to marry Chu Heng and explained the benefits to Tang Wangshi and her biological father, Tang Xueren.

At that time Tang Rou said "Dad, Mom, I think marrying Chu Heng has more prospects. Firstly, Chu Heng has already become a Xiucai. Those scholars might spend their entire lives working in the fields. Dad can you wait for me to give birth to a son and hope that the son will go to high school? By then, you'll be almost sixty... Besides, it's uncertain whether the first child will be a son. Even if it is there's no guarantee he'll be able to study."

Hearing this Tang Xueren felt uncomfortable. Both of his sons were not good at studying and he would never admit that it was due to his lack of intelligence. So, when he heard this he instantly became dissatisfied with those scholars he had previously favored.

Although there were some under twenty years old scholars like Chu Heng who ranked first in the annual examinations, were considered the most likely to pass the imperial examination. Even if Chu Heng didn't pass the imperial examination, Tang Xueren believed that it was only a matter of time as long as he continued participating.

So, he agreed to Tang Rou's desire to marry Chu Heng.

Of course, she had to be the legal wife.

This matter was challenging to plan. As an elder, Tang Xueren certainly couldn't do it himself. Therefore, he let his wife, Tang Wangshi, and Tang Rou handle it. Even if something went wrong he wouldn't lose face.

Tang Xueren thought well but he didn't know the principle that when one loses all lose. If Tang Wangshi and Tang Rou's reputations were damaged, could he still be praised?

It could only be said that self-interest blinded his eyes.

Returning to Chu Liushi's side, she was extremely surprised "Tell me, how did my third daughter-in-law handle this?"

"It's just that she said, for the sake of being fellow villagers and not wanting to cause trouble for Scholar Husband, she agreed to embroider the thread."

"I was thinking, who cares about Tang Wangshi usually? She's obviously a troublesome person. So, I thought that your Scholar Wife and Tang Rou have a good relationship. That's why she was willing to help her."

Chu Liushi couldn't smile anymore. She thought that Ye Muyu had made another mistake this time. Everyone in the village knew Tang Wangshi's personality and Ye Muyu shouldn't have involved herself with Tang Rou. She should have refused directly. Anyway, even if she refused the villagers would only say that she was arrogant.

But what did it matter? Her son was the only scholar in the village in the past twenty years. With an official position who cared if he was a bit arrogant in the village?

However, she had to help her daughter-in-law save face. She covered her mouth and said with a smile, "You guys don't understand. It was Ye Muyu who heard my son, Chu Heng say that. The emperor appreciates the common people. Now that he's a scholar, all the honors are bestowed by the emperor. Naturally, we must follow the emperor's example and treat the common people kindly."
