Chapter 43: The reborn of paranoid boss cannon fodder wife

 Chapter 43: Midnight Comfort

Xiao Wei didn't know if Bai Lu's words were true or false because she left after saying them.

Not even taking the twenty yuan on the table with her.

He looked down at his small clothes, nodding seriously, "It seems a bit old..."

In another room.

A man stood by the window with hands behind his back, broad and strong shoulders, towering figure. The moonlight cast his shadow on the floor, resembling a sturdy pine on a cliff, unmoving despite the winds.

His deep eyes, shrouded in darkness, gazed into the night, contemplating something.

Bai Lu walked over quietly, picked up the malt candy water on the table, and handed it to him, interrupting his thoughts, "What are you thinking about? The candy water is getting cold; drink it before it cools completely, and go to sleep early."

Don't think about Li Chengbin's debt.

Xiao Cheng looked at the cup in his hand, accepted it expressionlessly, and drank it as usual.

Used to the scalding temperature, a couple of sips didn't bother his throat anymore.

Bai Lu knew he would usually go out to boil water and rinse his mouth after drinking. She had already prepared a cup and handed it to him.

A smiling face replaced the cup in his hands.

Xiao Cheng took a sip, and his tongue tingled. It wasn't too hot, but he couldn't control a couple of coughs.

Bai Lu quickly patted his back, advising with concern, "Drinking too much sweet water can lead to excess body heat, affecting the digestive system and causing obesity. Even if you like it, you shouldn't drink it again. If you want some, wait for some time and drink it after a few days. Moreover, it's not good to have sweet water at night."

She finally remembered to control him a bit.

Xiao Cheng, looking at the serious expression on the girl's face, nodded solemnly, indicating his full approval of her advice.

Bai Lu happily pulled him to the table, opened a drawer with one hand, and took out the money inside.

"Here, this is the money from selling sugar-roasted chestnuts. It's 780 yuan, and I've already given Aunt Wu her share."

Bai Lu's face was full of joy, a hint of pride in her innocent eyes. With the money in her white jade-like hand, she reached a new height of happiness, shattering the moonlight on the floor.

Xiao Cheng, with a silent depth in his eyes, let a trace of moonlight fall, starting to erode the long-existing dark haze.

"Keep it for yourself," he said.

Bai Lu shook her head, "I don't need it. I still have the money you gave me before." ...She wanted to repay the debt!

Xiao Cheng looked at her intently, his gaze deep, "Isn't it for buying things for the child?"

Bai Lu's heart skipped a beat, almost forgetting. She could sell chestnuts, all thanks to her pregnancy.

They agreed to buy diapers for the child!

Bai Lu awkwardly withdrew her hand and the money, saying seriously, "The child still has more than three months to be born. We don't need to rush to buy things. Wait for a month or two, maybe there will be better things in the mother and baby market than what's currently being sold."

Xiao Cheng glanced at her belly but didn't say anything. He just nodded, turned, and went to the bed.

Bai Lu put the money back in the drawer, took a deep breath, and decided to save more to pay him back later.

Both of them lay back on the bed.

As usual, each covered themselves with a quilt.

Xiao Cheng raised his hand to turn off the light. In the room illuminated by the slanting moonlight, it wasn't pitch black but rather quiet. They could hear each other's steady breathing.

Bai Lu lay on her side, facing the wall. Despite having things on her mind, she soon fell asleep while counting sheep.

A peaceful breath of sleep lingered in the air.

In the darkness, the man opened his eyes. His sharp and cold eyes, like a liberated beast, stared into the distance. When he got out of bed, he moved carefully, seemingly afraid to disturb something.

Dressing methodically, he buttoned the last button of his black coat, then took long strides towards the door.

"Ah Cheng..."

With a snap, the room's light suddenly turned on as the girl's drowsy voice sounded, abruptly awakening.

Xiao Cheng paused and turned.

The girl with disheveled hair lay on the side where he had just left. Her hand slowly retracted from the light switch, her eyes half-opened, gazing in his direction. Although her eyelids lazily fought against each other, she seemed not fully awake.

"Why aren't you sleeping? Where are you going..."

She closed her eyes every time she uttered a word, opening them again after.

Seemingly half-awake yet wanting to prove she was fully aware.

Xiao Cheng returned to the bedside, helped her lie down, covered her with the quilt, and gently patted it twice.

"Sleep...," his low and soothing voice coaxed.

Bai Lu's eyelids flickered, her eyes rolled up and down, and finally, seemingly unable to resist the drowsiness, slowly closed.

But her hand still gripped Xiao Cheng's clothes tightly, her eyes completely closed, five fingers holding on firmly.

As soon as Xiao Cheng separated his little finger, she suddenly opened her eyes, "Why... aren't you sleeping..."

Xiao Cheng: "..."

"I have something to do."

He repeated.

"Where are you going?" Bai Lu closed her eyes again, grabbing his clothes, "What are you doing..."

Xiao Cheng remained silent.

She didn't open her eyes again.

After a while, still no movement, her breathing gradually became lighter and more even, seemingly asleep.

Xiao Cheng once again separated the fingers clinging to his clothes. The action was extremely light, even his breath and heartbeat were as silent as if they didn't exist.

Separate the little finger.

Separate the ring finger.

The fair and slender middle finger and index finger separated.

Just as he touched the thumb, Bai Lu suddenly opened her eyes again, "Why... aren't you sleeping..."

Xiao Cheng: "..."

"I have something to go out for."

He repeated.

"Where?" She closed her eyes again, her lazy voice murmuring, "What are you doing..."

The same questions and answers.

Her hand grabbed his clothes the same way.

Xiao Cheng sighed, lightly patting the quilt by her side, his voice gently coaxing, "Sleep..."

"Don't go anywhere."

As if finally hearing a satisfactory answer, Bai Lu slowly closed her eyes, and her hand released his clothes.

Xiao Cheng breathed a sigh of relief, about to get up and leave, when she suddenly furrowed her eyebrows, tossing and turning.

During this, there were also muffled groans and sobbing sounds, like an injured little animal, curling up and trembling.

Xiao Cheng quickly lifted the quilt and indeed saw Bai Lu curled up, holding her stomach in pain.

He hugged her into his arms, reached out to touch her forehead, and asked softly, "What's wrong?

Where does it hurt?"

Bai Lu, with half-dreamy and half-awake eyes, faced buried in his neck, weakly spoke, "Don't know..."

"Stomach..."

Xiao Cheng's face changed slightly, touched her stomach, and asked softly, "What's wrong with your stomach?"

Bai Lu's body trembled a bit, teeth biting into his neck, her blurry voice like a thread of silk, "Stomach... seems a bit uncomfortable..."
